So we're getting ready to move and the house were looking at has an old (but nice!) 2.5 garage, that stands 15ft from the house.

It also has the original wiring (not so nice) consisting of two wires running over antique insulators, through the siding, and to all the dim 60w bulbs with foil pie plate reflectors. Oh boy!

Now i've rewired a garage before, my current one had this exact setup that I tore out and installed a 120v sub panel for lights and outlets... not a problem. However, in this here gee-raj I want to install a 240v outlet for an air compressor... this I have not done yet. I understand the 240v wiring for an outlet but...

Can I run a 240v outlet off a sub panel or do I need to run it directly from the main box inside the house?

You'd have to have both sides of the line out in the garage to have 240V. If the garage has only two wires (sounds like knob and tube) then you don't have it. Best practice would be to run a whole new line from the house panel to the garage and set a proper panel. Then run all the garage wiring out of that panel.

Great picture!

OK let me rephrase that.... can I run a 240v outlet off of the sub panel I install in the garage? Doesn't sound like it would be a problem but I've never had 240 outlets off of anything before.

Yeah that old stuff is gotta go at the very least... no way I would even try to use it as it sits now just for lights! The way it rubs on the trim is just asking for an accident.

Yes, you can run a 240v receptacle from a 240v subpanel.

In response to your thead title, no u CANNOT wire a 240v plug off of a 120v subpanel. Its not physically possible since theres only one hot leg in the panel. If u want a 240v plug, youre gonna have to run a new line from your main service panel into the garage and install a subpanel!
