Not tonight.

I'm going to go look at it tomorrow.

I don't think it is one of the more "premium" brands. The casters look a bit small, lock placement is odd. You can see that there may be a badge painted over or possibly missing, in that rectangular depression on the left hand side of the top drawer. :dunno: Can you post a larger version of the door open picture?

Is it an old Remline or a Montgomery Wards ?

That is what I was kinda thinking or one of the rem/pro boxes, but the handles look a bit off. :headscrat:

Just picked up an old Craftsman on a craigslist deal. I bet I paid too much for it $110 but I really liked it and think it is going to make a great welding cart. I tried to get the date code from behind the label but there was too much over-spray from when the drawers had been repainted. The outside crinkle still looks good though. Need a little clean up and to re-wax the slides but overall in good shape.

I like the old boxes like that. Wish I could find a few for under my benches. It looks like it's in great shape.

Nice box, I'm digging the two tone inner / outer color. IIRC those boxes are date stamped behind the badge on the drawer. Look on the inside and you might be able to see it. :headscrat:

Hunted these down on craigslist, the Stanley Vidmar is 27 years old and the Lyon is 23. They are very tough toolboxes.

The 2 tone is one of the big pluses to me too. I looked behind the badge but too much over-spray from painting the drawers red (PO). Will have to do a little sanding to find it.

Seller had a picture of his grandfather with the box back in the 60's. He had the top for it then too. Story goes he sold the top back in the 70's for $25 dollars stuffed with snap-on tools. I got the bottom today empty for a bit more.

This forum is costing me way too much monies...
I picked this up today, after seeing a very similar one here. I'm thinking either silver hammertone with pinstripes, in martini colors, or just the pinstripes and some clear. There will probably be a pinup ******* there somewhere.

I stripped all the old paint off to get bare metal. And kill some rust wile I was at it.

I picked a slightly newer version of that box a couple months ago. Yours looks in very good shape for the age.

You didn't pay too much if you really like it. Like I always say can you buy that quality a box new these days for that kind of money?

Very nice pick-up

dang man. those look like they'de survive a nuclear winter.
nice score.
Thanks, when I worked in parts departments at car dealerships we had aisles and aisles of Stanley Vidmars stuffed full of parts. We had some drawers loaded up with over 200lbs of parts , they never let out a whimper. I knew someday I'd find some and use them for toolboxes.

Thanks. The seller thought it was from the '46-'47 range as he remembered it from his grandpa's shop in the 1950's. I thought they wouldn't have made that kind of stuff due to rations during the war years. Does anyone know date ranges when they made those craftsman boxes?

Your right about comparative prices too. I have been looking since the summer and haven't found anything close for the money, especially new.

Short answer - Not a chance.

Longer -
The Craftsman was built sometime when Elvis was being banned from TV. I'm guessing that the red/orange and black one was built sometime around when the Beatles were having their meltdown.

The Craftsman is a tank compared to the other one, but they're both decent boxes by today's standards. The mystery box less so. Still, I wouldn't mind having either of them in my shop if I could find one.

Not if you're happy with it. That's what really matters. And like someone else said, where are you going to find something of that quality for that price new?

No prob  It's a cool logo, it reminds me of the Looney Tunes logo.

That was the exact logo. As much as I liked it, I'm probably going to pop all the rivets off, and clean everything again as it looks like there was water in it for a long time. The original finish was trashed, I might try to find a reproduction sticker later. Some silver hammertone will replace the finish anyway. I'm also open to ideas haha.

Brandy,
you have the potential there to have a box that will be hard to outgrow. nice find with the middle and side boxes. also looks like you are new to GJ so welcome to the group.

show us this box cleaned up and with some of your tools in it when you get ready or if you are doing a complete restoration start a thread because that is an interesting set up you have there and I for one would be watching your progress.

Heck I would pay that much for a box that nice any day! Hard to find those late 40's -50's boxes in decent shape.

Here are my newly acquired boxes. I traded a car for these, the car was worth scrap to me so I think I did good. Top is a KRA-62A built in 86 and the bottom is a KR-655B built in 88. The last pic is my first tool box. It's an old craftsman project center that I got around 96. On top of it is a chest my late step dad had. I remember it from at least 86. It says master mechanic and was sold thru true value stores. One quick question, what should I use to clean the grime and dirt off the snap on pair? Thanks, and I love seeing everyone's classics!

Thanks guys. I was just messing with it a bit. It is growing on me even more. Forgot to mention that it came with two keys as well and still locks. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390012090.366117.jpg
Still can't see the date stamp. ImageUploadedByTapatalk1390012125.648835.jpg

I have two of the slightly older ones with the full front drop down covers... behind the logo on the one cover, it was "Advertising metal display company, Chicago" written on it. Maybe check the back side of the cover?
