AND NOW FOR SOMETHING COMPLETELY DIFFERENT!

I went back to the flea market but the No 40 was gone. Fortunately they had this Hollands 23 1/2 for the same price.

There's a blob of black wax on this vise too. Is there some machinist's midnight ceremony that involves secret handshakes and black candles?

ARGGGHHHH. I just saw a Hollands 24 for the same price in Sylvania, Ohio. Here's the link for anyone interested. https://toledo.craigslist.org/tls/5221219607.html

CRS, I like the Hollands and the one you picked up was a steal for $50. Here is one I fixed up a year ago. I resurfaced the jaws on my surface grinder. I am a fan of the Hollands. Nice score.

Do not mess with a Machinist, they always get even.

Bagged swagelok are the best double ferrul fittings dk makes them as well but the steel has more porosity and burs. The pictured square body 90 valves were custom order. I use alot of swagelok's

Bagged: I'm not very knowledgeable on these vises, though I keep reading more and more here. I was so happy to see a decent vise at this moving sale I just took it and ran. I didn't even think to look around for the swivel handle.

Those handles are just threaded with a slotted screw on each end. My guess is the handle probably bent or broke right where the threads stopped. ( the weakest point )

Drive,---Sandman's Reed is a 108S.---the 108R use to be the stationary version of the 208R.---But when they changed the logo to the oval/football shape with Reed in the center, they changed the 208R model to 108S, and dropped the weight a few pounds.

B100 has one or had one featured on Dayid's list.

http://scuttle.dayid.org/wiki/index.php/Reed_Vise

But this is just splitting hairs because it is still one big A vise.

Scott That Hollands looks just like a Reed why didn't you mill a shelf and put some of your awesome jaws on it.

Thanks Gazedo
I wanted the Holland smooth, the hardened insert was not in to bad of shape.

Just did what you mentioned to this Athol #79, it had an hard casted in inserts that were ruined, I chopped them out and added a smooth and a serrated set. Just got the jaws back from Heat treat and have not fit them yet. The Athol was good practice, the insert was 52C Rockwell and cut out pretty easy with carbide.

Scott Great work Athols are very cool on my shortlist. Carbide end Mills are pretty hard to stop we use them for 1 in garolite stock at work on the 5 axis router. I need to talk the boss into getting me a mill drill or turret. I over load the taiwan drill press often. Also I would like the access to do more machining.

Decided to wire wheel this one as it had virtually no rust inside. But I think I need to watch the the angle grinder safety video. Luckily only a little chunk of skin missing.

Not going to mirror polish this one. Keeping a brushed look on the anvil.

Hoping to have this one done this weekend.

The Wards vises are pretty neat, I fit some parts on this one. I did not get a picture of the date stamp but with the Acorn Nut on this one it dates the vise as first generation Wilton's in the early 40's.

Nice job Kevin. Looks like I'm going to get to work on that American scale vise you fit for jaws! Can't wait to see your work up close and personal.

Uggh has to be a American Scale. They are the worst vise company to fit jaws to. I hope I don't disappoint you. Every jaw I make for American Scale has the screw holes slotted to find the threaded holes they attempted to accurately place. Did I mention the height of the boss for the channel also vary s a good 1/32. good luck Tops.

The recent acquisition of my 106 had me finishing up this 206. Just a very thorough clean up and repaint, left every tool mark be, no grinding, no filling. Pretty certain it's the 106 that'll stay thoughuploadfromtaptalk1445053771599.jpg

Speaking of Hollands, this one appears to be in pretty good condition. Can anyone give size and weight?

Blue

I have a couple Hollands vises but not that particular model. Those I've seen have a model number that doesn't consistently give an intuitive clue as to the jaw width. For example, my Hollands 52H is neither 5" nor is it 2" wide. It's a 3-1/2" swivel base vise with pipe jaws.

Here's the one link I found showing a 53-1/2 and a mention that it weighs "close to 80 lbs," however the picture you posted will be lighter because there seems to be no base, and there's no indication if the pipe jaws are there.

http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=2575151&postcount=5980

Jaw width should be 4-1/2".

I'm liking fixed base vises more and more like you oldldh. I've decided to sell my 204 since I got a 105 last week. I'm not too keen on swivel base reeds like I thought I was.

The Chicago Wilton I recently sold had no date stamp either.

Hoping to finish up by the weekend

Your going to have to step it up to be like balane with a one day buy to sell turn around time.
Going back to work is killing my basement "vice" time. :lol_hitti

Haha. I'm good with 2-3 day. I also have to finish a Parker before Sunday so I'm trying to button that up right now. My afternoon garage time is non existent today as I have to spend it with my family.

Thanks Top.

As to Reed swivelin vises, I do have a Reed 204R, but think I'd rather have a 105 in its place also :) I set up multiple benches with the hitch receiver. So, not only can I walk around the side of the vise, I get to rotate them as I desire to change.

That later Reed lock down system (swivel) with the indexing teeth is really nice though. I'm guessing you won't find any bent lock down handles on those.

You can't beat a fixed base, IMHO. If you want all round access, mount the vice on a pole stand. :D Swivel bases don't appear to be something which have ever hit the spot over here. Honestly can't think of a single person I know who has a works vice which is on a swivel base. The only vice I can think of which just wouldn't be right without swivelling/rotation is the Ball Base, but that's not exactly a standard vice.

In my years of collecting, honestly can't say as I've ever seen more than a handful of Parkinson swivel bases either. I'm using those as an example with them being an optional, separate accessory with pretty much all bench models rather than a base item with some of their range.

I'm torn on swivel bases. When made properly, they can be very useful. For example I don't have the floor space to keep a vise on a stand, and for a lot of the work I do, it can be nice to be able to set it at a comfortable position that allows good access. They said, the comfortable position seems to be about the same 99 percent of the time, and my rock island pretty well lives swivels about 15 degrees to the left. I wouldn't want to give up the swivel base on my fine work vise, but for everything else I never swivel them...

If I could only have two bench vises in my shop, they would be a 5" fixed base machinists vise, and a 3.5" swivel base swivel jaw, such as my rock island.

I think that pretty much sums it up well. A small swivel vice for fine work, and where you aren't going to be contending with working around the rear of the slide if you turn it around ain't bad at all. For most heavier work though, rigidity is the main thing, and with a vice mounted on or near the corner of a bench, it's rare to need more clearance. I think it's just one of those things which boils down to personal need/requirements more than anything else. My personal preference is definitely towards statics, in general.

This Craftsman sunction-cup hobby vise is "for my wife" and her jewelry making, but I would have bought it even if she couldn't use it. $21 shipped.

Drove 5 miles to get to a local high school garage sale. Their ad said, Tools. I got there in time for the opening and the only tools were a bent screwdriver and a rusty file. Bitterly disappointed, I drove home. Six blocks away from home the sign said, GARAGE & TOOL SALE so I bought this $3 vise. Cheered me right up.

p.s. Will someone else please have a word with Riley about his vise habit? He doesn't seem to want to listen to me anymore.

Picked this Morgan 135 for $40, technically sight unseen. My girlfriend spotted it at an outdoor flea market and asked if I wanted it. For less than $1/lb, absolutely.

Nice score! Are you planning on stripping off that red paint and bringing its appearance up to the level of your Starrett?

BTW, I wonder what that old machinist tool box to the left in the first photo went for?

I'll probably strip the paint off the jaws and the main screw crown (or whatever you call it), it looks sloppy. I might also polish up the swivel lock and handle. But otherwise if the vise is in good shape, I'll probably use as-is.

Who knows though, maybe the mood will hit me and I'll do a full tear down and repaint!
