I started on this garage addition in April 2006. I am basically complete now. This structure is 31x54x12. I had to attach it to my home to meet local building codes. I subcontracted out the concrete, framing, plumbing, insulation, masonary, roofing and some of the electrical. I did all the finish trim, walls, ceilings, paint, floors, door construction, and compressor plumbing. I had to put a good bit of pre planning into the structure. It has central air and heat. I bought a 7.5 HP I/R compressor and plumbed a loop system with 7 drops. The attic is floored (18x40). I fabricated the doors using cedar frames reinforced with metal bracing. The doors took me about 10 days to fab, insulate, trim, paint and install. I have yet to put the windows in them but, I have the glass and will do this soon. The lift is a Rotary 10K capacity asymetrical model. It works well, I have a **** Blast bead blaster. I plan to piddle on a few old muscle cars. This was a fun project but required a tremendous amount of my labor (and $). I am proud of the way it turned out and hope you will enjoy seeing photos of the construction.

Wow, you got a lot done since April, it looks great!

Two things kinda surprised me, all the plywood inside instead of sheetrock & the makeup of your doors. Not that it's a bad thing at all, just different. I like it!

Mike, that's an awesome garage! I love the swing doors as opposed to the usual roll-ups. How has the epoxy floor been standing up when you drive the cars in? Have the rocks from the driveway been problematic? Also, why did you opt for plywood interior walls instead of the usual sheet rock?

Thanks for the compliments. I have had no trouble with the rock driveway. I think the secret to not bringing the rocks into the garage is in their size. You can get this stuff from pea gravel size and then on up. I got a slightly larger size and migration of the rocks is not a problem. However, I put some of it on a walkway that I have in the back yard and it is not the best surface for a walkway.
I cannot tell you exactly why I opted for wood walls. The 'luan' was pretty inexpensive (at least to me) @ about $16 per sheet. Another thing was that I knew I could put this stuff up and I knew I could not put up the sheetrock. The luan is 3/8". It went up easily (I shot way more than 10000 finishing nails) and painted well (I bought a airless spray rig and that worked well-especially when priming and painting the bricks). The seams between the sheets are somewhat evident although I caulked all of them. I could have used some other type of sandable caulking and got a better finish. But you know that it is only a garage!
The epoxy floor seems to be holding up well. I let it sit for at least a week before pulling any vehicles in there. I followed Rustoleum's instructions to the letter. I made a few mistakes and you can see a few 'roller strokes'. However, with cars in there just about no one but me would ever see the errors.
I had a great time building this addition.
This forum was really invaluable to me in getting the job done.
Thanks,
Mike

OMG....you painted the brick?

I had painted the brick on my home some years ago. I painted the bricks on the addition to match. Now the addition looks way better than the house so my wife is telling me that I have to paint the house again! Always something.

The Chevelle is a 71SS454, auto, tri black with ps, pb and a/c. It is real straight and pretty much unmolested although it is not a #'s match. The Camaro is a '69 (but not an RS or SS or z28) that I did a frame off restoration on in '05. It was pretty rough and needed new quarters and trunk pan and right front fender. It is #'s matching (350ci with TH350 trans-although I put an 700r4 overdrive in it). It is a p/s and factory a/c car also. It is real straight now and both are fun drivers although that 700r4 is the way to go. The Camaro is pretty quick but the Chevelle is a real stump puller and can just melt a set of tires. I have just bought a 70 Chevelle SS that needs some help. I am going to fix it up and then sell it (hopefully).

I also have a '53 Chevy 210 sedan that my sweet aunt (who died last Nov at age 92) gave me. She had bought it new in 1953 in Crystal Springs, Ms. It pretty much stayed there but she drove it in 1955 to the openning of Disneland in LA, Ca. Three other teachers went with her. I can't imagine driving that thing that far-no a/c, no radio, no heater! It has only 53k miles. I repainted it and redid the chrome. It has the original interior. It is a cute thing and special because Emmy always told me that she was saving the car for me. It is now 53 years old. I drove it to a cruise in last night.

Do you have any sort of security system? If seems odd that with those cars all you have is two metal rods going into the floor. Not to mention, how do you open them from the outside? Am I not seeing something in the pictures?

I have a central station security system in this bldg-fire and burglary. This town (23500 pop) is very safe-I think there were only 2 car thefts last year. I am not saying it doesn't happen-it is just rare here.
I have added some locks since these pictures were made. The doors will open from the outside, there are handles on both sides now. They, however, cna only be locked from the inside.
