Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

Ok, update on electricity costs as promised: - It was a pretty cold winter this year in Michigan, which factors into this a little bit, but regardless heating the shop wasn’t cheap - Important notes- we kept the ambient air thermostat at 55 degrees all winter (warmer than many would keep a...

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

Thanks for the details and advice! I’ll probably “step down” temps as well as winter gets colder, but first want to get a baseline for monthly costs for myself and to report back to the group. I need to get one of those infrared temp tools.

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

OK, round one of updates: - After seeking tons of advice and hearing lots of highly varied feedback, I decided to stick with what I already had (the pre-fab kit - see photo). I’ll report back on costs to run the system here in West Michigan after I have some details- but it’s just about the...

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

Great points. Having done it once now, and only once, there are quite a few things I’d go back and do differently (or in addition to)… but after all that work I’m hoping there is no next time to worry about!

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

For what’s it worth, since I know there must be people like me searching for similar information, I’m also attaching a few pictures of what I’m talking about. - Pex is run under the 40x40x16 shop, plus the 14x14 lounge and bathroom - Shop is within bigger 80 x 140 barn, other side is horse...

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

I should have this setup installed and wired professionally in the next two weeks. Since my barn is on its own meter (which seems to be the issue with most people here being able to report on their heating costs per month), I will post my monthly electric bills for the first several months...

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

I have a heat pump on a mini split in my office (converted 3-season porch to 4-season, full spray-in insulation professionally installed, mini split professionally installed)… not impressed with performance compared to the in-slab radiant heat in several barns around here. It’s 2 years old, and...

Who wants to take the over/under on this one? I’ll stuff the Benjamin’s in a boot and send the winner their take. 😂

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

Thanks. Our electric rate is .154/Kwh in our rural area (least expensive available)… which multiplied by 27 is $4.16, compared to LP which is at about $2.50/gallon right now. Pretty big difference when compared this way… but I’m still most interested in monthly cost estimates since what I...

Hydronic Heat - 40x40x16 shop - Electric boiler, 2" XPS under/around slab, R19 walls, R35 ceiling... monthly electric bill estimates?

I'm pretty sure I've trudged through every possible thread in the forum looking for any posts related to actual monthly/seasonal electric costs to heat a 40x40x16 (or anything even remotely similar) shop with almost zero success, and I'm hoping we can get a fresh thread going with real numbers...
