What brand vise is that giant blue one on the left back in post #8? I can't quite make out the name, and I can't find anything quite like it offered new except some junky looking thing by a company called KR. Mark

Nice Hollands #17!! Never heard of one before! I have a Hollands #16, and there have been a few pics of Hollands #18s floating around. Nice score for the price too!

New Kid here with a new vise. I hope to live long enough to finish a restoration. Yard stick on vise measures 26 inches from front jaw to end of slide. Jaws are 7 in wide. Runs about 190 lbs. Nice to know I can still carry my weight. I am not too worried about the exploded middle shown in 3rd photo as long as I keep the **** end of the sliding jaw outside the box on the fixed jaw. Looks like a previous user extended the slide too far and the end went into the box and did a fat kid on a teeter totter to the dovetail. Pulled the iron apart. Jaws look good. The more difficult issue is the wrong size garter. The collar shown in the first photo is too small. Unsure of model number on this one. Raised numbers on sides are foundry mold numbers or Parker Part numbers. Bronze nut has a T46 mark. Auctioneer presented this vise as a Northern Pacific railroad vise. Might be his interpretation of the part numbers. It could also be true, as NP has repair shops within 30 miles of the farm where I bought this one. This guy was covered in grease and rust, so could not see what I was buying, even with plenty of time to inspect. But, being an optimist I still think this is do-able.
So, if someone has a large garter laying around.... Also, I need a nut for a CP 104 that I bought because the parts that were present were super clean.

KSD - very nice Wards vise.....I haven't seen an anvil vise by Wards just mostly unmarked ones in old blacksmith shops. It looks like the Columbian may be missing the swivel base or it's late and I can't see well.

kas - that is one big vise.....I wonder how old the beast is? Good luck mounting it and don't call me when you do it. LOL

I refinshed the Record even though it didn't really need it. Went with Rustoleum Metallic Cobalt Blue.... Close to original, but sparkly :)

Great looking vice!! Im having mine bead blasted now, and I would like to know what to do with the main beam running though the vise. Do I paint it, or just clean it and oil it?

On mine I hit it with the DA sander to remove rust etc. Sometimes I also use 3M scotchbrite roloc discs. Then just mask it off while painting. See post #2219.
I buzzed the jaw inserts on a #120 belt sander, then hit the jaw supports & the top of the anvil section with my deburring wheel.

I don't oil mine because I live in the Mojave Desert where it's drier than a popcorn fart.

With .48" of moisture so far this year, I don't wax, oil, coat any raw metal on my vises. I drain my compressor out of habit. The main screw gets greased and thats about it.
I live in The Outlands where we have dust but no rust.

I used the wirewheel gently removed the rust and then applied a thin layer of grease...

Well, I found a pretty decent Parker 79 X on Craigslist Sunday. Got it out to the shop at work and snapped a picture before I begin cleaning it up.

Great vise antolod! It seems that the Parker X's are turning up this Spring.
What is the jaw width on the 79X?

Can anyone make sense of the numbers put on the sides of their vises? Maybe ya add the 7 & 9 and divide by 4? That 22X is Nice!

Thought that I would throw some pictures of my Wilton that I obtained in a swap from a member from a different forum. This one won't draw any Ooh's and Ahh's for size-but is a little bit different. I contacted Wilton and they indicated that they have no information on the model (2) but the part numbers are still valid. I was looking to replace the small logo on the right inset, which was destroyed with the clean-up!
This looks to be a Number 2 gun makers vise-thus the 4"x2" jaws. I am replacing the missing inserts with three sets of nylon, brass, and wood jaws-as time permits. Cleaning was conventional dunking in apple cider vinegar for the rust removal-light brass wheel to rough up-n/c brake cleaner-blow dry with air-tap 1/4"x20tpi holes for fasteners. Three coats of the good etching primer and three coats of Verde Green #7219-Hammered Rust Oleum-oiled up with light turbine oil and assembled. The tilt and rotate feature is a different variance than most vises. Just my two-wooden nickels worth.

The earlier swivels had the Wilton name stamped into them. I don't know why they took it off.

GJ members,

First of all, what a terrific Site and great group of people - just awesome!

I stumbled across this Wilton Saturday for $10 and decided to bring it home. Upon googling........I found this Forum. Checked out all the vises in this thread and am thoroughly impressed.

I think I have a mismatched Wilton 1645 based on the front and static jaw sequence? Definitely a "beater vise".......well worn and abused. I cleaned it up with some WD-40 / soft wire brush / new grease..... and will just put it to use on the bench. At least it holds what I clamp in it.......

The internal thread casting has 11/10/35 imprinted and I am certainly suspect about this being 1) original and 2) even a Wilton part???

Anyway - I'll hand this over to you guys for some insight - here are the pics:

Here is my other vise that came from my Uncle's Farm years ago........

I believe it is a Herbert's Machinery Vise...circa 1935-40 ish.....?

Not cleaned up at all, just a light duty vise that I've used for Regripping Golf Clubs for many years (with rubber jaws). I may try to spiff this one up a bit...

Gee, I wonder what color that will end up ;)

I'm leaning towards gray or black, but it definately won't stay powder blue.

The jaws are 6-1/4" wide. This thing is a beast. It was almost all I could do to move it from one bench to the other. I loaded and unloaded it in 2 pieces. According to the post from Lump here it weighs 159 pounds. I'll do a thread when I start restoring it.

I have now, and used to have, a brother-in-law named Craig. Neither one has offered to help. Is there something about Craigs that is so helpful??? Maybe it is just brothers-in-law. I will be fine, just have to find a bench tough enough to hold it. My 3 x 4 footer with a 3/8 inch hot roll top torques and lifts up when I put a lot of pressure on my 4 inch Paramo ("Hi-Duty" Brit vise - looks like the Record posted somewhere around here).

I'm actually going to redo this one shortly. It was going to be my welding bench vise, but I've changed my mind. It will be the same metallic blue as my Record 3VS on the previous page.

The Americanism "Hi-Duty" is an odd thing to find on a British made product, it's not an English phrase at all, I suspect Paramo were aiming at the US market with those vices?
In the years after WW2 iron and steel were in short supply and companies who exported goods got first shout as a cash strapped Britain tried to balance the books, as metal casters the Paramore Foundry would have certainly felt the pinch, it would probably have been export or die in their case.

Paramo are certainly more popular here than Record. I see lots of Paramos.
I may be wrong but I would say it's the opposite in Canada. I have used Record vices since the 70's and currently have 4 of them. I bought 3 of them used and, probably like a lot of us, I tend to quickly spot the type I like amongst the others at flea markets, garage sales, Kijiji ads, etc. Record and Paramo look a lot alike and I don't recall ever seeing a Paramo, around here anyway. If I did I most likely would have bought it!

I agree PC06 ... have a couple Records myself. I've never seen a Paramo (except on this website), and I've been in a lot of shops over the years. While I do like my Record, Columbian, Rae, Gray and Henry vices ... my Wilton bullets are still my favourite ... by far! Bill

Agreed. Never heard of a Paramo to be honest, let alone seen one .Lots of Records around here though they hardly ever go up for sale. Just about every machine, diesel and automotive shop I've seen here has Records. Hell even my Snappy guy has a big Record in his truck. Wiltons are non-existant here. I had to get mine in the US on our lst trip down south.

Welcome! Wilton casting numbers arn't always consecutive. No doubt its a 1645 and was their HD Mechanics vise. At sometime that vise had a swivel base. Yes, it was used alot. I can't say if it was used by a human being or an animal with a 16oz hammer.

So, I told myself a little while ago that I was going to take a break from vises for a bit...
but I couldn't pass up on this Parker 974 for $20! She's got some surface rust and a few battle wounds but it will clean up real nice...and the swivel wrench is still there! :bounce:
I guess I have a little soft spot for Parkers.
