I have the best wife in the world!!!
What are the 2 best words a woman can say to a man bidding on a big vise???
Answer: Bid Higher!!
Well, I did and now I have a Hollands 18 vise with a killer stand. Clearly I brought it no where near the "you ****" territory but I always wanted something like this in my barn. I thought the stand was really cool and made the vise a complete package ready to use. Plus the stand was made in a town about 45 minutes from my town which I think is cool.
Here is the vise in my truck
This vise would not have been possible for me without my portable gantry crane.
Here she is
Here is the stand. The stand was originally a saw stand according to some pictures I saw at vintage machine.
Fully opened she comes in just over 36 inches
Opens 12 1/2 inches
Jaws are 8 inches
The main screw has a small screw in the center. Hopefully it works like a Chas Parker. The handle is 1 inch diameter and it would be nice to tighten the small screw to stop the handle from pinching me.
This winter I plan to send the stand out for sandblasting, then prime, paint and detail the letters. As for the vise I need to think about paint or bare steel but I am leaning towards a thin coat of satin black. I know weight will come up so I believe the vise is about 300lbs, I calculate the adaptor about 60 lbs and I calculate the stand at about 388 lbs for a grand total of about 750 lbs
