Merry Christmas Jon, it was near enough to 100F here today for Christmas Day. Looks a tad bit cooler for you.

Nice pic of the shed covered in snow.

Cheers GB.

Grumblebum,
I hope you had a great Christmas!
I like the heat much better than cold at my age, but 100F for me on Christmas day would just be wrong, LOL!

Thanks!

Happy New Year to all!
Here is some of what's been happening in my little piece of the world lately.

I got a retractable electrical cord reel on Black Friday at Menards.
Finally got it put up a couple of days ago.
I installed an outlet, box, & wiring for it, although I still have to vampire the power for it from another electrical outlet.

..
Got a cool stool (rhyme time) for the garage as a Christmas present from my Very Cool Wife.

..
Did a road trip yesterday morning to White Pigeon, Michigan for this.
It's an International brand side box for a tool chest. I'm thinking of hanging it on the left side of my Husky.
It was on Craigslist at a very attractive price, and I got it for an even more attractive price. (Never hurts to offer less, eh?)
BTW my wife says I need an intervention, and should keep away from Craigslist.

An intervention? We are here to help intervene! You could be paying full price someplace else.

Craigslist was invented to help stock your Gary's with cool stuff.

Happy New Years .

captain14,
Thanks for stopping by!
My wife will get a laugh out of what you said.

Happy New Year to you as well!

I really like the looks of that shop stool! Looks like it would be comfortable to work from...What is the brand name of it? Did your wife pick it up locally?

Ah nice little rolling stool I like how it's not soft on the top old less fabric surface to get dirty. Have a great year!

sean Buick 76,
That's one of the reasons I like it, as it's easy to clean up.

(My previous garage stool was the bottom part of a computer desk chair.
I combined that with another broken computer chair that had a good back to make a complete unbroken chair for my son).

I hope you have a great year as well!

Very nice build thread Jon.

I haven't been on GJ in a long time, but I'm hoping to build a new 16'×24' "1-1/2 car" garage this spring so I was glad to see your thread today. We have a crappy "2 car" garage now that is barely 18' wide and 20' deep with a low 3/12 pitch roof. It's really just a big yard barn. Can't fit more than one car in it. With the storage shelving our Honda Pilot barely fits. But my wife hates the garage's location on our lot (it side loads at the rear corner of the yard so we have no backyard). So she wants to move it to get all of our backyard back and have a useable garage in the winter. I have to see how big I can go on my city lot. 20'×24' might not pass the board review. Our zoning rules are a little funny. The peak of the garage roof can't be any higher than the house. Fortunately we have a 2 story Cape Cod with a 12/12 pitched roof. So, so long as my garage roof is less than 37' tall, I'm good! 😁 The plan is to go with an 8/12 pitch attic storage truss. I need the storage space!

I'm also planning to use a Liftmaster jack shaft door opener. Did you have to special order your garage door or does it work on a standard door?

BoilermakerFan,
Thanks!

Good luck with your new build!

I have a standard nothing special garage door.
The only door that comes to mind that the Liftmaster doesn't work well with is a Wayne Dalton
door. That has to do with how the torsion tube & springs are done on a Wayne Dalton I believe.

I cleaned up the Craigslist side box and mounted it to my Husky roll-around.
I am going to have to swap the swivel casters to the other end of the Husky, because the side box hangs down lower into the area where the casters swivel.
The seller of side box didn't have a key for the lock.
When I was telling my boss about my purchase with no key, he said he had a new spare lock with keys I could have.
Thanks Steve!

..
Home Depot sells a butcher-block top for a tool chest for small money.
I bought one and took it to a cabinet shop to have it cut to size, & brushed on 5 coats of clear polyurethane on the cut edge. (The cut edge really sucked in the poly).

..

I'm pleased with how it turned out. (My wife said lt looks nice but I still need an intervention)! :lol_hitti

Nice craigslist score on the side box. It's awesome when something like that works out so well. The top makes it look like it was there all along. Well done.

The toolbox looks great with the add on and the butcher block top

Thanks for the link on the stool...

I think everyone here on The Garage Journal has a addiction to either or all of the following, Craigslist, Ebay, Auctions or antique stores

Nice job mating that side box to your Husky set, it looks like it always came that way. And that butcher block top is awesome looking against the black. I bet that makes for a nice work surface as well.

Nice work Jon, looks great.

Did the RD samples come out for just a little photo or is that a clue for an upcoming project ?

Cheers GB.

GB,
Thanks!
I've had the Racedeck samples on the floor for awhile just to see if I still want to purchase them as much as I did after doing my wife's craftroom with them. Yep, still want to do it.

The side box looks Good but now you have identified a need for a table saw or at least a
A
Good
Circular saw with blade and a straight edge to guide the saw.

captain14,
Thanks!
I have a 7-1/4" circular saw. I don't have a 60 tooth carbide tipped blade for finish work.
I priced a blade at Lowes, it was going to cost me over $20.00 with tax.
I gave the cabinet shop $10.00 to make the cut.

Here's what I worked on last weekend.

I have a VERY old (serial # says it was built in May of 1965) Ariens snowblower.
There actually is a very cool web site for these old Ariens snowblowers.
http://gold.mylargescale.com/scottychaos/ariens/index.html

..
I bought it on eBay in 2008 (I think 2008 ... I have CRS sometimes:lol:) & drove to Joliet Illinois to pick it up.

It's been overall a good machine, but lacked electric start. (I have a bad shoulder, and pull starting it is not my favorite activity).
Last week I got the model and serial numbers from the engine, and finally did some in depth research for an electric starter for a Tecumseh engine.
It turns out there are new aftermarket starters available!!!!!
I had one in my hands 2 days later thanks to Amazon Prime.

It was very simple to install.
The starter kit came with all the necessary fasteners, as well as an extension cord for the starter switch.
On the snowblower itself the flywheel had teeth, and the mounting holes for the starter motor itself were already threaded.
I did have to drill and tap one hole for a Helicoil as it looked like the factory broke off a tap in the very bottom of the hole. (The hole looked egg-shaped, and there was bits of very hard metal impacted into the bottom of the hole).
..

..
The punched holes in the sheet-metal cover to mount the starter switch were already there from the factory.

..
It works GREAT, and my shoulder will thank me for the rest of my days.

An old classic snow blower... I bet it handles like a tank! Solid upgrade on that machine. I'm going to have to side with rmalkow2 ... I have a hunch that Feb is going to be snowy in the south of the state.
