Going up Dessau Road the other day in Austin, I saw this flatbed Dodge, and he had a vise mounted on his truck - carefully wrapped in a black trash bag and secured with bungee cords... I thought to myself at the time, that's got to be a Garage Journal member!

Zx: until the owner and maybe member shows up shall we take a shot at guessing what the vise is. i'm guessing a 6 inch Wilton tradesman. color and shape is all i'm working off of.

That's what I thought when I saw it; unfortunately I snapped that picture with my phone going down the road at 45 mph so it's kind of fuzzy.

Thank goodness the guy is at least trying to protect it.

I see far too many of those truck and bumper mounted vises just rusting away.

Sometimes I want to just cover them myself.

I see tons of service trucks with Wiltons bolted to the rear bumper. I wonder how many of these get stolen??

No,, the owner did not cover that vise.... The local Police Department covered it after the thirteenth time that Dodge was found in the center of a traffic jam caused by GJ vise gawkers...

While I don't condone illegal behavior, I did catch myself wondering how those things are bolted to the back of a truck I saw in traffic yesterday! And what a shame it would be if it fell off

one of my clients got his Wilton C1 stolen a couple years ago and asked me if i would sell him my 1945 version that was just restored. here's where that C1 resides still to this day. while i wouldn't do that with an awesome (and expensive) vise like that he uses his almost daily so to each their own.

I have another picture of a utility truck with a 6 or 8 inch tradesman on one side of the back bumper and a pipe vise on the other side, but i can't seem to find it now.

The Wilton's have the problem of you can just take out off the swivel bolts and lift the vise off of the base since there is no center bolt. I would prefer a Reed 1C or 2C since they have a center bolt and after bolting the swivel to the truck I would weld the bolts so they would have to grind it off.

Bricen: thanks for the compliment but all i did is buy a fully restored Wilton C1.my client has the cool mounting pipe trailer hitch type mount on his truck and he needed a nice vise so a few Benjamins later he had my C1 mounted to his truck where he used to have a similar vise before a scumbag stole it. those Wilton C series vises are some of the best vises they make especially the older ones that have the character marks in the cast and from a prior user.
