I have been reading through many vise threads on here and it has gotten me wanting my first vise. Anyways I found this on CL and wondered what kind t might be, only asking $40 is that worth it?

That was sort of how I was leaning, but thought I'd ask and make sure I wasn't passing on a real GEM.

it's a china town one, just looked at one here local while picking up my new brake, guy was selling his for 60,i told him good luck with that.i bought a huge wilton bullit a couple years ago for 25,and my newest is a yost holland 33c for 80,in my sig.

just keep an eye out for old, big, american, and local.

I'd pay $20, It's nice to have a vise you don't really care about to beat on. Besides, I've had my similar china made one for quite some time, and absolutly tortured it, It's still going strong!

Here's the same/similar vise new:

http://www.walmart.com/ip/20998902?...1=g&wl2=&wl3=18157216390&wl4=&wl5=pla&veh=sem

In that respect, it's worth the $40. If it was local to me, I'd probably snag it - the design intrigues me, and for $40, it'd be fun to strip it and repaint it.

I agree. I have that same vice and use it as my "outside" vice. I have it mounted on a stand that has a 5 gallon metal can with concrete in it as a base. I've had it since the mid 80's and it's been great.

Generic Chinese multipurpose vise. Probably worth $40 if you need one right away.

It's a "tide me over until I find a better one" vise.

I'd run from it. I have one that I bought years ago from Cummings. It does not hold tight when really cranking on the piece you have clamped in it, the swival moves. On top of that the casting is a turd covered in bondo.

I bought this long before I was on GJ and a vice was just a vise. Long long ago, I'm reformed now.

Are there any "non-Asian" vices that have rotating jaws that can clamp round stock? To me that's a good feature to have.

That big Columbian for $35 is a real score. Those are seriously beefy and well made vises. It's 65 pounds, so a little heavier than he estimated. I don't see those often with the rotating base either. A little clean up and you could give that vise its forever-home.

Man, if that $35 Columbian in Dayton was there when I drove up to my parents' house for Thanksgiving, it'd be in my shop in Atlanta now, and I'd have giggled the whole way home.
I had a slightly smaller Columbian, and it was a very good vise. I replaced it with a 92-pound Reed, only because I found the Reed for $45.
I probably wouldn't have bought the Reed if that Dayton Columbian was in my shop already.

Just last week I redid a Columbian identical to that. (Without the swivel base though.) If you want to see what one looks like all cleaned up check out the below photos. This one was in worse shape than the one posted in this thread, just from the looks of it. It's a really easy vise to restore also.

Vises of this type vary a lot in quality depending on who made them. With limited exceptions, they're only rated for light duty. That one looks better than some but if everything is okay, I still wouldn't give more that $30 for it.

The more I read about good old vises the more I want to know. Is this vise pictured an old quality vise or just a newer import knockoff? It seems heard to tell, without seeing them in person or it saying Reed, Wilton, Parker, Columbian, etc... On its side.

It might be a Nutyp, which is the original of this style. First made in the 1920s.

That one could very well be the real deal...

Several details: U channel replaceable jaws, No indication the paint is on over a thick layer of bondo, and the swivel base locking lever is not the usual plated undersized POS.

Well it looks like I am the .1%(joke's in the ad) :(

It's scheduled to be bought tomorrow. I feel like CL is too popular these days! I'm always too late!

I want to re-state that the Columbian was all but sold. I called about it and the seller said someone was already scheduled to look at it. I that person doesn't buy it (I don't see that happening) then I have a chance at it.

Does thick extra close picture help anyone identify this vise? I know it's grainy, but thought I'd try.

J. Rob,
Grab the Wilton for $100. They usually go for lot more than that. Saw the post, and if I wouldn't have just bought one just like it, I would be all over it.
