hey guys, is there a side cab/locker thread? I gave it a search but couldn't find much. I want to add some at some point and id love to see pics/reviews of different stuff.
Id like to throw a side cab on my box and bolt a vise to it. Im thinking with it just hanging off the rail, would the abuse of vise work on it be too much? Maybe need some casters on it to support it along with bottom bolts.

Id love to hear that the HF side cab can handle it, but can understand it would be a lot for it.
Def like the idea of the HF locker i saw them in person and was impressed for the amount of $$$

Love to see some pics of what ya all got hangin around, and advice. If this topic is already beat to death, would appreciate a link
:)

Oddly enough I was also looking for a similar thread. Today I bought a snap on tool box, and it had 2 side cabinets, one is vintage, and the other one is newer. I wanted to find out more information on them and pricing.

I have mixed feelings on side boxes. I find them more useful as stand alone narrow boxes to stick where even the smallest (26" wide) full size box won't fit. Throw on 4 casters and you're set. I've got 4 and only one is hanging on the side of a main box at the moment and even that is temporary till I get the time and ambition to unload, flip and throw casters on the bottom. It's a heavy SOB.

Putting a vise on any tool box with wheels for moderate to heavy work isn't a grand idea IMHO. Especially a side cabinet or side shelf. Cantilever load and all.

The HF side box, like the 44" bottom, is a great bang for the buck. Much better built than most common, even pro grade, side boxes in that size range.

I'm curious what boxes did you get?

I have the HF side cab mounted to my 44 setup, works well enough and I've never put a vise on it but have set my small drill press on top of it before. It's just as solid as the 44" boxes and I'm happy with it. It also uses a barrel lock V the regular key locks on the 44" models.

Searching, didn't come across much but this thread. I'm gonna put the HF 7 drawer side (as pictured above) on a 54" KRL. Blasphemy? Good! Anyone else done it? I have not yet checked the fit.

I use a HF side box I bought on sale.

I bought it to go with a SO KR-5x7 set.

Not pictured, but included with the above for $750 (in 2010), found on CL. [plus a SO fold-away tray]

The HF is not the same quality, fit, or finish. It is a good value when on sale for a home shop. I don't know how it would hold up to everyday production shop use.

Really you don't think the HF side box is much better built than the little KR274, 3 drawer side box? I think the HF is a much better built side box and can't be touched by many of the common older side boxes. JMHO

:headscrat: why not support your statements? I've had a number of those 274's and personally find them to be lacking in torsional rigidity along the vertical axis compared to the HF box. Now the 8 drawer version, kr288 is much more rigid due to the full height inner panel to support the extra drawers.

The side cabinet fits on my KRL very nicely. I have to re-drill the lower holes, still way less fab than I thought I might have to do. Pics tomorrow, ran out of time today.

I did have a side cabinet with a vice on top used a piece of 3/4 marine plywood between vice and box . Also put a bolt thrue side cabinet into main box used the hole the handle would attach too.as it was there and already threaded.itwas a 4 inch vise but made life easy working on air brake fittings

I put a small vice (and hf sidebox) on my cart. It works great for its intended purpose, which is quick simple things without the need to walk to the workbench. Just my opinion, but I would prefer my main vice to be mounted to a solid bench and not my toolbox if you're going to be hammering, cutting, welding on it. If your intentions are just light duty use, then it will be fine on the side box.

Matt, will you post a larger picture of that, looks like a handy setup. What cart/stand is that?

Ok, HF side cabinet installed. Almost plug 'n play, I really just needed to re-drill one of the lower holes. Fits nicely in terms of height.

Obviously depth is different (duh). I was gonna put it at the front but it felt like it ate up precious space; there's a man door to the left in the pic and I cut that corner a lot. I really like it back how it is.

I'm definitely not painting it, I find amusing irony in the red HF box attached to a KRL. I can only hope to offend a tool box snob someday who comes into my shop, but not many GJ members around me so that's not likely to happen

Here's two HF side boxes on the HF 26" stack. A link to the build is in my signature.

As I was positioning the side cab on a mover's dolly today I looked at it from across the shop and thought hell, you could just about get away with that for a small "rolling" cabinet LOL. From a distance it really just looked like the casters belonged to the cabinet.

I wanted a side locker, so I got a Stanley Vidmar locker (used). Regular toolbox is a KRL. Ordered 2 keys from vidmar, works great and there won't be a debate about it not being solid. Too tall for a vise, but I wouldn't want a vise on my toolbox anyways. I'll post a pic tomorrow.

I really want one of these to mount on my HF44, I might even mount one on each side. All I need is a coupon for them, which is almost as rare as a unicorn.

I think the lowest I've ever seen the side box was $179.99 IIRC :headscrat:

I have a small vise mounted to my HF side box. It's only for light work at the box to save some steps though. I wouldn't use it for suspension work or something.

Recently picked up a KRL1001 that the PO mounted a Waterloo Magnum side cabinet to. The side cabinet is interesting in that it has a door covering 4 slide out trays/drawers that can be configured at any height desired, super HD, seems like it would be pretty handy. Unfortunately I have to remove it, don't really have room for it.
