I got tired of my Akro-Mils drawer cabinets taking up so much horizontal shelf space, and ending up with a pile of **** accumulating in front of them (as flat surfaces tend to do in a garage).

So I finally got off my *** and bought some plywood last fall. Been meaning to share these and kept forgetting.

Now all four cabinets take up the shelf space that just one (well, 1.5) took up previously, and there's no ledge for me to pile **** onto. When I need access, I just slide out the relevant cabinet.

The box fits super tight into the gorilla rack (ahem, sorry, Xtreme garage shelving), tighter than I would have liked because I got in a hurry and didn't get the dividers cut perfect.

I need to organize things more, and bust out the label maker and label the ends, once I establish some sense of order, But I've been too busy with my paying job to really spend a lot of time doing anything else in the garage (which shows, because its a disaster).

were I doing it over again, I would probably have used some corner braces or some scrap cut into triangles to attach a proper face to each panel.

since I used full extension but not over-extension drawers, and didn't have spare room to recess the chests enough to cut handles directly into the panels, I had to get creative with handles too, as you can see:

<video controls="controls" height="480" name="Creative handles" src="http://skitch.peelman.us/parts%20box/VID_0001.mov"></video>

A couple of screws act as stoppers and the L-brace just articulates on one screw.
Excellent idea....I'm going to build something like this.

Thanks!

For reference, those are 20" 100# drawer slides, 20" panels, 20" cabinets. if you have the depth for them, 22" slides would give you enough room to leave a simple handle / pull mounted to the face at the front of the cabinet to pull the unit out (holy preposition overload batman).

Over-extension slides, if you can find them, would be another suggestion.

I want these tilting clear bins. My old plastic drawers are busted up and full of ****. It takes forever to find stuff cause I pull the drawer out to see what's there. By the time I found the piece, I forgot why I needed it. I'm thinking the clear view without the handle in the way will help out.

Of course if I cut back on some other things, maybe I could find things faster.

Had both sizes at my cabin. For the price they are super nice. I built 6" wide shelves and then hung these below them. Furred them out with a 2x4 to make them easier to access; sitting the face of the bin almost flush to the shelf.

Really liked them allot. Sold the cabin in my divorce. Still have the bins.

Menards has them on sale from time to time. Last I looked they were stocking then.

Turned an old filing cabinet on it's side and gave it a couple of coats of spray paint to match.

I think my wife saw this on pintrest, if I am honest...

From a fellow ohio'an that is priceless!!!

The terms for construction contracts around here blow my mind. When I lived in LA they could complete projects overnight that take 6 months to do here.

Do you have a pictures of the back side where the L-brace in mounted?

I intended to originally. They way they are right now they rub against the sliding panel too much, so I would have to add some spacers. Just haven't cared enough to mess with it. Ideally I would have just made the box and panels 2" bigger and used 22" slides. Someday I might redo it all, who knows.

Here's what I came up with for spray paint can storage. Simple piece of 3" pvc cut at a 45 angle and one screw through the bottom.

(Should be an album of five pics, not sure it's working?)

Loving this thread. I recently built an axle stand rack. It gets them out of the way.

I've done a few things on my garage walls.

My NJ house, I built a 4' x 26' platform, along the back wall, 6' high. I tied it into the existing stairs and put a removable rope railing on it. Using my Direct Lift as an elevator, I stored a few biles up on it.

More pictures of the entire project

In my FL house, I only had 10' high ceilings, so I build cabinets with a 3' platform on top.

In TN, I used a lot of slot wall

For my most used socket wrenches, I bought some cheap sockets in 1/4", 3/8" and 1/2", drilled holes, and pressed them into a piece of wood.

My TX garage, I have one side dedicated to woodworking and the other side for my bikes.

I'm using this metal pegboard for my woodworking tools.

Not a wall storage, I made this flip rolling cabinet to house my planer and miter saw

I got hit in the head by some metal that had been hanging on the wall for two weeks on a ladder hook. I have gone to nut and bolt two pieces of perforated steel for some stuff now.

they are they are stuck in holes bored at a slight upward angle into 2x4s mounted to the wall.

Whole thing cost me maybe 30 bucks. Think the most expensive part was the hex structural lags holding the 2xs to the studs.

got the idea from this guys video

There have been many versions of the "Tye-Wrap" storage unit, here's mine. It uses only stuff that otherwise would be relegated to the "Blue Box" for recycling. It utilizes shock absorber, tooth paste, and shaving cream boxes mounted (glued) to a small cardboard sheet, it can hang on a nail here or hang on a nail there, or be totally portable. There is also space available for stirring sticks and tongue depressors for other spreading uses. When finished I'll probably shoot some paint on it to make it look more uniform and not something retrieved from the garbage can.
