Well, it's a T-jaw version which is good... Has all it's pipe-teeth, which is good... Doesn't look too beat up... $200-$225 would be my limit...

But what do I know, For some reason I seem to pay more of smaller vises and less for larger... :dunno:

Knew he was "out there" at 325.00. With as big as the vise is, i would have thought it had bigger jaws. Was disappointed to see they were only 5". Was going to go back and work a deal after the auction, but after I bought 3 vises at the auction I lost all interest.

Thanks for the weights on the Monarch vs Prentiss! The 1890 - 1930 era for me had the most wonderful looking items. The artwork....logos....lettering were all top notch. Go look at some billiard tables made during that era for some jaw dropping detailing. If I am changing U joints at home give me my Reed 3C.....but if I am going out on a Friday night to a formal U joint changing party, I will take a big Monarch to show off. That probably didn't make any sense so it's time to hit the meds again.

Rixter - almost forgot to tell you Grats on the Athol....the dynamic jaw support says it all "Built Tough". On my Athol swivel jaw the jaw pin has a pivoting handle and is knurled just like the base lock down. Also, the pin hole on mine is threaded so the pin has to be unscrewed. Check yours and see if it was ever threaded.

I really like the Athol. Specially at the 22.50 price. Yes, the jaw pin is threaded. Took me half an hour of looking like a damn fool to find that out. Any idea what color they were originally?

Dark machine grey. Almost all heavy machinery of the time was either black or dark machine grey. It looks really good on the Athols and i've painted about 5 just like yours, minus the swivel jaw.

Bought these 2 at the auction Saturday. Kind of like the Paramo even if it is "Made in England"ImageUploadedByTapatalk1345687507.492148.jpgImageUploadedByTapatalk1345687525.498416.jpg

How big is the Paramo? Those are near exact clones of the Record and Woden vises, also made in England.

Odd how Paramo simply bolted the roughly triangular base to the swivel base. My 6" has it the same way.

So, the last time I posted I broke a drill bit trying to drill out this pin in a Wilton ShopKing.

I had one last chance (the other side) and last night I decided to give it a try. Used the drill press and was able to drill that side out. That let me pull out the handle and then punch out the broken drill bit and pin on the first side:

I might try and thread the holes and put a screw down the hole so it's less of a B___ next time.

Just an idea, perhaps the same maker that made your vise made mine, only markings on mine are the patent date in 1912, and "380A". Mine looks more like an anvil than a vise.

Got the 4" No. 125 Monarch through an Ebath, and then wire wheeled everything. I didn't go for the polished look on the bare steel, just used a really fine wire wheel for a burnished look, so the metal looks more its age. The paint is Semi gloss black.

Man, how many coats of paint that thing must have for the letters to be so blurry!

Yeah, you noticed that too...

When I was re-doing one of my vise stands that someone gave me, I counted 5 distinct paint layer colors before I got down to bare metal!!! There was so much paint it filled in all the horrible welding the person did... :willy_nil

Jesus that Reed was big!! And for 75? Somebody is still smiling from that deal. If i had known about it, i would of picked up that thing. I've got a friend in Greenville, SC and he has no problem sending me junk i buy on ebay or CL. It's a good thing he works for a truck rental company and always has an empty truck coming to CA:thumbup:

Haha... yeah I saw that on CL too... I forgot how much he wanted for it but it seemed kind of high... He didn't say the size either but I guessed around 4", doesn't look like I was too far off. How much did you snag it for?

Like I said... I paid a little more than I'm used to LOL... Lets just be happy it's in the GJ family now :) It's in really good shape. It's just dirty from saw dust because the guy had it in his shop... He builds cabinets. He got it back in 81 or 82 around the the time I was born LOL! It was given to him by a widower. It was literally around the corner from my house no joke.... I really like it. Sometimes you can't put a price on happiness... I guess thats why I bit the bullet and bought it. No regrets brother, and its gonna look great on my new work bench

That Wilton Cadet he had is in really really good mechanical condition! I know he's asking more than what we're used to getting these things for, but who ever gets thats vise is gonna get a great piece of equipment! It's better than any POS you would get from the store 10 fold!

J Hav - that is a great Craftsman vise! It has a nose like mine with the 3 cuts on it and yours is a touch bigger. Those vises just make you smile when you see one...maybe it's remembering when Sears...JC Penny....Montgomery Wards...etc had the best catalogs that you could put in a bathroom. LOL

Thanks guys! It has it's own personality to it huh :) That's why I had to have it. When I saw it on CL I tried doing some research on it and couldn't find to many pics or post on it. I figured I wouldn't come by one of these in this condition again for a long while... It's not like it's a one in the million vise or something. I just like collecting these pieces of american tool history, and sometimes one comes along and really gets at you...Boy if only these old farts could tell some stories lol. I doubt I'll ever part with it.
