The Morgan 40 came out of Lockheed Skunkworks in Palmdale, the 140 came out of the original Lockheed Skunkworks plant in Burbank.

I'll never know the history of mine but I'm 99.99% certain it's not that cool!

You picked up the Morgan in Piedmont ? I think it was for sale about a month ago along with a couple Craftsman's. I could never get the guy to call me back.
It's looking good so far !!

I'm really liking that finish on your vise. What, if any is the coating on it? I have a spare that I'd like to restore with that type of finish.

Me also, I am interested on the finish that is on the handle and swivel hold down screws, I am guessing it is not original. Is it just painted on? It looks very good, but if it is just painted, I would think it would scratch off easily on daily using it.

First decent day up here in the Northeast so I decided to FINALLY finish my early 5" blacksmith vise rebuild. Last fall I couldn't get the pin removed to clean up the action on the non-static jaw, even though I used heat and a hammer, but after repeated applications of penetrating oil over 4 months and a few whacks of a large hammer today I finally achieved release!

I decided just to wire brush and oil this since it will be a working vise for me. I love the old paint (I've got white and red)and now the action is gorgeous and smooth. I hit all the metal to metal areas with anti-seize, some is still evident in the picture, and I will give it a final wire brush and oiling tomorrow.

I have to say that I loved getting this and cleaning it up to make it functional. It is complete with no breaks or cracks and works as well as new.

I picked it up for $75.00 and originally I was just going to resell it but now that it is done I like it a great deal and I have decided to keep it.

Well today was an excellent day for garage sales, even though the one item i wanted was sold 3 days prior, still turned out to be a great day. Check the garage sale thread to see the rest

Found a sale on CL for a woodworker shop clearance. The big tools were too much except for that missing HUGE & NEW Baldor grinder that sold for 100.00 days before:shocking:

The Craftsman vise was on the floor and the pipe jaws were on a wall hook.

The Record 52 1/2 had to be removed from the bench with some tools and a saw but i got it off.

20.00 for both:beer::evil:

Picked up a York 125 at machinery sale today. Handle is pretty bent up and it needs new jaws. But seems good and usable. I prefer wiltons but this isnt bad. Check out how lopsided the jaws are in the second photo, wow

Just got these in today.

Metro----4 inch jaws----41.2 lbs.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Craftsman----3 1/2 inch jaw.----34.6 lbs.

Poached this one out of Big Caddy's back yard.

Hard to read, but says fixed mount does not swivel. Was merely seized up. Has issues, Both handles bent, That's no problem. Craftsman emblem missing, may be a problem.

Just arrived. Not sure I have a use for it, but it's interesting. When it gets in the way, I may sell it. Does anyone besides jewelry makers have a use for these little vises?

Jaws are 1.5" wide. Overall, 4.25" long. Three mount points: two in front, one in back. Sitting next to 3.5" Craftsman / Reed.

Now who doesn't' like a Little Athol once in a while?

Picked this one up today at a drive by yard sale for $5! 2" jaws, and all of 6-1/2 lbs

Marked AM Co. Athol Mass. USA on one side and No. 10 on the other.

Opens 2", and its an old school stud through the bench swivel! I quickly come up with a big brass wing nut from my wing nuts drawer, and a brass lever in 1/2" coarse thread from hr drawer with 1/2" fasteners, so I have a choice on the matter

I'll also need a plate better than that cut washer for under the bench, and I'll replace the double nuts some wonk used to get the screw to retract the jaws on opening with something better (I may go with the spring idea Parker used on the 0000 vise I just sent off to keep it working and zero the backlash...)

I suspect the screw is a replacement for something that was broken, and certainly the handle is not factory, but everything else says this was lightly used.

Been keeping an eye on one of these types of vice, (it's very similar to the one in the post linked below, but without a swivel base), and wondering if it's worth getting or not.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=606225&postcount=45

Can't quite make up my mind. It has the unusual factor, and it's quite nice looking too, but I'm undecided, so any opinions welcome. :D 4" jaws.

I personally like the good quality small vices. They're small enough that you can put them everywhere where a third hand might be useful on occasion, without them getting in the way as a larger vice would. I believe zkling has one the same as that.

That could be an intentional design thing? Some vices do have that feature, to allow for extra clearance. The Record 75 posted earlier in the thread is one example.

I think your right, after looking at other pictures of them they're all seem that way. Thanks for the info!

Long time reader and first time poster.

Welcome McBrownie, looks like you will fit just fine here. Great vises.

Morgan 40 with factory paint:

Did a little gov't work tonight while it was slow and got her cleaned up

I think that looks good as is personally. Maybe just do the letters?

The front of the screw on those craftsman's really had style with the grooves and all.

That's really cool Outlaw, non exposed screw <2" vises are really neat IMHO. Compared to the super common exposed screw and 2 slide rod design. :puke:

That is neat thundermug. Do you think it was a clamp on that got removed or always screw mount only design? I'm not sure whom all would actually use one, they are kinda delicate. I've used mine numerous times to hold wires for soldering but that is about it. Eventually it will probably end up on my desk as a business card holder, which was what I intended when I bought it.

What about keeping your eye out for a winged c-clamp that's bent out of shape. You could remove the wings off one with a 1/2"dia. and put them on your threaded rod.

As far as poaching in Big's back yard, I'd be careful, if I was you...:evil::evil:

I believe you've found a Craftsman 5182...it replaced the 5195 which is a good bit heavier, at 51 pounds...

The 5195 is the little brother of the "Ever Elusive" 5198...:drool:

The 5182 is a nice vise...

Those wings on clamps are not threaded; the wing nut has to be threaded for the stud.

And I've already found two solutions for it from my fastener collections. A Bronze wing-nut (after cleaning it I found it was not straight yellow brass), and a threaded lever from something or other.

That little Baugh & Moss vice has been painted, (guess what colour :D), and now just needs a couple of new pins making up to hold the screw and shaft in place. Not going to use that bolt and screw which were in there before. They looked a bit cheesy, IMHO. Handle now slides rather than being locked solid with rust and old grease too.

Succumbed to temptation with that Soderfors too. It just had enough of an unusual, quirky look about it to warrant a place in the collection. :D Should have that some time next week, hopefully. Just hope the seller makes a better job of packing than the last one did. This is it:

That existing paint job will be going.
