Hi Everyone
Im Mark from the UK, i came across this great forum while looking for vices, i was given one a week ago, its a Record No4, i stripped it cleaned it and regreased and assempled it and it is smooth as silk, it was from our warhouse and the owner thinks its at least 20 years old. Now here in the UK we get screwed for everything and my vice needs new jaw plates and the cheapest i can find them at here is £26, which i think is overpriced so as its just for my garage i though i would, just use mild steel, now could any one tell what the size of the plates should be please and the screw types and threads and also the distance between the holes so i can borrow a piller drill and drill the steel. I have included a piccy of the vice stripped, and will add a nother of it installed later.
Thank you for any help you may give
Mark

My before and after. Spur of the moment purchase. Stripped, wire-wheeled, primered, and painted. Probably shouldn't have painted the slide, but oh well. I'm giving it to my Dad for Birthday/Xmas. Might pick something up nicer for myself this weekend.

The Parker vise in the attached photo isn't too far from here. Is it a very collectible model? What is it worth if nothing is broken or missing? It looks original except for the spindle retainer (looks like a nut).

I saw that Parker. Its in lsSalle Il. isn't it? It looked to be in good condition. The only thing missing is the original Parker collar. I thought of riding down for it but decided to pass. Those Parker combo's are classy! Cleaned up its worth can very widely.

I'd like to get an anvil. Found a huge one sitting in the front lawn of an antique shop in WV. Asked how much? Price was $75, but $200 loaded into my car. I had to say no thanks.

Where in West Virginia? I need an anvil, and one that's $200-heavy to load into a vehicle sounds PERFECT. I'll show up with an engine hoist if I have to.

I'm driving to Virginia at the end of this month, and would gladly detour to WVa to get a $75 anvil.

Oh yeah... PM me the name of the place or the town, so the rest of these vulture don't beat me to it!:bounce:

I missed a nice vise at an estate sale this Saturday, but they had this ginormous Prentiss for $100. The vise and stand must have weighed 150 plus. Here's a picture:

I passed because it was just too big and there was some damage near the top that would bug me too much. Someone scooped it up 10 minutes after I looked at it.

Sunday afternoon I picked up this Prentiss:

I put it next to my Columbian for comparison. The Prentiss has 4 1/2in jaws and weighs 60 pounds. The handle was rusted and bent, but the guy was really cool and had a ton of tools. He used the oxy/acetylene torch and heated it up and straightened out the handle for the most part. He wanted $100, but I offered $60 and he took it. He suggested I glass bead blast it instead of hot tanking it. Not sure what I'm going to do, but I'll put more detail in this one. I'm excited. Also, he's looking for another vise I'd be interested in. I wanted something smaller to mount onto my HF toolbox.

The big vise had too much damage to the top and the jaws needed to be replaced. The cross hatching was about all gone. The orange one was almost new by comparison. It'll look much better after a small restoration.

Hi folks,
I'm pretty new around here. I had been peekin' in every now and then but rejoined recently.

These are a couple of Wiltons I had rejuvenated this summer for shop in my sons new place. They were luckily both in pretty good shape, just neglected when dragged home.
They sat on a shelf until we happened upon a good bench to mount them on recently. An older 745 and mid-90's 1760.

Always wondered about the adjustable jaw....does it wiggle around? Seems like it would as compared to a non-adjustable version.

I've never had a need to use it with the pin out, so I don't know how secure the jaw would be while tightened. But with the pin in it is rock solid. Also the pin is in there so damn tight I didn't want to ruin it getting out. Someday I need to make a tool to remove the pin without damaging it.

Did anyone buy the 350 lb vise on e-bay? I forgot to bookmark the auction so I can't go back and see the end result.

If it was that Huge Ridgid on a stand, it went for $280. I think a local got a nice deal!

As long as your there, can you give us a shot of your anvil?

The anvil says Vulcan 10 on it. I really don't know anything about it. I've been told it wasn't of great quality, but it works good for my occasional fits of pounding.
