I've been looking for a vise for a long time now and just came across this Anchor Industries 6" on CL. Anyone know what the quality of these is like. I've found nothing searching here and Google. It seems that at 150lbs it must be pretty rugged. He’s asking more money than i was looking to spend, but I’m tired of hunting for a steal on a used Wilton.

You will HAVE TO PROVE to me that this is USA made.
My Google search says it is an imported product, probably China.
Go search Google yourself and the company. You will agree.

I've googled it too, the name is just to generic (i think). After searching by the guys phone number it comes back to a machine shop here in NH called "Anchor Industries" and a few of the business directories list them as "Mfg Metal Clamps And Machine Vises"

Heres another pic form a different classified ad

The only reference i found to an Anchor Industries vise was from a member here, BanjoSavesTheDay, just mentioning that he has one. Maybe ill try sending him a PM if no one chimes in.

But i do agree with mrchuck, it is possibly made in China

Just looked the pics more carefully and think i saw MADE IN USA on it

If you can raise Kole (BanjoSavesTheDay), we will all thank you. He has not posted for many moons......we fear domestic bliss has befallen him. Kole is the man for big vises.

I Am - did you check out the very old and lovely Prentiss 5" vise in Roxbury? It is only $55 and just needs one mounting tab repaired. We are talking Prentiss Bulldog 5" swivel base vise for $55.......hop on it if it is still there.

Craig, i did see that Prentiss, but the distance and some unsatisfactory responses to some email questions turned me off.

Thanks for the heads up though

The handles on those looks pretty flimsy to me. Just because they're Made in USA, doesn't guarantee that they're not a POS.

Arise ye olde vise thread! We got new info.

A guy over on the home shop machinist forum just posted this:
http://bbs.homeshopmachinist.net/threads/60313-Beast-of-a-bench-vise-installed

Here's a summary of what the link says and what he told me in a PM:
All USA made including castings
Made by Anchor Industries machine shop in Fitzwilliam NH
Designed and machined by proprietor Ralph Niemela
Castings made by a NY foundry which burned down including the molds
Sold via GSA contract to Federal Government

Various models including:
"Anchor" No. 110 6" bench vise with pipe jaws weighs in at 175 pounds (80 kg) and opens to over 8". It has over 6" of depth from the top of the jaws
It has thrust bearings on the fixed end of the screw, the handle is 1" rod with the 1-1/2" ends double pinned on. The screw is 1-¼-7 Acme"
No 1945: 6" machinist vise without pipe jaws
No ???: 4" vise

The machine shop is closing and everything is for sale including a barrel full of vise castings. http://boston.craigslist.org/gbs/tls/3987487870.html

I sent an e-mail hoping to get more info on the vises, but haven't heard back.

Epstein Tools in Kansas City also has the Anchor tri-stand yoke vise for 1/8”-2-1/2” pipe.
They hot the vises when they bought a bunch of military surplus.
