Hi folks, been reading the forums with interest for a while.. I'm UK based and have been collecting various tools over the years mainly to work on my old Triumph motorcycle. Bought a vise recently but haven't found much info on it but it had an interesting history. The guy I bought it off was from Devon which is in SW England.. he stated it was left behind by the US military after WW2 when they were based in the area preparing for D-Day. Sounds plausible.. does any one have any further info on the Erie Tool Works and whether they supplied the military? I can't find any military marking but I'm not sure how likely that would have been. Thanks for any help!

Many US companies supplied the WWII effort. I have a Rock Island vise that is stamped with US Navy property along with a 9/44 date. It is very possible that you have markings on that vise somewhere but it is covered with the paint job someone has sprayed on. The markings on my vise are very light and were only visible after I stripped all the paint off the vise.

Great vise. Suggest you write the history on a card and put it under the vise when you mount it. Some future craftsman will find your gift and appreciate your thought.

Off topic but my Rock Island was born in 9/44 also. Long lost brothers?

I just inherited this same vice from my father in-law, and mounted it on my workbench yesterday. I might look for some military markings, but this vice has been used a lot. It will need a complete cleaning.

What I am looking for is if the vise has replaceable jaws. If there are screws, I cannot see them.
