I was ordered by a few guys to repost this from another vise thread

Here is my Prentiss Bulldog picked it up a few weeks ago for $35 at the thrift store. It still has some really old gray lacquer paint on it, and light use. It does seem to have a lot of play in between the base even though it is very tight against the bench. The strange thing is I only notice the play when there is something in the vice that acts as a lever. It is good and tight otherwise, and seems like either something is missing or it has a design flaw. The metal in the base all looks like it is in good shape. Anyone know if there might be a part I am missing?

Nice vise! And I'm glad to see you follow orders so well! please PM me for my Shipping address! I'm in no hurry; overnight is not required!

Rasman----Great job on the Craftsman. You had a near perfect vise to work with.

Cclfn----You did good by bringing home the Superior. That thing looks similar to a Craftsman, rotating head, minus the pipe jaws and swivel base. Never seen a Superior with a rotating head. That's an odd duck. Odd is good. Odd is very good.
There is a Superior on page 29. That's what most of them I've seen look like.

 Love the paint job Rasman WTG

va.grouseman,

Hey thanks for the page # I looked at it and it reminds me of the little Columbians in that same style, but this one does not seem to be built to handle much. Look at how small the handle is on this thing. You could certainly bend it by hand if over tightening something. Do we know anything about the company? did they make their own or were they branded like Craftsman?

Wes

I really don't know a thing about them, but this site is blessed with some very knowledgeable historians. I know somebody on here has the skinny 0n the (Superior vise history). We're waiting.

Legba, you also need to find/fab the side plats to support the vise in the angled positions. Google image for "Drill press angle vise" and you will see what you need. (you may be able to get replacements from Palmgren that should work)

Outlaw is calling me out for not getting this posted faster!

I stopped at a garage sale today that I ahd been to about a year back. I remembered he had a Wilton Bullet 5" combo last time and asked him about it this time. He called his son who agreed to sell it. Got it home and checked it over. The bad: No jaw inserts, the ledge the jaw inserts sit on was broken off on both sides, the jaw insert screws were broken off, the dynamic jaw was loose on the tube, on the swivel base the inner part was cracked. The good: The screw and handle were in decent shape, the swivel nuts and carraige bolts were in usable shape, the pipe jaw inserts were in decent shape, the outer swivel ring was in good usable shape and it had the rear "cup".

Now this vise was obviously in poor shape and not worth fixing for a vise I didn't plan to keep. BUT I have an older 5" Bullet that needed the screw and handle, the swivel nuts and carriage bolts. Some of you may rember this vise I found outside rusting away a while back and amazingly it freed up after a little work.

So a little parts swapping took place. I will have to shorten the carraige bolts a little bit.

Some notes of interest:
The new screw is a little shorter than the older one and the slot for the retainer plate is thinner.

The older retainer plate is actually thicker than the new one even though it was worn. Misplaced my SAE micrometer so used my metric one.

New one 4.66mm thick
Old one 4.8mm thick on worn area, 5.16mm thick on unworn area.

I used the old one because it gave less slop.

The older swivel base had a ear rusted partially away so I was going to use the newer swivel base but that's when I found the crack on the innner ring.

Now I just need to get the broken jaw insert screws out and some new jaw inserts. Maybe I will get it finished one of these years after all!

Update on my "Paramo" No 3, only got around to final assembly this morning, after a new paint job. I am pretty happy with the final result; before (previously posted here) and after pics, with new soft copper jaws made to measure.

Where are y'all finding all these little vises? I want one badly but I can't even seem to find one for an Outrageous price, much less a deal.

I found mine on eBay... I can't say that it was a steal but it was considerably cheaper than most.

A lot of people are turned away from a vise that "looks" junky. But there is a HUGE difference in a vise that just has surface rust or crappy paint VS one that has been beaten to death and a handle that is bent in every which direction.

Also the day the auction ends I find has a huge role to play in price. Most people will end their auctions on the weekends to maximize their viewers. Ones that end during the weekday and during afternoons will have less bids (usually).

Patience is also the key, there will always be another one for sale.

I wouldn't mind paying over what one is worth for one that hasn't been abused. I just can't find them. Do you normally find them with the Power Arm already attached or purchase it separately.

I know what you mean on auctions ending during the week. The best deals on auctions I have won are the ones that end in the middle of the night. :)

That turned out well and nice job on the soft jaws. I have a Record No. 3 which is pretty much the same thing. They're a great vice.

Here's my E-bay Wilton. Had it about two years. Sniped it about 11:30 pm., $190.00, and that is still outrageous.

2 inch jaws,----4.8 lbs.----double lock down.-----------Rock Island 577----6 inch jaws----156 lbs.----single lock down. Go figure.

How about that baby Wilton with the 1/2'' jaws. Now that would be worth $190.00.

Picked this up today. Guy sold a really nice Columbian right as I got there so I asked if he had any more. Called me back to his garage and pointed out a Morgan under a bench and told me to dig it out if I was interested. Started digging and found this under the Morgan. Made a deal for $45. No sticker, but it's stamped 1750. I think it's missing the rear cap. Date is 4-79. Handle is really straight, the swivel hold downs are slightly bent, and I think one of the jaws at least is hand made so I'm going to need new jaws.

What size was the Morgan?

Taller than this one, jaws looked about the same size. Wasn't a swivel and I didn't have enough money with me to try and make a deal on more than one.

For anyone who's interested, I found the replacement jaws for the 1750 cheapest at Advance Auto - $23.09.

http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/we...roduct_jaws-insert-1750-645-wilton_22987527-p

They have to be shipped, but I needed some other stuff so I got them included with free shipping and a then a 20% discount coupon for about $18.

This 8" Parker is on a lowboy stand. Its the oldest vise that ever came my way. 1854 wirh ext. Pat. Dates thru 1867. Its been brazed sometime in the last 140 years but as you can see, its holding. Nothing in life is for sure though. With the stand, I'm guessing about 250 lbs.

Hello Vise Friends,

Pictured below are my latest finds:

1. I have a Littlestown #25 that I bought for $10.00. It's complete (except for the base) and I plan to use for a folk art project.

2. This morning I stopped at a yard sale. After purchasing a few tools, I asked about the "old bench vise" that I saw in the corner of the garage. It's a 5" Wilton Combination Utility Vise. The lady asked me what I would give and I said "$20.00". She accepted. I'm wondering if I paid too much...

I believe that rule number one for this thread was; if you like it, or need it, there is no such thing as paying too much.

just my $.02 :)

You're correct. I went to yard sales this morning and bought enough tools to fill my cargo van. I'm as happy as a camel on Wednesday...(hump day).:D

I started taking the jaws out tonight. The static jaw looks like it was drilled and tapped for larger screws, and on the dynamic jaw I got one screw out and the other snapped near flush. Guess I get to have a bit of fun getting a new set of jaws into it.

That must have come with red paint. I don't think I've ever seen you paint one red. It does look nice though. The braze is a nice color contrast to the red.

Make sure to take a video when you try to break the bricks.

Auto-----That big red dude is a toe stubber, for sure...

Good looking old beast...

You're probably going to need a long piece of pipe to crush those bricks, though...

Fred,
When I stripped off the old red paint, Parker had that off Green on it. I almost don't want to sell it but its listed already.
olddh...the grip was so nice I actually could have turned that handle more.

I think Parker flubbed up a mounting hole for the collar. The open hole on the left I think has a broken drill bit in it. That hole is unthreaded and it will not accept the 3/8" bolt that holds the collar. They drilled tapped a additional hole in the collar to the left of the original. I have another Parker 8" here and 3/8" was I think standard on those collars. Neat eh?

The latest two additions:

Unmarked two rod slide clamp vise w/1-3/4" jaws, and a small rail style vise, w 1-1/2" jaws. That one is marked L H & F Co. and No. 1.

Anyone know who L H & F is? :dunno:

Zoom.
I saw a rare Chicago 6" No.6 swivelback on here sometime ago. I've only seen the Schiller Park 400SJ and 450SJ and I think Wilton quit making them when the newer ones came out with the bigger anvil in back. I'll check my catalogs.

I saw that old school 6" too, it was sweet!
I know they made a 4-1/2" in Schiller, and I just bought a 3-1/2" made in Schiller, so they made that too... Didn't know about the 4" though... Another white elephant for me to hunt... I wonder if there were more sizes produced in Schiller... Hmmm... Thanks Nick!!!
