Here's a 9400 HD, I just finished up... It's marked 11-46.
It's headed to ebay unless one of you guys want to trade me a 300S for it...
That's right, my 4" for your 3".... PM me if interested.

ZOOM

Zoom,
For what that 4" will bring you, finding a very nice Wilton 300 will not be a problem and you will have money to spare. That's super nice for 1st generation.

LOL... I'm guessing it wasn't one of those, "But we will always be friends...." kind of break up....

I wish my living room looked like that...

Our kitchen table looks like that now and part of the living room where my "office" easy chair is was like that for a couple of weeks while I worked through things. (finished up yesterday afternoon, mostly...) :rocker:

I know... I just thought I'd try to make someone happy... I've got a few 4" bullets, but no 300S... My good deed for the day I guess. :D

Thanks though Nick, this vise is actually the one that started me collecting, I went to pick up a steel table for $75, there happened to be a vise attached to it... took it home, took it apart and was HOOKED!

It is in great shape, other than some hammer marks on the handle... the Jaws are surprisingly very nice, they must be rockwell 65... no idea.

I'll include a before picture I took when I got it, I was like a kid at Christmas when I figured out what I had.

I realize I am dominating the thread today, but I have to add this one I got today...

A few pages ago we got invaded with several "roataing head" vises, and still don't seem to have a "confirmed" COO (country of origin) on them...

Well, I bet you can guess with certainty where these two were made...

I have posted the Craftsman before, but I just got to Sawyer today.

Thought you might get a kick out of them...

Apartment too small...?

I noticed when I got rid of 120lbs of dead weight, it freed up about 2,600 square feet in my house...
Now I can put my toys wherever I want to...
Yes, that is a Reed 4C, a Wilton 600S and a little 5" Ridgid in the livingroom (and a few hundred sockets...)!

No wife, no kids, no rules... :rocker:

And just how many vises are in YOUR "waiting room", Sir?
HAHAHAHAHA!

Sadly just the two... But I'm trying...

EOC_Jason,

I snapped a quick picture of the "emergency waiting room" for you...

Theres another pile in my workshop (operating room and display items)...

And another pile in the garage (non-urgent care)...

I usually have about 3 in some form of restoration...

I like a change of pace from time to time....

Take it easy!

OK... Here we go...

These are in my garage and most of them aren't too important to me...
EXCEPT the 3 Anvils... #1 = 332lbs, #2 = 100lbs and #3 = 60lbs. I love ANVILS!!!

Here are a 4" and a 3" bullet on pow-r-arms, also several "unique" and some not so unique "wall hangers"... and an old miter vise.

Here are some works in progress and a couple of 2" babies and a couple of 2-1/2"'s, a couple of baby anvils and 4 small pow-r-arms...
I still have a Wilton C2, a 5" American Scale and a 4" Wilton Cadet soaking. And my daily workers are a Hollands 5" and a Morgan #135... these 5 vises arent pictured... Im sure there are more somewhere around here, it will be like Christmas when I find them!

Thats it for now, but if my plan works out, I should have 2 BIG surprises for you soon...

Plus, as I posted a couple of pages ago, I have a sweet swivel base Wilton Bullet 9400 HD I would be willing to trade for a Wilton #300S... I can't believe no one has jumped on that offer yet...?

Take care and Happy Hunting!!!

ZOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

Cool old Prentiss!!! Welcome to the forum ERIMILLE! From now on you'll know not to post a vise right after DEMOMAN post one of his prehistoric MEGA-VISES... He gets all the headlines! LOL!

Thanks for the welcome (and I appreciate the caution on timing my posts ;) ).

I admit most of my more interesting vises are for woodworking, but the Prentiss is my go to when dealing with metal that benefits being motionless. While I keep thinking I could use a larger vise (I have a rusted Ridgid F-60 that one of these days will unstick), the Prentiss as-is simply hasn't ever let me down.

I have very little knowledge on machine vices, but even less on Prentiss and less still on the 181. While i'm curious about its age, I'm mostly interested about how best to dismantle it for a more thorough cleaning. One of these days I image I'll find the retaining pin that seems to be preventing me from removing the screw ;)

Phy6 drove up from the DC area last summer and bought some big ones from me. Cool part, when he was there, he had a really good camera and took a bunch of pics last summer when it was a real mess.

He posted the pics, they start near the bottom of page 238...

Flip it upside down, right where the main screw touches the dynamic jaw, there should be a collar/bushing with a set screw in it. Turn the main screw until you find the set screw, loose the set screw all the way then the main screw should back out of the main nut, leaving the dynamic jaw free to be pulled out, after the main screw is completely out...

I've long suspected I can't keep up with you boys.......now I'm sure of it.

My contribution was rescued from an aircraft hanger being scrapped, restored and GIVEN to me by a buddy.

Looks Great! I love Morgans, they are a solid vise, nobody really collects them (except me I guess) and you can get OEM parts from the factory still... That 5" wil serve you well!

Now for the ugly vises I use at work. This is why Wiltons have such a good reputation. These have been beat on by idiot mechanics for decades......including a little by this idiot

It's time for everyones favorite fun game... "WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!!!"

Let's hear it gentlemen... I've got two for you today...

The first one looks very Bulletesque, but there are some major differences...

I have it next to a 9400HD marked 11-46...

No markings whatsoever...

Where did this thing come from?

I've posted this before and got NO GUESSES...

My guess is that is is a blacksmiths vise for shearing bar or rod...

Put the hot material between the two blades, tighten, then bang both sides of the vise with hammers, rod is cut...

Notice how the dynamic jaw rests on the table top, very stable for such a skinny vise...

Let's hear what this is, or if you've ever seen one like it...?

I had to google SWMBO, you are a smart man, and pretty damn funny too!

Thanks Zoomie!

Dang man, you are affecting the position of magnetic north with all that iron in one place!

Suggestion for regaining some floor space:

Get some concrete building blocks and some 2X12's , build some "vice" racks  against that near empty wall (maybe space them out a bit) and at about 4' up anchor them to the wall. then you can rack these babies, and not have to lift from the floor all the time. Big one's waist high, smaller up high, and down low...

I'm thinking about something like that here, only on a MUCH smaller scale! :lol_hitti

Zoomie, I think this is not for cutting rod but for the opposite. But welding two pipes/rods together...

The "Blades" are actually stops; you set it up, put pressure on and the stops keep you from mooshing them too far together during the weld. (I'm thinking torch welding here, not arc, and more of a fusion process, not adding material.)

I like that theory! I've been staring at it for a few years...

I may give Matchless Antiques a call and see if they have a guess...

But I like that idea... Hmmmm...

Thanks!

Zoomie, I was wondering why the loose vises here were slowly moving eastward. I checked the angle of movement after I saw your recent posts, and guess what? They are creeping toward Kalamazoo, MI! Pretty soon I expect the cyclonic rotation to start, with the cone tipping toward the same location.

Don't say cyclonic rotation in Kalamazoo! We had and F3 tornado come through town, right down Main Street on May 13th 1980! And I'm still shaking! It would be raining vises in the Zoo! They were finding cars 20 miles away (that might be an exaggeration), think how far an aerodynamic Baby Bullet would fly... They'd be scattered all over the eastern seaboard! Haha!
