The 56" box has a caution with it not to add a top box. Fillled with tools it's already at or near its weight capacity, thus the reason not to add a top box.

I wondered why they didn't offer a top box. Sad to hear, I was considering it.

Thats surprising news. It seems to be much more stout than the wrinkle-finish box?

EDIT: I just pulled the manual up. I dont see any warning? (granted its 2am, and I'm not quite at my sharpest!) Maximum load rating is 1900 lbs. I cant see a top box exceeding that?

I saw the warning on a tag on a display model in the store.

Since you have seen the manual, look up the load capacity per drawer and add up all of the drawers. You'll see that the total for the drawers is 1958 pounds. Fill every drawer to capacity and you're already exceeding the max for the entire unit.

The 42" box has a 2900 pound capacity, but the total for all drawers loaded added up is 1221 pounds, leaving a lot of room for side boxes, lockers, top box, etc..

Granted, most aren't going to load every drawer to capacity.

****, now I've got to go out and buy the crinkle ones ASAP before they get replaced with the glossy. I must be the oddball that can't stand glossy red.

ya me to , i love my box just the way it is...

I assume this was directed at me because I said I was going to put a top box on the 56" roller cabinet?

If so, I don't care. I am not a mechanic at a shop, just an over zealous consumer who has always wanted some big **** red tool boxes full of tools.

I'm going to do what I want to do most of the time. If the 56" roller cabinet can't handle a 42" top box sitting on it with some tools in it, then it will go back to the store.

I'm gonna put my money on the possibility that it will stay in my garage.

Not necessarily directed at you as much as general info for anyone who might be reading this thread. If it was directed at you I would have quoted you.

Most people aren't going to be pushing the weight limits, so do as you please.

Went out and bought a 2nd wrinkle box so I have a matching pair. They had 4 left and an employee said once those are gone, can only get gloss.

Can anyone tell me of any CURRENT auto mags or other publications that have the HF ad with the 68784 gloss red box on sale for $389 (or is it $359)? All of my recent motorcycle mags only have the P/N for the crinkle red finish, and I don't subsribe to any four-wheel mags.

I bought the crinkle finish one a year ago. I also have one from Costco I use as a desk, it has a nice wooden top, you can see it in this video:

You bought that red box with the wood top from COSTCO!! Wow.. mind telling us what the brand is - and how much it was then? Looks like a really nice box.

thanks,
Carl B.

HF has always had a gloss black version of the 13-drawer box, but it has never been discounted that I know of. I don't see it listed any more on the web site. Let's hope they haven't just substituted the gloss red for that gloss black, at the higher price.

This link used to go to the gloss black 13-drawer cabinet. Now it is a dead end . . .
http://www.harborfreight.com/13-dra...l-quality-roller-cabinet-98084.html?hftref=cj

I did a little looking into this today and have come to my own conclusion that the new gloss red 13 drawer may be replacing the old gloss black 13 drawer that nobody ever had in stock and never went on sale----the link Steevo posted above shows the gloss black one nowhere to be found on the website anymore, and I couldn't find it through a manual search.
The item number for the new gloss cabinet is 68784. I called my local store and they had none in stock, none coming, but they said the warehouse has them so you could buy it online (which means $97 overweight freight charge:(). So I looked through my coupon stack and sure enough, all of the coupons I have in my last couple months of car magazines for the 13 drawer cabinet list both items 90320 (wrinkle red) AND 68784 (gloss red). I just went online and added the gloss red cabinet to my cart and tried to apply a $359 coupon.....it worked. So final price after coupon, tax & shipping is $497.....so $100 more than the wrinkle unless they become regular stocked items at some point in the future.

HF never had a gloss black 13 drawer they have the wrinkle finish also. All the pieces use to come in either red or black the stores only had red but my store would order the black for the same sale prices as red. I have two sets of black top, bottoms and 7 drawer side cabinets:thumbup:

Well, my local HF also said that the powdercoated was the new version.

They had the powdercoated bottom (7) and the glossy tops. I picked up the powdercoated bottom thinking I could get the top later but looks like I'm hosed and will have to buy it online, adding $100.

Why would a newer items have a lower item # numerically? Doesn't make sense.

Makes perfect sense if you consider the fact that most inventory management systems do not assign item numbers sequentially. Rather they are comprised of segmented blocks of numbers, each segment of which can provide different information about the item.

Who knows .... 68784 may be broken down for example as
68 - Catalog Item Only or maybe stand for a specific target market {consumer}
78 - might be a manufacture code
4 - might be a tool category

Whatever the item number tells the people at HF - it makes perfect sense to them.

I just picked up the 13 drawer box ($358) and the top box ($299) They just got them in last night. I just wish that they didn't have different lock. Would be much more convenient to just be able to use one key

Or they are more likely just randomly assigned numbers, a 5-digit item number only leaves 9,999 total items that you can carry and most of those have probably been used over the years as HF started as a catalog company with tons of SKUs to pick from.

I went to Sears and bought a 3 piece lock set keyed the same and put them in my US General bottom and side box. One key now. The Craftsman locks are a little shorter, so you have to add a little steel to the rod. If you have a MIG its a few minute process. I don't have the top box, but I would think the Craftsman lock could be made to work.

Hey Flameout. Is there something wrong with the lid on the top box? Notice both pics its open just a little.

Don't think there is anything wrong with it, but it doesn't shut completely unless it's locked. I really haven't looked into yet to see if I can get it to shut without being locked.

Thanks for the tips on the locks. I rarely lock my tools, but when I do it would be nice to only need the one key

I'm on the fence about the gloss. Maybe I'm weird, but something about the textured finish made it unique.

Agreed - I liked the textured finish - kind of went along with the "Industrial Pro" theme. It didn't try to be a Snap-On wannabe...:lol_hitti

Even with the Gloss Red - it is still one of the best VALUES in tool storage that I've seen in years - and still no real competition out there anywhere else.

Where'd you get a $350 coupon? I'm guessing that means the coupon is for $349.99? I have a current coupon for $359.99, but $349.99 would be even better. Thanks!
