6" Chas Parker no. 66 vise. Huge.

I was out and about today and came across this vise and had to have it. It does have a few issues. It will need a new handle and one jaw insert will need to be replaced, and the vise does have a chip missing. The jaws are 6" and opens and closes tight and jaws meet up great when closed. My back tells me it weighs about 130lbs or so, its a big one. What is the hole down the center of the back for?
Has anyone ever seen this vise? I cant find anything on it.

Marty: that is one cool old vise and you might want to post up a few pictures of it on the main vise thread. i don't care how much or little you paid for it and i just want more pictures if you have time. i don't see the jaw issues you mentioned and sorry to see the little chip.

i also just posted a picture of a cool stump i'm going to try and duplicate when i find the block of wood to use. your new 150 year old Parker might look great on an old stump.

CK: your big Parker was a good buy even with a little piece of the dynamic missing. are you going to spiff it up or just mount, grease and use it?

Marty: can you take and post a few pictures of the bottom of your old Parker? from B100's catalog page it looks like it was made with a single bolt down through the bottom of the bench so maybe you are missing that part.

Drivesit I'm going to make it all mine. I have an idea for a vise stand out of a old news paper stand I acquired in my younger days!

Drives, I will go out in a bit and see if it has a bolt hole down the center.
Coyotekyle, I should be able to post a few more pictures later.

There is no through hole for a bolt on the bottom and here is a picture of the cracked jaw insert. I will be going to corporate headquarters for work in a few weeks where they manufacture all the machines we use on site. They do a lot of mill work with steel and will ask one of the guys if he can copy the good jaw.

Marty, that Dome topped "T" slot is probably for two or three carriage bolts through a bench to anchor it.

Nice find!

If you go back and look at bl00's picture, it looks to me that only one carriage bolt is used to hold it to the bench.

If you loosen the bolt, not only can you swivel the vise, but you can pull it out past the edge of the bench, or push the vise back further onto the bench as well. Then tighten it back down so you can work. :dunno:
