We love our "fur-face" family members. Our life is enhanced by their presence and by our memory of them.

With respect to you, family, and Doc.

Chris, sorry to hear about the sad news regarding Doc. It seems like he had a great life in your care, especially if he trusted you after being in an abusive environment.

We have had our rescue dog (Doug) for about a year now and I couldn't imagine what it would be like to suddenly loose him. My thoughts and prayers go out to you and your family. If there's anything we can do to help through this forum, please let us know.

JB (jbmath) – I’m done with drywall… until I start working on the garage. Hopefully that will be far enough in the future that I will have forgotten this round. Yes, it always is great to have a chunk of uninterrupted time. I feel like things get done!

How is the Cobra coming along?

Cheers,
Chris

Chris,
First of all I'm so sorry to hear about your friend Doc, I know it is a tough thing to experience.

On a happier note my cobra is progressing, I received the call last week that my axle is ready to be picked up, now I just have to get a free day to make the trip. Woo Hoo.

It is better to love and loss then to never love. The pictures proof that Doc was loved

A side note: I know someone that might have a rodent to give away. Lol.

Best wishes.

Ned,
First let me say I'm so sorry to hear about Doc. They (Dogs) create a warm wonderful place in our hearts, and when they are gone that space is never really filled ever again!

Next let me say, I too am inspired and awed by your skill, attention to detail, and forethought in your shop layout! This thread has been my morning coffee read for almost a week (I had to increase my coffee intake a couple of days!!). I need to build a station soon to incorporate my radial and chop saws, So I will definitely be checking back often!

Yep, things are still a little tight by the sheet goods cart.

I just gotta ask though... couldn't the sheet goods cabinet been rolled out of the way in like 10 seconds?? I still need to build one of these for my shop.

Thanks everyone for the kind words. It has been a few days and the house feels empty not having the energy around that a young Aussie brings. Our other dog has been moping around since the accident so today she is coming to work with me. It will be good for both of us.

Again, thanks to everyone for checking in. I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey everyone,

I just wanted to say thank you again for all the posts about Doc. My wife often asks why I post here. My response is that it is like hanging out with a bunch of the guys on the block having a beer talking about cars, tools, motorcycles, the shop, and just generally shooting the ****. Only difference is that the block covers the globe and I don’t need to tell folks here how great that is. So, thanks.

Shop time, good for the mind and the soul.

Metal Cut-Offs and the old Block Grinder…

Thursday I got a project through final inspection and we got 12+ inches on snow that night so, I took Friday off and went skiing at the local hill in the morning and spent some time in the shop in the afternoon. It was a good day. The snow was excellent and I got to spend time building the cart to house the metal cut-offs and grinder.

In my shop, space is at a premium. This is how my old Block Grinder was sitting with all that unused space below…
IMG_8545-XL.jpg

Here are a few of the cut-offs that needed to find a more organized, permanent home…
IMG_8555-M.jpg

I raided the sheet goods cabinet and built this from some scraps. It is based on the cut-off cart for the hardwood scraps just one compartment shorter and only one bay wide…
IMG_8550-XL.jpg

Mocked up. It should do nicely...
IMG_8556-XL.jpg

There still are some finishing touches like solid wood edge banding, etc. before I prime and paint it. The top shelf that the grinder sits on will be done in spray-on bedliner and the other shelves are getting some outdoor carpet. That may get done this Sunday if time permits.

It was great to spend a little time listening to music and making sawdust, for sure. On that note… The dust collection works great. The power sensing relays are awesome and it made me smile every time I turned on the table saw and the DC kicked on automatically. Also, I'm still impressed with how easy it is to find and pull material from the sheet goods cabinet. It really is a good design and I wish Wood Magazine had a way for me to send the designer a note letting them know how much it kicks ****. It's nice to get to use some of the upgrades, finally. They defiantly make the time in the shop more enjoyable.

Thanks everyone for hanging out, I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Chris

Ok, how do I place an order for the sheet good storage and grinder/cut off stand? And so you don't have have to keep skiing on a beautiful March day, you can deliver them. (still in a cast)

I'll take the base.

Come on down and pick it up! While you are here, I'll put you to work wiring up a few things! :lol_hitti

Oh man... I hope the leg and the thumb are healing up, Shorty. It sounds like there won't be any lasting issues. Skiing and working in the shop was a terrific way to spend the day! If I were closer I'd trade out a few shop storage cabinets for a little universal currency... BEER!

Thanks guys for stopping in.

Cheers,
Chris

Grinder Cart, continued…

Being a night owl and only needing 5-6 hours a sleep sometimes has its benefits. It took two short evening sessions, after my wife went to bed on Sunday and Monday nights, but it’s all buttoned up.

I finished all the wood edging, masked off the sides and shot the top with the bedliner. The jury is still out on how durable this stuff is but, I’m hopeful.

One more project off the list. Who knows, at this rate I may actually get to the chop saw station by summer. I think when I started the goal was to be done before the show was flying. Uh…. Kinda blew by that one. Oops. :lol_hitti

Thanks, as always, for reading the ramblings. I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Chris

Work in the shop/garage is never done and there's always another project to do or refinements to be made once you think you might be getting close. That said, your grinder stand looks amazing! Good to hear that your other completed projects are being put to use. That's where I find the real pride and acomplished feelings come into play.

It's ironic that you posted this now since I 'assembled' a very similar grinder stand as your original one. All 6 bolts of it :D But what can you expect from Princess Auto (Canada's Harbor Freight equivalent) quality. I may need to disassemble it and put it back in the truck bed for weight and build a fancy cabinet like yours.

Let us know how the bedliner holds up. I've never seen it applied to wood before.

1/2 Cup - Always good to hear from you. Thanks for the compliment. I'm trying my best to get and keep the place organized. It's a struggle. Once the weather clears up enough for me to clean up the cruiser frame and get it to the blaster it will be going into the shop also. :scared: I'm running out of space, fast. :wtf:

rmalkow2 - Thanks. How is the CJ5 coming along? I keep checking in for updates. I started my misguided time with tools back in the 80's wrenching on a CJ7.

mefast - I appreciate you stopping in! The grinder cart was a good project and I'll report back on the bedliner after its seen some action.

1991Syclone - Glad that you like the colors. Here are the details...

Glidden Ultra-Hide 220 - This is a good contractor quality paint that won't break the bank. I used Semi-Gloss as it adds to the durability.

Colors...

Top 2/3 of the wall/Ceiling - WHITE - STRAIGHT FROM THE CAN
Bottom 1/3 of the wall - PEBBLE GREY 00NN 53/000
Wall Stripe - SEAL GREY 00NN 25/000
Cabinet Doors - CONNECTICUT BLUE 90BG 17/090

Stripe- 3 1/4" thick and 41" from the floor to the top of the stripe.

Hope that this helps.

Snow Day!

This morning my wife and I woke up to this...
IMG_8586-L.jpg

16" and it is still coming down. I ran the blower for 2 hours clearing the driveway. Now that we can get out, I'm taking a powder day! Hopefully my wife can move her afternoon call and we can both get out and make some turns. :rocker:

Thanks, as always, for reading and commenting. I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Chris

Haha, The CJ5 is still in winter storage. You see that white stuff in your picture? While we have not had a lot of it we did get just enough to shut some projects down for the winter. And just when I thought it was done they are predicting possibly more here tomorrow.
Soon I hope to get it our of slumber and start making some improvements.

One of the field surveyors used the roll-on version of the same brand on a MDF box in the back of the work SUV. I was really surprised how well it held up. The only nicks were from sharp metal stabbing it directly.

Absolutely love this grinder stand. I wondered why you had the pocket screw up but with the carpet, who will see it. :thumb up:

p.s. sorry to hear about the loss of your pal. I hope my dog is with us a long time.

rmalkow2- Don't feel like the Lone Ranger on that one. I had plans to start prepping the "New" FJ60 frame for the blaster. That was until we got two big storms and 2 1/2 feet of snow. :eyecrazy: Oh well, it's good to have to learn patience. I'm looking forward to seeing the CJ progress once it warms up.

Shorty - Thanks for the kind words about Doc. They really are Man's best friend.

I hope that the bedliner holds up. It sounds like it has a chance!

bj383ss- The cart was on the list to get done. I'm hoping to get the radial arm/ chop saw station knocked out next week, time/work permitting. How is your new shop coming along?

Thanks for stopping in, guys. It's always good to hear from ya.

Cheers,
Chris

Hey Chris,

So how much snow did y'all get? I read that Pinecliffe got more than 30"...

Hope you were able to make some fresh tracks at the local ski mountain!

nine4gmc - These next few months are the historically the snowiest of the year. We got a 7-footer in 2003 around this time!

Don - we got almost 30" in the last storm. It came in quickly and it was tough for the plows to keep up. It's been melting off since the daytime temps have been in the high 30's.

This is the view off the deck. You have to love the Colorado blue sky! :rocker:

Great place to visit but...

With that view I could live with some snow. Here in NW Florida we have Snow White beaches but unfortunately they're covered in skimpy bikinis right now. :D

I know I am a little late to chime in, but I love the grinder stand. When you look at the before and after picture, there definitely was a lot of wastes space there! It's nice when you can maximize your storage potential, and make something out of otherwise wasted space.

Don (dhubbard422) - The deck is my favorite "room" of the house, for sure. With the weather getting warmer we will be eating out there a lot.

Rub it in. We are just getting out of sweater and down jacket time.

Mr. Roboto - Thanks. It was a fun project. I've never been in a shop that had too much space. For my little multi use area, every square inch counts.
Side note... Great job on cutting the slab! The lift will be in soon!

Thanks for stopping in, Guys.

Cheers,
Chris

60 Degrees and Sunny! FJ60 Time…

In true Colorado fashion the weather has been going from snow one day to 65 degrees the next, even up here at 8800ft. It is just too nice to work on anything inside so I decided to head out and see if I could get something done on the 60. They say even a 1000 mile journey starts with a single step. Today’s progress was a step, a small step. Only 999.9 + miles to go.

The “New” frame (Snowless)
IMG_8607-L.jpg

Before I can get this thing to the blaster all the extra bits need to be removed. Also, A1 gives you a better deal if most of the caked on grease is off so that was first on the list.

How long do you think the power steering was leaking? Geez. :lol_hitti

I’m going after it with a putty knife. The up side is that the grease kept the rust away. The transmission cross-member was, ahem, even more "protected" than this.
IMG_8609-L.jpg

Brake & Fuel lines that need to come off…
IMG_8614-L.jpg

The salvage yard left on the rear bumper.
IMG_8628-L.jpg

Not that they didn’t try to get it off but all the bolts were frozen and, thanks to the guy with the impact, now stripped. :wtf: Out came the grinder…
IMG_8631-L.jpg

A few cut–off wheels later and… I win.
IMG_8637-L.jpg

Check it out… The rust has eaten the cross-member. Good thing I will be removing it to make room for the new bumper w tire carrier.

This is a frame reinforcement plate that is riveted in the back section of the frame. More rust, of course, so they need to come out. There is one on each side. More grinding, a lot more.
IMG_8639-L.jpg

I still have the other side to do. There is still a little more hammer work ahead to remove the plate. These are a real pain to get out. Once I treat the inside of the frame I’ll weld in some additional steel and box this section.

Here is how the frame sits ½ a step later. A few more little sessions and it should be ready to take to the blaster.
IMG_8641-L.jpg

Since the weather is getting better and staying better, the shop time will be sharing time with other outdoor projects. I still need to get supplies for the chop saw station. That was supposed to be today but it was too nice to spend the day in HD and the car. I hope to get to it next week.

Thanks, as always, for reading the ramblings. I appreciate it.

Cheers,
Chris

Been dropping by, but not posting.

But - how quick does your place go from knee deep snow to working outside on the chassis? WOW. I hope there's no more snow envisioned. :shocking:

And great work (as usual) on the grinder stand. Will be watching developments on the chop saw stand.

Just got done reading the whole thread. Dang. Great job. Now I don't feel so good about my garage and my envy meter is pegged. Love the FJ project. I hope the berry patch project had snow drains..lol. Max Jax look awesome. Need some. So sorry about your dog. We have three rescue dogs and two rescue cats. Your pal had love and a great home when he might have had none. Good job on that. I was just up in Denver and Evergreen in March. Great place and it was 70 out. I was picking up parts for my '81 Cherokee project.

Thanks for posting and providing ideas. I stole the slim LED light above the garage door idea.

What a fantastic transformation!
I first saw your thread when you had begun to install the beetle kill pine. I didn't book mark it😧 and only found it again yesterday.
Read it from start to finish & love what you have done.

Stayed in Boulder a few years ago with a friend and remember the snow one day & glorious sunshine the next. Would love to get back there again some day.

Bookmarked & eagerly waiting the next update.
