Doesn't make any difference. There is such a scrambling for good vises on craigslist now, that if it says posted 5 minutes ago, there's no use calling. It's already sold. A year and a half to two years ago you could wait a week and call and it would still be there and the seller was glad to get the call. It was a buyers market then. And there just isn't any of those good estate sales in my area that you fellows are accustomed to out west. But even a blind hog gets lucky once in a while.

Took a couple weeks but it finally came in... My York 125... It weighs a little over 37 lbs, and has 5" wide jaws (125mm)...

It's interesting when you compare the design to a Wilton. Instead of the slide having a key, they reversed it and put a pair of keys inside, while the slide has a machined groove. I'll post more pics after I get it all apart and clean.

It's lighter than I was expecting, but it still feels very solid. The jaws themselves after cleaning off the gunk there is no wear on the serrations!

funny story how i acquired the wilton, i was on my way to pick up the craftsman vise from a CL find..it was about 30min drive. on my way my old man calls see what i've been up to told him i am on my way to pick up a vise, he says ooooh dont go spending your money on a vise i have an old vise i dont use in the shed, i ask what kind it is, he replies i dont know some old vise i never used. well we walk in the shed he starts digging around and pulls out that beauty, of course i tell him what he has and he doesnt care he said he never used it he cant remember but someone had given it to him, he is a GM brat worked at the tech center and had a sweet *** snap on triple bay box filled with all snap on tools (provided by GM) and got to bring it home when he retired. not to mention all his Sata jets, 2 3000s and 2 4000 all with digital read out gauges in the handles. but here is the wilton and craftsman. plan on doing a full restore..does anyone know if i can get a replacement tag for the front. this one is a bit beat up..if not oh well. seeing how smooth this wilton is i am hooked and am on the look out for some more :D

Yep, it's pretty round. All the pics I've seen they leave them unpainted. I don't know if they were chromed originally or what. Not sure if I'll have time this weekend to disassemble it or not.

I wish that there was a scrambling for good vises. From what I've found, it seems that the premium vises (Parker, Athol, American Scale) are under valued, which is good for the buyer. I've made my best margins with home owners and mechanics vises.

Mark, me and you need to trade places. Everyone in my region thinks anything over 20 years is gold plated. 80 percent of the vises I have, have been shipped to me from the Mississippi and beyond. But if you are going to get what you want, you have to do what you have to do. I always know what I'm looking for and if shipping is not a bear I go for it. Sometimes it's a deal breaker. Seems like people around here will mortgage their house just before an estate sale, and then pay more than retail for stuff. They get in a buying mode or a buying trance or something.

Here's a little vise that came from Iowa recently. A little Grand. 24 lbs. 2 ounces, 3 1/2'' jaws, spring loaded quick release trigger. Not sure if it is kin to Grand Piano or not, but don't really think so.

Notice what looks like a half of a Acme nut up front. When you pull the trigger, the half nut drops down and the slide flies completely open like the carriage on a old typewriter. You really have to catch it, it flies open so fast.

Please ship those people to me, here in S.W. Indiana. I have a garage packed full of vintage tools that I would gladly trade for some home mortgages. ;)

I just saw on my local CL someone is listing a VERY rough Columbian 206 for $1,300....

Everyone thinks any vise is gold down here... Even the Chinese vises... It's crazy...

Are you using flash, (Fill flash if needed) and if no flash, is the camera steady?

I think that is my problem Outlaw. I'm using flash but I don't think it has filter. So depending on the angle I get clear and blur. Cheap camera. I've got a bran new one, has everything on it, instructions tell you everything you need to know, I don't understand a word of it. Got it so I could do thumbnails. You may never see them.

It was finally my turn to visit Mark and check out the Golden pile. Here is the first of six that I purchased. It is a Prentiss # 58 with 8-1/2 jaws that needs rescued. The previous owner used this vise without one jaw and it looks like for several years.

I have a project ahead of me in trying my luck at first machining a new channel that matches the moveable jaw. Then I will try my luck on building the 8-1/2 jaws. I built a holder for holding my double angle cutter to machine the serrations for Wilton's 8" jaws, I hope I can squeeze out another 1/2", the holder is weak because of it's length.

Another issue is a crack in it's slide at the end. I've see this issue several times and can only relate it to what we mold makers call a knit line, in plastics when a mold is filled the material is cooling as it is is still filling. When the plastic meets in the tool it creates a knit line that is invisible but there. A weak section is created and under stress the part will crack. Now I do not know how they filled the casting and would stand to be corrected but when I see cracks in the same place over and over again I can only assume this issue. I am going to research the best possible rod type to use and am open to suggestions. My background in welding is Tool Room maintenance, using a TIG welder and welding all sorts of tool steel, aluminum, mold welding and welding alloys like Inconel, Hastoly X etc. I am familiar with the Eutectic rods whether arc or TIG.

I can not wait to start on this project but it will be a winter project since my jaw site is overwhelming me with new jaws you guys keep sending me. I am not complaining and really enjoy making them.

I will post pictures as I get time on my growing collection. OH, Mark gave me a deal at $100.0, I was happy to give it to him.

Kevin

WOW, That's the first picture of a Heavy Chipping Vise I've seen that is in someone's possession and not a 100yr old picture! :willy_nil YOU ****!

For some reason that defect is very common in those old Prentiss'. I always figured it had to be the way the part was cast too. I've seen some filled up with weld and ground smooth. Don't know how they did it though.

Saw this 4" Jet on eBay... You can see on the tag it says "Japan"... Before I think it was mentioned these could possibly be Morgan's? Figured they were worth adding to the thread for archival purposes....

And one more, here's a Columbian that looks like it has been beat to death. Look at how the metal is deformed and fanned over the edge! Not surprising they broke the end of the slide on the dynamic. But seriously a chi-com vise today would have cracked in half a LONG time ago... That's some malleable iron!

I finally had time to get this loosened up. It is a DC cummings post vise with a movable lower screw that you turn with your foot. I have never seen another for sale or otheerwise. It is very odd and the pinnacle of post vises. It is made so that you could clamp anything in a parallel manor instead of wedging it like a normal post vise. I know Fisher made a similar one that used a roller chain to move the bottom slide. The nut has a unique feature in that it has a rocker built in so that it is always aligned with the screw. The front had a similar rocker that the screw pushed against but must have been lost. Will get better photos of this.
It has 8" jaws and weighs in at 283#. Even has a small anvil on the back that was well used. I have included a Steel City post vise that is 8" and 203# for comparison. It came from a barn on the Winston Salem tobacco property.
I thank my friend for helping me get this monster. Also that is a size 13 shoe in the last photo.

Another possibility: don't just "Stab" the shutter release. depress until you get the green light that says "i'm Focused" and THEN fully depress the shutter release.

Kevin, that ole 58 could not be in better hands. If anyone can rescue and restore, its you. If anyone can bring it back to life, you are that man!

Demo, that Cummings is awesome! Just like your whole collection is.
