What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Helped a buddy with a 2011 1.4 Audi A1 yesterday, battery run flat and confirmed not charging. Load tested alternator power/ground with a head light bulb and only saw about 0.2v drop = main wires good, probed signal wire with a scope (plug connected, Linbus) picture perfect trace = Linbus is up...

Plus 1 for the insulation. What you suggested sounds much like a warm roof over here, is what im considering for the new roof efforts. General plan is to junk the existing (including the plastic nonsense), go up, add some pitch possibly and insulation. Just looking for some temp relief for now 🥵

On the cheaper side, foam filled aluminium slats, being low on overhead height is one of the reasons I went for the roller shutter, very convenient but by design a thin section. Maybe a bigger hightop van parked across the door mad max style is the answer :ROFLMAO:

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

Did some messing with the garage roof today with regards to knocking down temps, started by throwing some OSB offcuts up there on top of side ended 4x2, just to shade a small section and note the effect. Shot from inside 30 mins later, around 4 o'clock with ambient temps about 28c, If you...

What did you do "IN" your garage today?

yep, before then I need to attend to the roof really, single skin with no insulation, osb and felt overlay, is all old an ideally id like to replace and raise it some, it gets very hot, something like 45c surface temp internally, acts like a giant radiator. The shed is a hodgepodge and full so a...

walked into shop, checked temp, 34c, walked back into house, grabbed a beer, fired up the projector and watched Utubes about Roman surveying 😅

Thinking about it, a transfer gauge would be a quick and easy to use tool to check machine twist on a ship. A simple rectangular frame that sits on 3 points and indicates the 4th, set zero from a reference (surface plate) and place on the machine, adjust the indicated foot to zero, return gauge...

For a two pedestal lathe, at a push I could imagine 2 levels, perp to the bed at either end of the machine, with a eyes on each looking to sync a min max/number in a millpond, for longer stuff add an alignment scope or taut wire. But guys on radios? Calling to the shop floor?? 😂

Ah im just a hobby joe in the machining department, have always had an interest in machining/mechanical engineering tho and love to learn. Metrology and machine reconditioning became the main interest so I started out tearing down a 1930s new to me DSG 13" lathe, was an educational trip that...

I can only imagine (y) Reading through Foundations of Mechanical Accuracy is an experience all by itself for those interested. Also Testing Machine Tools by Georg Schlesinger (the bible), useful for required specs of new tools and various testing methods. Fuzzy PDFs for both usually findable.

True, unless previous hands tossed a few shims in trying to fix one error by introducing another 😅 (sorry, couldn't resist) For those interested, a quick look a Kingway tool loading up with two adjustable vials doing its thing, can indicate from it also making things very convenient.

Its all relative and needs based eh. Turning to tenths over any distance for a living? Repair/setup machine tools for living? Have an interest in machine geometry/reconditioning? Precision levels are high on the list of needs. The must have tool to get the 70yo beater out in the shed with a 30...

For anyone wondering, theres normally not much need for lathes etc to be 'level' with earth. When 'checking level' with regards to a machine tool, folks are usually referring to looking for any meaningful twist in the main slideways, precision bubble levels are ideal for this. All is rubber lol
