Anyone here know why 3/8"-16 plug taps have a thicker shank?

As the title suggests, I'm curious about why nearly all 3/8"-16 plug taps are designed with a shank diameter roughly equal to the major thread diameter while the other common SAE taps have a shank diameter closer to the minor thread diameter. I'm familiar with the concepts of through hole and...

Time to break out the evaporust and paint stripper - Ridgid 24" pipe wrench restoration

@MRL83 Have you used their Methylene Chlroine-free formula with good results? I remember using aircraft stripper 8 or 9 years ago to do a bicycle frame (original paint) and some mag motorcycle wheels that the previous owner gave a lousy paint job, and that worked great. I tried using the...

Time to break out the evaporust and paint stripper - Ridgid 24" pipe wrench restoration

Can I ask what you used to strip the paint from the wrench? I picked up a 10" Craftsman and a 14" Ridgid at an estate sale recently with the intention of doing the same thing. The paint came off the Craftsman alright with the Methylene Chloride free paint stripper and a wire wheel (mostly wire...

Trying to find 1/4-in hex drive 1-in METRIC hex bits locally in the USA

Does anyone have a reliable brick and mortar source for 1/4-in hex drive 1-in length metric hex bits? Impact Rated sets would be preferred, but I'm willing to buy individuals if it comes to it. It seems the only way I can find them around here (Charleston, SC) is to buy the biggest bit sets...

    Vintage S-K Tools

That was my next guess (well, at least the shop part). I figured it was unlikely to be from S-K considering it always appears to be done post-chroming.

    Vintage S-K Tools

Does anyone happen to know what these markings represent? I've noticed them on a number of box-end wenches, and this is the first time I've seen it on a ratchet. I'm pretty sure it's always been 4 dots in a row. Initially I thought maybe they were owner marks and the wrenches somehow made it to...

With really nasty looking acetate handles, I've had great luck using that headlight defogger stuff they sell in the automotive department. Unfortunately the yellowing in the Craftsman Philips driver's is too deep set to get out, but it's worked wonders on pretty much anything other than crystal...

That's what I've noticed- you definitely got a great deal- especially compared to most of the listings!

If this was on eBay, I was definitely watching it 😂

    Vintage S-K Tools

At this point, it seems I'm in the opposite boat! The knurled S-K and Metrics are definitely fewer and farther between, but all the sockets outside of the boxes (and a few inside them) were all acquired from socket bins at pawn shops and the flea market. Meanwhile, I had to ebay partial box sets...

    Vintage S-K Tools

My little S-K family has grown significantly over the past few months. Starting with the old [good] stuff: The 1/2" set, no. 4015, has a temporary non-knurled 1-1/4" (the original set only went up to 1-1/8") and is missing the cross bar (but I've thrown in a period correct T-handle for the...

    Vintage S-K Tools

That's awesome. I've been contemplating for weeks whether or not I should search for a 3/4" drive ratchet to complete the set, but considering I don't have any industrial-sized equipment to work on, it'd probably find more use taking out unwanted intruders than repairing machinery...

I was supposed to bleed my brakes and replace my pads this weekend, but wound up wandering the pawn shops and flea market because two of the parts I ordered never showed up. Ended up being a new to me tool day: long handle streamlined Bonney 11/16" box-end, circa 1956 (if I understand the date...

    Vintage S-K Tools

That looks like a spot-on color match to me! I saw a few threads elsewhere where people used a particular Rustoleum (I think it was in their hammered line?) that appears to have been discontinued. I'll definitely have to check out the Midwest Military stuff. Also, that VHT Wrinkle Plus...

    Vintage S-K Tools

Beautifully done! What paint/color did you use? I accidentally figured out how to add a crinkle on an old vise I restored (cured the paint in a toaster oven, then hit it with clear enamel before it had completely cooled). I wonder if I were to do this on an S-K toolbox, and then hit it with...

    Vintage S-K Tools

That's a great set- even if it's not 100% matching. I'll have to post photos of my full S-K collection soon! It's not the biggest, but I'm surprised how quickly it's grown in just a few months.

Do these allow you to keep the original switch? All of my S-K ratchets are diamond logo like yours- except for one 3/8" in a plastic box Dresser set my grandfather just gave me. I definitely prefer the original; the Dresser ratchet itself feels as solid as the others, but the switch is awful...

    Vintage S-K Tools

It definitely gets super complicated, and I think to a certain extent, some are indestinguishable without records (I love the illustrations in the catalogs, but it would've been way easier for identification purposes if they had photos for the socket examples). The earliest boxes used a decal...

    Vintage S-K Tools

Hard agree. I have about 15 loose knurled sockets I've scavenged from the flea market and pawnshops outside of a partial 4097 set with all the drive tools and box. The only one I don't have between the set and loosies is a 7/32". I don't suppose you'd consider selling me one of those? 😁🤞
