Ok.. Let me first say that ive been around Genius tools for Awhile Now, I have a buddy who has a Part time Auto Repair shop and im fairly confident that he has the Majority of there Line-up. I go over there Every Now and again and shoot the Sh|t with him and mainly we talk about Tools and i always bust a Chops a bit and Ask him how his Genius tools are Working out, And if he feels smarter when he uses them. LOL.. His Response is always the same " There Great".. Ive always been a USA Guy and 99% of my Tools are Wright, SO, SK and Older US branded tools. I have a Above Average Selection of tools for a Non-Professional and Enjoy the Satisfaction of being able to Maintain my Vehicles. I was on Amazon the other Night and decided to do some Searching for Deals and ran across a Genius 1/4 Sae/Metric 6pt Shallow/Deep Socket set.. It was Priced Right <$40 bucks so i Picked it up. It Arrived today and I figured i would Offer up a Review. What was Included?

1/4" Ratchet 5 1/2" Long, 72 Tooth Round head with the Heart shaped wire under the Directional switch, which is common on Many ratchets including Williams, SK and Snap on. As you can see the handle closely follows the Snap On Traditional Chrome. The Action is Very.. very stiff, I dabbed some 3-1 oil in and it didnt help much.

2" and 6" Extensions
SAE 6pt Shallow 9/16-3/16 Satin Finish
SAE 6pt Deep 9/16-1/4 Chrome Finish
Metric 6pt Shallow 14MM - 3MM Satin Finish
Metric 6pt Deep 14MM -5.5MM Chrome Finish

What are my First Impressions? I Individually checked Every Piece out, I didnt Notice any Defects, Miss Stamps, etc.. The actual box is very Light and i suspect the thin Hinge will eventually break. The Chrome is Decent but lacks the Rich Luster that you get with Wright and Snap On, It seems very Thin to Me. I enjoy the Knurling that is present on every socket near the Drive End, Its nice and i believe it will come in handy when hand spinning Nuts and Bolts Down. Again.. Ive yet to put Socket to Fastener but Be Patient as i want to give this a Full Review, I'll be Honest and keep Updating the Thread as i Progress. My only regret was not purchasing the 3/8 set as i think it would have gotten More Use, thus a Faster more Accurate Review. I can promise you Next time you see these tools there will be Evidence of Use, Im not Quick to label something Equal to another brand then show pics of a Brand New Tool. I Call them as I see them and have always backed up my claims here in the Past with Pictures and Reasoning if these things turn out to be the Biggest Piece of **** Ive ever owned, There will be Pictures. If anyone has Current experience with Genius tools feel free to Jump In, Pictures are Great. I'm Trying to get my Buddy to Join Up here at GJ so he can share his Opinions and Pictures. Enjoy

I've got the 1/2" drive 6 point 25 socket set.
8-36 mm sockets. I agree the chrome is thin, but I don't see any flaws in any of the sockets.

I have been using the hell out of them and they are holding up.

Yeah.. If you watch there Production Video its Obvious there is Very Little Human Interaction with there tool Production, I expect this leads to a More Uniform Tool Finish. Again.. Im not blasting the Chrome, Im just Noting that it Doesnt have the luster/Thickness of the Big Boys. Thanks for following up with your Opinions..

Ive got a set of screwdrivers from genius. I didnt want a sears set...they just seem chinsy to me...I like the genius set because it came with I think 5 #2 phillips head drivers of different length. In the past year little to no wear has appeared. I also like how the entire shaft is a hex shape, I dont like that the handles seem just a little small.

I work in a large machine shop and one of our tooling suppliers has been flooding us with Genius fliers. Nobody has ordered anything yet. I try to buy only quality tools. So I most likely will not purchase any, but I did see a set of the Genius 0 offset double box at a tool store several months ago and almost bought them thinking they were a small Canadian upstart company. Then I found out they were from China. I am very interested to see a full review of these tools.

I have several of the ratchets but none of the other tools. I find the ratchet heads too thick like the Habor Freight roto heads. The ones I have came absolutly dry inside. I put a small amount of lubiplate in and made it smoother. Overall I don't like them but at least you can service them. They do have a nice feel and mine have the copy of the Snap-On plastic hard handles and the chrome is decent but not spectacular. I used one of the once and just didn't like the way it felt in use. I've never teted the strength of one because I didn't want to risk breaking it as return for me would had involved shipping both ways. They arn't keepers but I will pass them on to a few of my kids. I bought them out of sheer curiosity. For me they just didn't instill any confidence. The heads will interchange with the short flex roto heads from Harbor freight. (but not the long ones). I think they are very generic and not something that will find a home in my boxes. I will say they seem like a good deal but lack quality of a Duralast. Out of all the Chicom ratchets I like the Duralast best followed by Gearwrench. In all fairness I havent used and abused the Genius enough to give it a fair evaluation. The reason being after a few minutes I just didn't want to. It just felt like something you would buy on a display with 30 of the same for 4.99. It just didn't capture me.

I imagine I may be be missing the good in the ratchet and dismiss it with prejudice like others here have the Duralast. Sometimes it take more than simple mechanicals and good looks to make it something you would use. I look forward to hearing more of your reveiw as time goes on.

There actually made In Taiwan, Ill agree the Canadian Leaf is a bit deceiving.. LOL. Im not so Quick to pass them up as not being a Quality Tool, We have a Snap on Dealer Here at GJ who sells them off the Truck and has quite a few Pro Mechanics on his route who Use them Daily. Ive talked to Chadster in the Past and he was Honest about them and claimed that the Ratchets didnt seem to Hold up well to Daily abuse but Nothing but Praise for the Sockets etc.

I think they are very generic and not something that will find a home in my boxes. I will say they seem like a good deal but lack quality of a Duralast.

Based on Reviews here in the Past they are the Upper Class of Imports, I havent seen confirmation but i recall some Members saying they were built by Rotar (toptul). IF you've ever seen there Zero Degree Wrenches you would be Amazed at there Glimmer. If they didnt carry some clout thru the various Tool Forums (Do a Search) i wouldnt have tried them, they also seem to get Rave reviews from Members, Snap on Dealers etc..

I have yet to see a broken Genius socket. I have sold close to 40 of those sets over the last 3 years. The ratchets do not hold up to professional abuse. I have to rebuild them quite often. Its gotten to the point that I no longer stock any of the Genius sets that have that ratchet in them.

the 3/8" Genius ratchet I have doesn't seem to have much heft to it, it feels like a light weight.

I prefer the SK or Williams superratchet that I have.

I'll have to take a pic.

I think Genius, like Titan, Mountain, and maybe Sunex and others are branding companies that buy generic tools from various sources and put their name on them. They all seem good, not pretty, but functional.

I have a set of 1/4" metric swivel sockets and the 4 pc mini pick set. The sockets are solid and firm movement with a matte chrome finish. The picks look and feel just like the other imports. I've used them to pull quite a few tough keys and caps off with no problems. I'm on the lookout for a large set of the deep offset metric box end wrenches too.

I've had the same 1/4" drive set for about 2 or so years now. I do not use the ratchet...I just don't like it. I've been spoiled for some time by SO ratchets. Minus the ratchet this is an outstanding set and it has yet to disappoint me. I also own a set of 3/4" drive impact sockets 3/4"-2 3/8" and I have ZERO complaints. I have also abused their wrenches...beat on them with hammers, etc...and have no complaints. To all the naysayers out there, Genius makes a solid, rugged tool.

pretty much what I have been saying every time someone asks about them. Excellent quality for the price and cheap enough that warranty doesn't even matter.

I really like both my genius sockets and my toptul long beam combination wrenches.

Thanks for Sharing, I agree the Ratchet is **** when compared to Snap On... Its just not a fair Comparison though.

I won that 1/4 set in a contest awhile back and flipped it on Ebay. I didn't care for the ratchet. I also didn't like the fact that both the SAE and MM sockets had the same knurling on their bases. Some Genius tools are great but, their prices are steadily rising.

Genius has had one price increase in 3 years. I believe it was about 2%. I would not call that steadily rising. What you are probably seeing is an increased demand and brand awareness.

One of the tool sets that I carry in my ATV tool bag is a Genius SB276MS.

I like the looks of the 0 degree wrenches. Never seen one in person but the photos are impressive. Looks like they took a lesson from Snap-On on the size stamping.

picked up a roto-ratchet from princess auto here, similar store to harbor freight.

The ratchet was their house 'powerfist' brand and was being clearanced out at around 11 bucks

when i got home, i was looking over the tool and was very impressed with the overall quality of the tool. Looked into it and it seems that either genius produced the tool for harbor freight or genius and harbor freight use the same oem

anyways, heres a stock photo of the ratchet with plastic grip

I couldn't find those on their site
http://www.dskatools.com

That picture looks like the ones I've seen on ebay though

Well Hell... They was on there the Other day. Here is there Contact Info, Im sure they have them in stock. Oh.. and I did rip the pictures off the Ebay guy. Normally you can find the SAE set for $50 bucks (Amazon) and the Metric usually runs close to a $100 but ive seen them on sale lately for $75 (2 more wrenches versus the SAE)

What are the purpose of these super long zero degree wrenches? They're pretty but can't think of an instance I've needed something like this.

I use them almost 100% exclusively to break loose nuts. It's the extra length that really provides the leverage.

They're great for loosening the slider pin/bolt on brake pad replacements, at least from my usage.

plenty of uses, but my first need for one was a 14mm to break free the propshaft flange bolts on my landcruiser. offset box didn't fit, open end spread too easily (this thing needed serious persuasion the first time)

me too. i keep mine in my roll around and my normal combination wrenches in my big box. lets just say the normal combination wrenches don't come out that often after buying those.

i've been thinking about getting these genius ones for a while. the price is definitely right!

I sell TOPTUL and I feel it's better (as I really, really like the satin chrome finish) but Genius is good stuff by and large. Like TOPTUL I doubt that they make their own ratchets as it seems everybody in Taiwan buys their ratchets from William Tool.

One thing I will give them major props for it that they seem to have a commitment to the American market, something I can assure you that TOPTUL doesn't. They seem to be trying hard and I can tell you from personal experience that TOPTUL isn't. I've never understood that but that's the way it is.

To give you an example of what I mean take the super long zero offset box wrenches. Both TOPTUL and Genius make these. TOPTUL however, even with much prodding from me, doesn't make these in the 13, 15 or 18mm sizes which are used on every American vehicle made in the last 20 years. The TOPTUL version of this tool are amazingly beautiful and if I could offer a complete set (one that had the sizes mentioned and not just the Japanese sizes) I think I could sell quite a few of them. But NO TOPTUL will not do that. Genius does.

Have u considered becoming a Genius distributor instead? It'd be easier to deal with them I assume. Since a lot of the Snap On and Matco tool truck guys also have Genius tools in stock. They make good sockets and wrenches. That's all I own of Genius. I kinda want to try out their quick release 1/2 inch drive ratchet but its more of a want than need. King Tony has more distribution than Toptul but not as much as Genius. Good tools as well. Those Taiwan tool companies seem to have excellent quality control too
