thursday - They're "Record" brand jaw covers and they appear to be made of a hard fibre like material, similar to brake linings but not nearly as hard. I got them at Acklands-Grainger for about $30. They have them for various Record vices in the 4" to 8" range. I imagine they would fit other vices too.

Well, with those round tuits Outlaw and VA gave me last week, I managed to finish up a couple vises I've had apart for a while. Not the quick slide swivel jaw Athol, that one will require more thought, effort and time. Here's a Dunlap 5244, one of 2 I have. Very nice light duty vises, I was very impressed with the quality of the castings. Painted it AMR, seemed like that's what it was originally.

Next up is a Sterling 31, 4" swivel base vise. I got this from member trdtaco, pic of it here as found http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?p=3645210&highlight=Sterling#post3645210 We traded as he wanted a 70's style Craftsman and didn't care for the cast in place jaw inserts on the Stering, and I was happy to get the more vintage Sterling. Looks like it may have hand checkering on the cast in place steel jaw inserts. Anybody know anything more about Sterling? A search on here only turns up this one, seems somewhat obscure. This one is painted Pittsburgh Paints Vista Green semi gloss. Picked up a few cans at a swap meet for next to nothing, real happy with it, has the fancy spray tip on the can, covers very well, and dries fast, even though it was only 40 deg in the shop. Strange how the color looks different in the pics, it is actually lighter like the last pic. Noticed it is also almost a perfect match for what looks like the OEM paint on my late model Prentiss swivel jaw, swivel base that I posted here back in May, so will be using it on that too.

Can you take a picture of the bottom of the swivel base? I have an Emmert that looks identical to that IIRC. Same screw eye and large lock down handle. I wonder if they were from the same factory?

Sure, no problem, I'll grab a pic tomorrow. One thing I can say is the center pivot bolt is different than most, it's just a threaded pin with a screwdriver slot, no shoulder to retain the base to the vise if the lock down were removed.

Sounds right. I've never found much on the emmert tigers. It seems well built but does have a few features that make it stand out from most other makes.

That Parker in the add has been run hard and fast, and put away wet. Parts vise (not many) or beater.

the Reed might be better but not enough pics. The Littelstown is over priced.

I searched around and Hobby Machinist has quite a few threads on the matter. Apparently Rustoleum brand paint onto bare metal lasts while under pressure, so I'll try that method. See if I can get 3-4 gallons mixed up and I'll paint the whole mill in a color we use fairly often. Very close match to Cummins Diesel beige.

Also, enjoy pictures of what a new "Heavy Duty 6" Machinist's Vice" by RIGID looks like. 5/16" thick ears to bolt down to the table. Company paid $599 for this when the jaw broke off our 10" of unknown age/origin.

That's a surprising about that Ridgid vise. :shocking:

Hey, 454ragtop, I've always liked the style of those old Dunlaps with the art deco/racing stripe castings. Nice job bringing out that detail with a little black paint!

Finished several Wiltons tonight. The Cadet's Dynamic jaw support has .025 clearance in the key-way slot to the key-way. Makes for a sloppy side to side vise. It i fixable but i wish I caught it earlier. The two 2-1/2 #825/925 vises are a great size for roll around mechanics toolboxes. All the machine repairmen at IBM had one on their tool boxes. The #3 built in 1941 is the tightest of them all but the two 2-1/2's and especially the 3" vises jaw shelf did not match up very good, had to custom fit the jaw tops on all three. The Cadet matched up pretty good.

Spoke to Lou who owns all these Parkers tonight. What a talented guy. Inventor, gun engraver and artist. Here's some of his work.

Bad news, he wants to sell the collection intact. His biggest vise is a Parker 101. He has number of 20s and even an 18 and 19. His littlest Parker is the one that finished his collection and the rarest of them all. He said it was a commemorative vise made for the founder of Parker at a great milestone in the company's history.

The pics are of some of his gunwork, his shop, his desk, his littlest parker. I'm hoping to see him next week for some other items. I'll try to get more pics

I will not argue with Lou, he knows more about small Parkers than I ever will. Really cool stuff.

Oh. and the there is the "collar"...

Possibly salvageable as parts: Swivel base and lock the wrench, the main screw and the main nut...

Even if you could get the weld off cleanly, the static jaw is missing a hunk.

The Indy add mentions 2 vises but he has pictures of at least 4.
I saw 3 swivel base and one non.

Well of course I went on a vise run, weather (and frostbite) be damned!

Here's a few pics of the 5196. Needs a handle and some work on the jaw. This thing is HEAVY. Too cold to do much work on it now.

If you haven't figured it out the lady selling the 5196 called me up saying the buyer never showed up and to came get it so I did! He had came to look at it and the workbench it was mounted on, was supposed to come back the next day, she never heard from him again!

Jwitt: nice Rock Island vise looks like it just needs a little spiffing up.
Ex: welcome to GJ and now that you have a very nice Parker vise are you done or do you already have more and that one was just your first post?
BB: in case you don’t want to use that awesome handle your 5196 came with then making a new handle the size of original one is 10.5 inches long. Is gas really only $1.75 in Lousianna? Our road taxes must be higher here on gas because even cheapest is still $2.25 or maybe we have too many electric cars that don’t pay their fair share.
**: interesting looking mill vise. I like it and if it has vise in the description I’m sure it’s ok to post it here. We also like vices, but we can’t post all of those that are not made of steel.
KZ: I hope you didn’t pay much for that vice and I’ll be curious if you are able to save it.
Jim: both those vises you just posted are worthy of a stump and here’s one I’m thinking of making for an anvil if you might need a design to follow. Very nice work.
AAT: your Parker looks pretty nice. I hope that is shavings and not a weld on the dynamic under the jaws and if so you have a keeper.
KM: what can I say? You probably also need to build yourself a stump like this. Very nice work as usual.
ALL: sorry if I missed somebody, but I need to head to work and it’s been a few days since I posted. McB you can post your sweet Parker once a month and I’m sure I still would like looking at that amazing work you and KM did to bring that from the dead.
This wood anvil stand i'm going to try to build one like it might not be a "stump" or a machine gun turret, but i think it has it's cool factor.
