Two estate sales in my town this morning. The first was down the street from my grandmother's house, so I had to be careful not to get caught or I'd be trapped all day. I wasn't expecting to find anything. My town is more about appearances than practicality or function.

The first sale was a bust, but I escaped without being seen.
The second was across town. High end furniture and nik-naks. I did walk out with two items though. At $30 I felt I overpaid, but was ok with it.

Stanley #71-1/2 router plane w/10-29-01 patent date and 1/2" blade
Thorsen #2032 1" combo wrench (picked up for someone else)

It wasn't as bad as I thought. The sold prices on the Stanley plane average around $80.

Got some big plans for tomorrow, can't wait.

Made pawn shop stop the other day for a few finds.

A non-tool find was The WrestleMania collection on VHS. Yes, VHS. Priced at $5. Sounded more than fair to me.

Also, body spoon stamped forged USA with no name.

Matco Silver Eagle E Torx set.

No haggle, paid $23 total for all three. I was very happy only when I got home found out WrestleMania 1 is chewed. ARRGGGH! (rips shirt off Hulkster style). Didnt check all the tapes there. Guess I don't get to see Mr. T.

I would like to try and repair this.

Armstorng BetRGrip
Hi 3bay. Did you mean J.P. Danielson BetRGrip? Did you forget a comma between ‘Armstrong’ and ‘BetRGrip’? Or are they actually Armstrong? I've never seen anything but JP Danielson BET'R GRIP, so inquiring minds want to know!

Either way, what is the date code?

Guess I don't get to see Mr. T.
"Shut up, fool!"

My town is more about appearances than practicality or function.
Mine too, jake. Snuck in here 25 years ago and bought a fixer-upper Victorian (built in 1893) before the town got all yuppified. But I'll tell you what - they spend some bucks on antiques and quirky old ****! Lately I've been getting into "re-purposing" and turning some flea market finds into some spending money.

Only reason I say all this is my initial reaction to your Stanley router plane with the awesome forged-in branding.

This may be sacrilegious here, but that thing would make an awesome coat hanger on the wall in a tiny entranceway or even better as a towel hanger in a tiny downstairs bathroom with an antique cabinet sink and fixtures. I’m dead serious. Interior designers, with-it builders, or old home owners who are into funky fixtures would eat that thing up.

Today was opening day at my Early Bird #2, which closes for the winter. Here is my paltry take... two cool old reciprocating valve grinders!

Grinders_zpsi0sfphpm.jpg

The 1935 and 1939 Duro catalogs have a No. 412 and a No. 711, but no No. 411, which I am guessing is earlier than 1935.

The black enameled one is a Zim, marked ZIM MANUFACTURING CO. / CHICAGO / PATS APPLD FOR.

:lol_hitti More like the pawn shop says "I pity the fool who buys this broken vhs" . All good though, there are 13 other tapes in there.

Yes that wrench is a J.P. Danielson of Jamestown, NY. That's what happens when I do stuff in a mad rush. Thanks, I went back and fixed it.

I got out for 20yrs, but got sucked back in 8yrs ago. My town is mostly faux-money with the trappings to support the fantasy. We're one of only two towns in the state that are officially classified as "Agriculture Only". Which means no retail or business allowed, with minor exceptions to maintain the facade of having an East and West Villiage (both in the middle of nowhere). There are less than a handful of real farms in town, but lots of properties with 1 horse and a sign at the end of the driveway so they get the tax break. The only thing that gets farmed here are mosquitos, and "rare" salamanders that get the Conservation Commission in an authoritarian huff. I've got medallions from them nailed to trees on my property that ban me from dumping leaves on a third of my land, but they won't give me a tax credit for the restrictions. (does this qualify as a mini-rant ?)

Anyway, I think the plane will eventually get a restoration and end up as functional wall art in the mancave, outside the door to my shop, to compliment the early scroll saw on the mantle. Not sure yet.

No problem. What is the last digit on the date code near the double hex broached hanging hole?

the Conservation Commission in an authoritarian huff.
Don't get me started on the Historic Commission.

The only thing that gets farmed here are mosquitos
That reminds me of my one other (non-tool) find from today...

Our HC has its moments, but not too bad compared to others around here. I know of an area in another town where some of the houses have rooms at the front of the house that can't be lived in. They're required to be staged with antiques or replicas that conform to the historic nature of the house because they can be seen through the windows from the sidewalk. Those houses get some tax breaks, but I'll be damned if I'd ever buy one.

I've got a small box full of gloves like that stashed away somewhere. I haven't seen them in years, but I know they're still hiding around here.

Today was such a bust... Went to probably 6-8 sales... Either nothing there, or way overpriced and still nothing there...

Forgot to take pics of first group, just some cans of mineral spirits, a good bottle of clear PVC cement, and a really really really long HDMI cable, paid a couple bucks.

Picture is a old metal craftsman box with Circle-H sockets, t-bar, extension, and a =v= breaker. No ratchet :( Misc wrenches, one S-K and one S-K Wayne. Other wrenches are japan/china. Little 4" Craftsman USA adjustable wrench, that made my day okay. I think I paid $10 for the CMan box/sockets, $2 for the wrenches, and another $2 for the CMan adjustable.

I've never seen a 6-pt dbe wrench before, I'm sure plenty are out there just never looked... lol.

Beer 5 cents mirror / sign... $1

Found some metal stands for my neighbor, kind of neat they had knockouts for an electrical receptacle. $5 for the pair.

Just before lunch as I was setting some solid surface material on a reception counter a buddy texted about a toolbox he found and after a bit of pics and discussion I'll take delivery of this box and tools tomorrow:

I don't know any branding on the tools yet but I'm pretty sure the box is a Bonney:)

Had the day off today, so I went to a well advertised estate sale that listed a bunch of tools, in various tool box stacks. Sale started at 9, earliest I could get there was at 930, as I had to drop my son off at school. There were 19 people in front of me when I got there, but since they were only allowing 6 people in the garage at any given time it still took about an hour before I got in. Meanwhile, while I was in line, I saw an odd site. A couple of older Hipster-looking ladies came out with a good share of the various name brand larger wrenches, and all the socket sets, of which there were about 5 SK green boxes in the mix. They had quite a haul. I imagine they were most likely resellers, as they did'nt exactly look like mechanics.

After I finally got in, there were still tons of Craftsman stuff left, and I managed to put together a little mix of maybe 7 Williams super-wrenches from different parts of the garage. When I asked for a price, the guy running the sale siad- "Oh, these are Williams, you've got $50 here." - To which I politely said, oh no I don't. I was just putting them together for the next guy. LOL Anyways, I spent $4. Managed to find a nice West German Elora midget set, a cool ruler, and a nice crucifix, a magnetic hide-a-key, and a few more misc. midget wrenches. I'm a big fan of Elora wrenches, I have some DBEs that are my favorite.

It is a genuine but mistreated Stanley made in England. Apparently the raised webs were a later thing, perhaps to increase rigidity after reducing the thickness of the casting.

I guess I learned something today. Just when I think I know something, I'm wrong again.

Thanks for clarifying this.

Sorry I missed this, wrenchguy. Yes, they're called grinders in the Duro catalog. And in every other vintage catalog I have. I don't think I've ever heard or seen one called a lapper. They can be used for lapping. Most of the old valve grinders came with a few different blades for grinding with a grinding compound and a different attachment (usually rubber) for lapping with a lapping compound.

EDIT: As long as we're on the subject, Blackhawk socket sets had a really cool 1/2-inch drive socket attachment in the 1920's and 1930's that took different blades for valve seat grinding with a 1/2-inch drive speeder handle! I always thought that was ingenious.

In the early 70s, I had a couple of sets of those stands. Mine were dark brown with the knockouts for receptacles. A friend of mine bought a new house and needed a work bench so I gave him both sets. I couldn't even begin to tell you where I got them. LOL!

Picked up this filthy nut driver set on a $1 table. Mostly out of curiosity. So what lurks under all of that crud? Cleaned up a couple of them and supprise... it's a set of MAC nut drivers.

Man, Merc... you & Nine find the best stuff down there... I hate you both! :lol_hitti

Today I'm *planning* on doing my pawn shop rounds and hitting up a few more garage sales. Never know what you will find...

Not much post worthy until yesterday, I went to someone doing their own estate sale one city over. First I picked up this Ingersol Rand SS3L# unused compressor still wrapped in the cardboard crating. Guy bought it and never installed 220, so there it sat. A friend of mine and the people running the sale helped me stuff it in my SUV. Had to take to top off the crating to get the hatch closed. Got it unpacked, made in 2002, it has and American made Emerson motor, which is nice. Paid $200, which I thought was a smoking deal.
IMG_2314.jpg
IMG_2319.jpg

Next was the pile of tools I rounded up. A Stihl 041 Farm Boss, runs, but needs new gas and a carb overhaul, some Starrett dividers, pocket caliper, radius gauges, indicator base, small machinist vise, 3 Craftsman impact sets, a 12pc Freud carving set, big Kant clamp, Nicholson file set, Ridgid pipe and strap wrenches, gasket hole cutter set, 36 Victor torch tips, and a Peterson chain vise grip new in the box. Paid $118 for the pile.

I picked up my next project for the garage. This will definitely keep me off of the estate sale/yard sale picking circuit for a while.

1960 Chevy Impala 2-door, 283-2bbl/Powerglide. Lots of rust--floor is gone, driver side rocker is nearly gone, perforations and dents everywhere, but all the trim is there. It needs a windshield, but the car in my avatar will serve as the sheet metal donor. $2600 cash, plus delivery to my door for a nominal fee. I hope to take delivery tomorrow.:bounce::bounce:

That looks like a fun project! I once did a frame up resto on a 77 Ford so I know the amount of work you are under taking ! Good luck and have fun with it.

This socket set box was the only thing I brought home from the flea market this morning. It was full of miscellaneous brands, mainly junk. Guy was trying to sell it all. I only wanted the box. Not my era or niche, and it needs a little work, but might be good trade fodder.

That's a rust patina. A dolly shouldn't have any plating on it. Just a highly polished surface at best, maybe some paint on the non-used sides.

Clean it up good and buff it out and it should be ready to get back to work.

I had a bad week this week but my buddy and I managed some how to live through it . It wasn't pretty at all but like I said we lived. Literally hundreds of cuts and bruises , internal bleeding on my spleen and a broken vertebra in my back . lots of stitches and imbedded glass . I have a steal cage around me to support my back ... I probably look like Frankenstein with stitches every where holding me together and the "cage" but I still managed one sale this morning with the help of my daughter to carry the loot!
She told me I may have a bit of a problem if I still can't pass up a sale after all that I been through this week. I figure you guys here may be the only ones to understand the drive to do such a thing... Or maybe I'm just toooooo far gone over the rust junkie edge! :wtf:
It took two hours to cut my buddy out of the crane but thankfully he only suffered a separated shoulder. We had a front tire blow out at 70 mph in a 35 ton boom truck . Even at 250lbs and all I had, there was no keeping it on the road.
Now back to the important stuff! I spent 74.00 bucks this morning on this batch of coolness!
Sears wooden crate
4Pounds of lead
Jewel coal hammer
Pair of Grand dual grip "C" clamps
Craftsman boot knife with sheath
225 Q Cattaraugus fighting knife
Leetonia scaling hammer, cross peen -straight peen
Calumet 3 lb cross peen beater
The broken handled claw hammer for .50 cents was a steal! Old Cheney with a nail holder!
One old Stanley notched logo claw hammer
2 old plumb logo claw hammers
a novelty "ice Breaker" hammer
another 3lb hammer I haven't identified the maker mark yet???
old wooden zigzag rule- not sure who made this one
The sun rubber Company Donald Duck car... Thought it was cool...:dunno:
My second pair of Eifel-flash "plierrench"! this one only has one jaw though and no leather pouch.
8" crescent
3 lectrolite combo wrench's- 1/2, 9/16, 5/8
Real nice Papco flare tool
old Apex saw set for large two man saws
an old front desk bell... I guess I always wanted one since I use to watch hee-haw and the empty arms hotel skit...:lol_hitti

Holy chit, top! Glad you and your buddy lived through that crash!

Guess you were practicing some retail therapy to ease the trauma. Whew!

Top, I'm glad you and your buddy survived, if with injuries! Looking at that truck you were both VERY lucky! Here's to hoping you heal quickly without permanent injury or disability!

Not a huge find, but the estate sale was the first of the year for me, was only 2 blocks away and only spent $5.98. A Stanley Handyman square, small surform, and some misc small tools.f3966172fb6d10afe9b34637664c0ebb.jpg20170304_105452.jpg20170304_105455.jpg99faed7a2223eb2442da86a133c86bca.jpg

Lugz- here you are. I was not aware of a date code. Just realized the wheel has damage too.

Dngr- good story, I love when I take the time to piece a set together that the seller didn't realize was a set, and they throw out an insane price.

Junk nice suckworthy price on that haul!

Deadly slow day today... until the last stop (which had a heck of a "lead in" in the add about "same house for >30 years and having been married for >60!

I got there as they opened it up, (15 early...) Everyone was milling around the driveway and I'd bought a crystal vase and 2 jars of old marbles for a buck and a half. Then I asked if tools were going to be pulled out, after a little hemming and hawing, I was given over to the man of the house, (eighties?) and he took me to has back shed. very cluttered, clearly he'd worked at this and that over the years.

Then I saw the red 6 drawer tool box, and it's a Proto. I asked if it was for sale and we dug it out a bit and opened and closed drawers. "Sure, I'll sell it and all the tools in it for $25. I just want it gone. I'd kept seeing "SK" as we looked and I immediately agreed I found another SK socket box on the bench and "Oh, that goes with your box!" Another one on the floor and that was also included as well and an SK driver on the wall...

So his daughter shows up (about my age) and asks her dad if she can send others back here? and he says "Sure! I just sold this gentleman the red tool box, it's all paid for!" (It was not...) I corrected him and paid her before things could change, and she thanks me for being honest while he says "Dang! I was sure you paid me..."

So this is what $25 got me today:

The box as I saw it (the top was open...)

Most of the SK stuff - Wrenches - the yellow metric set was complete the SAE missing a 1/2 and 9/16

The sockets and Pliers: the complete 3/8 drive is metric, the rest is mostly SAE.
