This may seem like a classified ad, but I hope it can go more the way towards multiple restorations....

So I looked at this jack a couple weeks ago. I believe its an early S4. I decided to pass on it at the time because of the condition. Its pretty rusted, but my major hold up was that it appears to have been welded on twice...

Fast forward another week or 2, and I decided to just buy it in hopes of helping some guys out on it with restorations...Plus come to find out, I think the T handle assembly will work on my SJ18..

Onto the pics...

Things already missing are I guess a hydraulic unit cover, the light switch assembly in the handle, and the crown/prong gears....

I've been spraying it down with Kroil over the last couple days, so hopefully it comes apart easy.

Bull is wanting the control rods in the handle I think...

I also saw where I think semis57 is looking for a lift arm...

If anyone else needs any certain part, let me know...

I also need some linkages. I'll get the details. What's the handle look like on this thing?

Its 11:10 PM here, and I'm outside taking pictures of a jack...lol

Do you agree that this is an early S4? Seems like everyone else's has the circle and lines on the sides instead of saying Blackhawk. Also this handle looks smaller....

CRDTI is way more knowledgeable than I am, as is Hiball. But yes, to me that looks like a much earlier design.

This is the original design of the S-4. I think these were produced from the late '20s to early/mid '30s.

These early production versions and updated design versions through the late '30s did not incorporate a light assy. as found on later model jacks from the '40s and '50s.

Here is an original design S-4 on CL showing what I believe is the correct configuration.

I'm a little confused. It looks like mine does have the spot for the light? So it must be a later model correct? Although, not as new as some others...

I did notice the one you posted has the blackhawk writing on the sides...

Check out post #160 of this thread:

This is my S-4, I believe it is one of the later design versions that incorporates the headlight as seen in this 1955 catalog:

There were some pretty significant obvious differences in the overall frame design, rear casters, "T" handle, control knob, and the lifting arm design during the course of production for the S-4. I am sure there were many other design changes that aren't so obvious.

Here is another version from a 1937 catalog with the same frame and lifting arm style as mine, but it does not have the light feature:

I don't know the exact time frame, but I would have to say that the light feature was incorporated into the design somewhere between 1938 and 1940. A patent search could possibly nail it down for certain.

All of these S-4 jacks are very old, the hard components are now for the most part obsolete. By now, every remaining S-4 has probably been rebuilt at least once and a lot of them have seen some very hard use and abuse.

Perhaps during the course of a rebuild, hydraulic unit exchange, or just over time, some parts on your S-4 were replaced by later model parts from another jack.

Sorry I have been off the air for awhile. Unfortunately the images are no longer available, and I don't know if you still have the lifting arm. Without the images I can't readily determine if your jack is the right style. I would appreciate a re-post or PM me and we can talk.

Again, apologies for not being around for awhile. Thanks for thinking of us who need parts!

Hi,

I realize that this is a VERY old thread, but I am at the end of my rope and need help! I need the main piston gland nut for the S4, do you still have this jack?

Thanks,
Sean
