Has anybody nickle plated handles and small parts?
There is a place next door that does, just wondering how it look and how durable?

Amen, Les! :)

I've been following this thread and just picked up this cool Wilton 645, I'm a little unclear whether this model was actually made in the USA, but it looks like it will last me while longer...

**** . Took the vise apart to adjust the saddle for wear and discovered that the main screw was broken at the flange near the hub and then repaired. Don't know how they fixed it but the two parts move when I pull on them . I've been using it but I don't know if they will come apart with continued use and it makes owning and using the thing un-fun.

And then draw polish it right!!

Kevin

Hey Kevin,

I always enjoy talking to plastics professionals. I got out of plastics in the '90s. We ran mostly pvc, cpvc, styrene & abs. The molds were not as precise (ex. thin wall), and the cycles weren't as fast back then. So a quick sanding was sufficient. We only had to polish the cores & cavities.

Pictured here is my old sprue cleaner that I described in a previous post. And to stay on topic, I'll use this to clean the tapered hole in my pivot jaw vise.

What did they do? Thread the shaft into the head? If so that's a decent fix I wouldn't be worried about.

Don't know if its threaded on or the screw was cast into the hub (sort of like Parker did with the reinforcing bar in the slide). It moves about 3 64ths when I pull on it and it moves a few thousandths side to side but will not twist. I closed it really tight and checked again and it didn't get worse so maybe it's been like this for a while.

I never used a set up like that but have created plenty of sprue's in my career, I always hand polished for finish since most were .156 dia small end. (Mud Units) If the sprue bushings were hard then I would polish the edm finish. Really did not take long, honestly I would be nervous using circular polishing techniques since a sticky sprue is not liked by molders.

I have a possibility of two swivel jaw 4-1/2 Wiltons, Sent picture to Autopts and he said get them. $150 each. Really good shape. I'll post pictures if I can get them. 125 miles away from me and that includes through the heart of Denver. I am a mountain boy and city driving is not my bag.
Building Prentiss 20 and 21 and Starrett 326 and 926 jaws tonight.

Kevin

This is my spare Wilton. (It is for sale in the classified). I have used Columbian and Wilton vises in my 40 years of mechanicing and they are both the best.

I have a Reed 1 C that's been in my garage for 25 years. I'm interested in its history. Seems pretty old but in good shape . Thanks

Anyone have experience with the Snapon Forged vise? I really like the fact that it has replaceable jaws as opposed to the Rigid look alike. I couldn't find any other pictures of it other than their website

I would be curious to what other members say about the two screw that either push on a angled block or pin to adjust the angle of clamp. Web site mentions (Jaw adjustment screws ensure proper alignment and accuracy).

I had the same issue with one of those vises. It looked like the factory weld broke, with movement similar to what you describe. It wouldn't come apart by tightening the vise as tight as I could with the standard handle. I believe the problem was caused by the dynamic jaw being out of square in the area that the screw seats on, so it the jaw was machined. A couple of pictures here:
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=1903509&postcount=10

To repair the screw, I undercut the damaged area in the lathe then brazed it and cut the flange square to the shaft.

Ah you guys with machines and the ability to do things correctly. I'm jealous .
In one of your pics I can see a lot of wear on the slide were the non threaded portion of the screw bears against it. Mine has that same wear problem and other old vises I've owned have too. I've had good luck just cutting a strip of brass into a makeshift bushing and stuffing it in. Not as nice as an actual lathe turned bushing/bearing but the difference was noticeable and for not much effort. Thanks dynodale hearing that folks have similar issues and were able to save them makes me feel that this vise is going to be okay.

Prentiss Bull Dog No. 56 in good condition.!

Its about time i can get a vise that will look good in my collection and not another pesky Wilton or Chas. Parker.

That little Craftsman on top was from the next sale and has 3.5" jaws

Well I have had two opportunities to buy a Reed 103R for $85 and a Rock Island for $45 from a guy that contacted me locally. I passed on them both and he sold the Reed for well over $100 plus shipping on eBay and the Rock sold for $65 plus shipping. I did end up buying an old Art Deco Wilton Shop King for $25. It's a decent vise but the base needs repaired. It has a crack. I have a friend that does cast welding for me that i think can fix it. Anyone think this is not fixable?

Blur,
Production of the 1C (and 2C, 3C, 4C) began in the late 1930s. It was a replacement for the 31 (and 32, 33, 34). It remained in the Reed lineup with small changes over the years until it was replaced with the lighter built 1CA sometime in the 1970s or 80s. If you post up a good side pic someone may be able to give a better age range.

Got this little thing from a scrap pile. Needs some cleaning but the only thing wrong with it is the one jaw is tilted out for some reason. Any ideas how to fix this. If you can't see it in these pics I can get some more.

Outlaw, me too. While the bullets are tried and true and about as **** as a......,well they're not bad looking. These shop kings have the lines and curves like no other. I've seen a couple Craftsman branded vises that have similar lines but still not this detailed. The nose of the dynamic jaw is awesome too, sorry I don't have a pic of it. I believe this was considered the poor mans vise after the war. I'm going to do a proper resto and put some copper jaws on it and let it serve as my light duty vise.

Hey Fryme - I also love the looks of the Wilton Shop King. I tried to purchase one from a flea market. Unfortunately the lower part of the dynamic jaw was broken in half (sorry, no pictures). It would have been a good candidate for one of my folk art projects. The dealer wanted $20. I offered him $5 (which was $4 too much), but he wouldn't budge. No sale but I should be able to find a good one this summer. BTW, I wouldn't give up on a vise with a crack in that area of the base.

After some trials and consideration I got two Brockhaus Heuer vises for myself. As these products are top notch quality I decided to take them into my portfolio of German tools that I sell worldwide. I will continue to put them up on Ebay but the prices there do include part of the Ebay fees which I will gladly discount to all GJ members.

Please also note my new Lista cabinets ;-)

Looks like i've been on a winning streak this weekend. Today was a great sale but not much by the way of tools. I did get lots of other great stuff including this bench vise for a few bucks.

I think this is my second Yost i've ever found and its in great shape, jsut a little dirty/rusty.

Could someone post a link to the old catalog pages that show Reed vises...I just spent a hour looking for them without luck.

A suggestion...old catalog pages that would allow one to determine vise manufacturer and model should be collected into a sticky at the top of this MASSIVE vise thread.

Many of the ads and catalog pages that get posted here are collected on the vise wiki, available here:

Hope that helps,

So apparently this is the vise **** thread. I am looking at restoring this one. Note someone put some aluminum jaws on it.
