And so today, after much searching and prayer to the Vise gods, the hunt for big game finally offered up a true trophy buck.

Picture it... I'm cruising CL this morning in a half-awake-stupor, then I stumble on an ad that mentions, among other things, "huge old vise" but no pics, no brand, no nothing, just a price ($200!!!). I figure maybe because the price is high, it's something decent, so why not check it out? :dunno:

I call the guy up, he says it's some brand with an "A" in it. I figure Athol and he confirms, reading off the side. I then ask for the number on the other side of the vise, to which, after hearing much grunting and loud clunking of iron-on-concrete as he turns it over, he says, "646, does that mean anything to you?" Does it?! :eyecrazy: :willy_nil :shocking:

"The elusive and mammoth 6 inch Athol vise with swivel base AND swivel jaw, rarest of the rare," I say to myself, but respond with "eh...six inch jaw with swivel base, right?" and he confirms. At this point I had to have it, price be damned.

The one and only real issue is that some genius put a bead across one edge of the swivel jaw (front facing) but it was done so poorly it didn't penetrate AND it was already broke free. A few minutes with a grinder and that'll be little more than a bad memory. Suffice to say, I could not throw my money at the guy fast enough, even with two dogs jumping all over me while I looked the vise over like a kid with a new toy.

I have not weighed it yet, but it is insanely heavy. I have a Prentiss #56 and this thing is much heavier, I'm guessing the 140 pound range, at least (anyone got official specs?).

Enjoy the pics, and yes it will be getting a full restoration at some point. Also the weight is approx. 175 - 180lbs.

Edit: More pics added (assembled vise) in post #22, found here.

That is a beast of a vise. I picked up an Athol 614 on the weekend myself and your vise would crush that little thing like a bug.

Any ideas on what you are going to do with it? Paint? Bare metal?

I have a 624 1/2 and a 614 1/2 actually. One I bought restored, in a light green with white lettering, which I thought looked really good with the brushed slide and wire wheeled handle. I might go the same route on the this one, definitely going to be painted one way or the other.

My handy Starrett catalog from about 15yrs ago lists the 646 as having a shipping weight of 202 lbs. You've got yourself one sweet and rare vise!

Tremendous, simply tremendous.

I recently purchased an Athol/Starrett 924 1/2 (4.5 inch ) for $65 and thought I got a good deal-- I drove 75 miles to get it. Yours could eat mine for breakfast.

I still haven't quite gotten over the size of it myself. Does tend to make all but my #56 Bulldog seem smaller than I remember them being!

Jesus!

I knew it felt heavy but I didn't realize it was that heavy. Thanks for the info, much appreciated!

I actually called on that vise and decided against it...what a fool!

I am glad a fellow member got it!

The guy had no idea what brand it was nor the numbers on the side nor the jaw size when I called, but he told me many people called about it when I got there to pick it up. Makes me wonder what exactly they asked him, if not those questions? :headscrat

I think it was up for at least a week before I found it too, which is insane. Had there been pictures or a better description, I'm sure I'd have missed out. Between being vague, no pics in his ad and his high price, it was basically luck that it lasted until I found it.

Yeah, I probably called right after he posted it but didn't really have the time to go out there. I am in the east valley and if I remember right he was in the west valley. He told me the same thing that is started with "A" and I was sure it was an Athol too. I never knew the model number though. If I had known it had a swivel jaw it would be mine right now... ;)

Can't wait for the pics after the restoration!

Holy cow, great deal on a truly monster vise. As a New Englander, I love the Athols, my recent acquisition, an Athol-Starrett 923 1/2 and my 624N are great tools. $35 and $20 respectively.

Shipping weight means crated and/or palletized for truck freight. So you are probably more closer to your original estimate of weight.

I'm not sure a pallet or crate could account for more than about 20 pounds at the very most, right? Or am I way off on that? :headscrat

I have several other vises in excess of 120 pounds each and this one is much, much heavier. Between the swivel base AND the swivel jaw, there's just so much extra meat that it's ridiculous compared to my other 6" vises, even my Prentiss #56. :eyecrazy: Moving those others assembled and trying to move just the main body of this one, now that they're side by side, is an eye opener. I'll try to get it weighed if I'm able to find a scale it'll fit on, I'm as curious as anyone else.

My 3" Starrett 923C has a shipping weight of 33 lbs per the catalog. The unpackaged vise weighs 28.3 lbs. You do the extrapolation. I would say at least 10 to 15 lbs of packaging.

No telling on how your vise was shipped exactly. I have seen like equipment crated and then attached to a pallet for truck freight shipping. It does add weight.

Regardless if it is 20lbs or 50lbs, the point I was making is that "shipping weight" figures includes the packaging material added and not just the core product weight itself.

No worries, I understood the point you were making and I'm aware that packing materials are included when a "shipped weight" is stated. My point was that while I know the vise itself is not the full 202, I would certainly guess the real weight is likely closer to the 200ish than to my original guess at 140ish, based on playing with my other 120lb+ vises and comparing the effort to lift 'em. ;)

If you are near a scrap yard, they would usually have no problem if you wanted to throw it on their large container scale. I've taken my big vises to my uncles yard and had them weighed.

Tossed it up on the bathroom scale, reading between 175 and 180 pounds, for whatever that is worth. :scared:

When I tear it down for restoration, I'll try weighing the parts one at a time on something more accurate, it's too big and bulky to do it properly when it's all together.

Pics added! You can see it dwarfing the coolant bottle AND my #56 Bull Dog beside it (the #56 is also a 6" jaw, ~130 lbs). What a monster!
