I inherited a 3/8" drive Craftsman ratchet - 943796 that doesn't ratchet. Are there kits available for this ratchet, meaning is there a kit I need to locate & buy or does Sears warranty these out with an equal ratchet? Since I'm still digging for the correct kit and haven't found it...what is the correct kit?
Thanks,
Ray

AFAIK, obsolete ratchet; they will give you a equivalent ratchet; probably a raised panel. You might find someone here that has a NOS kit or look on ebay. Other wise go to Sears and they will give you another ratchet....

If it's an obsolete fine tooth ratchet I don't have a problem buying a kit for it. If it's just a regular ratchet then I'll exchange it. So, is it fine tooth or regular?
Thanks,

Are the new raised panels that much different from the older ones? I just assumed they replaced the metal selector with a plastic ones. Did the quality drop more than that? Is it better to put a kit (if available) in an older RP that swap for a new one?
Thanks,

That ratchet is not fine tooth. I think it has around 40 teeth. It's very similar to the round head Blackhawk ratchets, now that Stanley owns Blackhawk. Your ratchet is from when Stanley made some Craftsman tools.

I'm in a similar position. I have one of those ratchets that works, but the retainer ball fell out. I haven't figured out what I'll do with it.

The repair kit you need is "Ratchet Repair Kit Cat. No. 944796". I have one, simply walked into my local Sears about five years ago and asked for a repair kit. An employee went into a back room and came out of few minutes later, and gave me the kit for free.

AFAIK, they stopped issuing the repair kits to the stores for that particular ratchet; you never know, there might be some NOS @ your local store but I doubt it. If you were hell bent on getting a kit; using the stanley/blackhawk route might work... good luck! :)
Yes, the currently shipping raised panel ratchets; are just not up to 'snuff.... :(

If you can't find the correct Cman kit, Proto/Challanger kits work just fine with the added bonus that they are double pawl. I have one fine example in my hand right now that I converted years ago. I had the same problem as you; a rusted and frozen gear. Or, as another option, check out the current Blackhawk repair kit.

Any repair kit from a bunch of different import tri-wing ratchets will work in it. That is one of the ratchets that Stanley Works got sued over for making in Taiwan and not marking the COO on them. If you do exchange it you will probably get a new raised panel but at least it will be made in America.

Relative traded in a stuck 1/4 drive one of those and they gave him a new low profile.

Thanks for all the tips when it comes to finding a kit, at least now I know where to look. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and find one.

Blackhawk ratchet kits are pretty common on eBay. But not all will be dual pawl, as another poster mentioned.

Just make sure it isn't a kit for an older Blackhawk ratchet, when they were made by New Britain. Those ratchets are different (and better).

Hells bells! Just take it apart, soak it in penetrating oil, reassemble and use it! I've only ever had to have ratchets replaced due to breakage, otherwise I've always done what I stated above. I did this with a couple of old SK ratchets I inherited from my wife's grandfather and they work just fine.

This trip was easy. I just took it up to the counter, handed it to the pretty young lady. She gave it a quick spin, looked in the "rehab bin", then said "sorry we don't have the round ones"
"Ok, but it's a fine tooth". (she kinda gave me a "duhh" look) and says "I know, all we have is the teardrop style"
I smiled and said "That's OK"
Hell she was bummed they don't carry a good RHFT (knows the tools)
Smiled more, made small talk, thanked her for all her trouble:pimpflash
And left

OK going to take my 1/2 drive in and try my luck for a premium :D

Sent from my SCH-R720 using Tapatalk 2

I just had a 3/8 premium lock up. Took it to sears, the guy at the counter tried to pawn off some beat up rp ratchets from the crusty box under the counter.

Took a few minutes of back and forth but I left with a brand new ratchet.

Probably wold have been quicker to fixit myself, but I was heading by sears anyways.
