I like the silver and small bullets and the one with a machine crank type wheel for the handle. Do you have a name or catalog scan of that one? I'm curious as to how they advertised that feature. :headscrat:

zoomie, What is the one with the wheel on it ? It is cool looking and rotates too. I am glad I don't collect anvils, that a very expensive habit

I was looking at some old ads I have, nothing matches that wheel one, but some resemblances in the old Samson and others.

I found the post, it was from Bl00, he had a catalog page from 1899...
Thanks Bl00!

Mav: I have to say you didn't pay to much for that one. i saw you disclose your payment on the garage sale thread and you could have spent 5 or 10 times that much and still done ok. that is not a very common vise. does it really only have a 2 inch wide jaw? nice find

Merbie: if you want a new vise maybe a Leinen or Bison vice since you are in UK or if you happen upon an older Record especially with the quick release mechanism it would serve you well. size of the vice depends on needs, but our theory on the vise thread is always bigger is probably better. also if you do end up getting a large vice (vise) make sure to bolt the bench to the wall studs if it isn't a very heavy bench. new Records are imported from China and owned by Irwin tools now so not quite the same quality as 20 years ago when they were made in England.

Zoomie: any pictures of the museum are appreciated if you are able, but thanks for just sharing the new additions if that's all you have time to post for now. I agree with VA that the GPS's probably all lead to your place down where you live. nice work and keep it up if you are able. I found a reasonable way to ship pallets of vises if you want to lighten your load or make some trades.

Thanks! And let it be recorded that I paid what they asked for it :3gears:

Just measured, 2.5" wide jaws.

Any English made vises still commercially available?

What happened to the Bugatti Vice on the shelving unit???

If repairing that one is not going to happen, an 8" Swindens would be a good, available, made in the U.K. clamper...Probably not inexpensive, though...

Not inexpensive may be a bit of an understatement. Probably a case of drop your trousers and grab your ankles. :D Swindens is about the only manufacturer still going over here that I can think of offhand though. All of the others are long gone. Second hand would be a far better proposition, whether that be from online sites or s/h machinery/tool dealers..

Dutch: awesome looking Record. very old school design. i'm not sure i'd replace or even remove those jaws because they have a nice clean edge on top still and new ones are hard to match that. what i might do is clean it up, re grease and maybe get a new set of copper or brass jaws that can be placed on top of the old jaws if you need a little extra grip. then removed if you like looking at your vise without the jaw covers on. your vise and your call and just my 2 cents.

ALL: anybody seen one of these little vises before? i haven't done too much research yet and may not, but curious if anybody else has a 4 Standard 716E vise? or who might have manufactured it? it is in fairly decent shape and just missing a swivel pin, but he main screw sticks out beyond the slide about an inch so wondering if my 88 year old seller might have changed that in the last 70 or so years?

DIF,

I just had quadruple bypass 9/24, so I can't move much around to get a good family photo right now, but maybe I'll try to take a few 'group shots" that will suffice...

I'm really only looking for ""flat nose", "screw in replacable jaw", "swivel base" REED's" and "odd", "strange" "tiny" or "multi-swivel" stuff right now...

But I'm alway open to a trade! I'd rather "lose" on a trade that makes both party's happy than buy and sell my vises...

I guess I'd rather over trade to get what I want and have someone get what they want. Probably not fiscally responsible, but it's my hobby and I enjoy it...

Thank you DIF!
Take care!

Zoomie: well said and i hope you make a speedy recovery. take pictures as you can or want and i'm sure we will all appreciate any glimpse we can get of the museum.

i'll send you a PM. Blacksmith, vises, surface plates, steel plate all sounds good to me too.

The jaws do need a bit of work, someone has hammered on them a bit and the meeting faces have deformed such that only about a third of their surfaces meet, some filing will be needed at least, but I will probably get the rest of it cleaned up first. Its now in the garage oiled up as the slides were very dry.
I have another vice to work on over the winter, a big 6" one which its owner saw fit to leave out on a scrap pile for 8 years, its been submerged in oil for 3 months in the hope it will unstick.

Dutch: vinegar works very well to unstick a vise, but make sure to wipe all the vinegar off or don't leave it in the bucket too long or you have a science project. i had a Prentiss swivel jaw that had a big weld on it so thought i'd try the vinegar and it worked great after i left in the vinegar for about a month. then i put it back in the bucket to loosen the handle, set something in front of the bucket and now i have a science project. Diesel works too i hear, but vinegar doesn't smell as bad and easier to dispose of.

Hope you are feeling better... Were you the person that bought that Reed 1C?

http://www.ebay.com/itm/221573274785

It had replaceable jaws, flat nose, etc...

I'm gaining on it, I hope you are well, thank you.

No, I've got all the "C's", I got my 1C from a trade with Nick (Autopts) probably close to a year ago. Or I would have bought that one!

Take care Jason!

I'd like to add that a 50/50 mix of transmission fluid and acetone is what I normally use to free up seized arn.

No, that's the same one, I had it upstairs to see if a buddy could figure it out. Still no clue what it is for... Any guesses?

Thanks!

Ok, so this is my first post here. Been lurking a bit, seem to have a good bunch of guys here. About two years ago, I began looking for a vintage Wilton bullet style vise. I told my father to be on the lookout for me, since he is retired and spends every chance he gets at flea markets and garage sales. I was sure he'd come across one eventually. Well anyway fast forward 2 yrs, still no vise. I decided to take matters into my own hands, and a couple of months ago I began to actively look for one on Craigslist. Missed a few, I guess there must be alot of collectors out there. So finally I got lucky and picked up a Wilton 350 that was in overall decent shape. It's got a 95 date code on the keyway, which was a surprise to me, since I thought it was much older.

The following week, I was at a garage sale where the guy had a bunch of old tools out, and I manged to pick up another one, a 9300s in decent shape for $10, no date on the keyway, no idea what as to year.

And lastly, a Parker 3x in really good shape, I have no idea what year it is.

Attached are pictures, I am really looking forward to restoring them.

I'm going to take a shot at guessing the age of your Parker. I would say it could have been made in the late 1800s to very early 1900s. It has the ball spindle end like the older ones had and it doesn't have the art decco embellishments like a 1930 vise would have. I can't see the picture clearly but is the spindle retainer missing?

Part II
Panavise 2" ball swivel vise
Parker 3 1/2" model no. 63 1/2
Stanley clamp on wood art deco vise
Stanley 2 1/2" Handyman clamp on
Streamliner 3" "aircraft style" vise
Tesco USA 2 3/4" clamp on vise
Wilton 3 1/2" Shop King vise missing the swivel base but has the pipe jaws
Wilton 4" Torco vise with a missing foot on the swivel.
Yost 4" swivel vise no model number

The Reed's, my workhorse favorites.
203 machinist 3", missing the swivel base
1C combination 3 1/2" vise, needs to be mounted on a movable stand
206 machinist 6" vise, my personal monster vise. Since it has NO markings and is painted black I call it the stealth vise.

The Wilton bullets
No. 4 swivel 5" 1946 date code project vise. That's not a misprint on my part, it is a No. 4 with 5" jaws!
9500 swivel 5" jaws 1954 date code vise. Needs a clean up and repaint but is in very good physical condtion.
9600 swivel 6" jaws monster project vise. The dynamic jaw is stuck in the main body but I worked on it for the first time in years yesterday and after bead blasting the visible slide area where it goes into the main body and on the back side I stood it up vertical and sprayed PB blaster into the space around the slide. This afternoon there was a ring of oil seeping through to the floor so there is hope!

Thanks for the information. The retainer is there. It's older than I thought! Weighs about 75lbs +/-
The same seller had a Rock Island vise just as large, but it had a lot of repairs on it, some major, that were really poorly done.

I do not think your vise is a miniature or salesman's sample.
A couple of years ago I was at the Carnegie in Pittsburgh looking for info on Rees jacks. I recall seeing an add for Pittsburg vises that stated something in the vein "a vise for every need" or "a vise sized for every need".

When I saw your post, I started looking for some evidence to support my recollection. Not having a day to invest into another trip to the Carnegie, I have been searching the Internet to see if I could find something.

Finally success. Check this out this ad from Hardware Dealers' Magazine, Volume 28.

Good to hear of your recovery. My dog keeps me moving - the best thing to keep one fit.

BTW - I love to horse trade...

Zoomie, good to hear the operation went well and you are feeling better. Here's to many successful vise hunt's in the future, cheers

Thank you!

You guy's at the GJ, mostly "The Vise Thread" entertained me the whole time (a week and a half) I was in the hospital, thank you!

BTW, did you see the ad I posted about the "bicycle vise"?
I had to borrow it from Bl00.

Take care!

I hope this isn't inappropriate, but if you didn't see CBRAX's Wilton 600S on eBay, you should check it out. I've seen it live, its very good work, better than new, IMO.
