Hey GB I've read your whole adventure so far.. I also have a relatively small garage so I've gotten alot of great ideas here. I've enjoyed reading all of it. Thank you for sharing!

I'm normally just a lurker. We have a place about an hour west called Wisconsin Dell's where they give tours of the area in what they call Ducks.. Tho I haven't ridden them I've seen them while there. I think they have a good size fleet. http://www.wisconsinducktours.com
Thought everyone might like the video.

Yikes, feel bad for those ladies. I guess some guys are just meant to be single. :dunno:

Lol, yep that's what I was thinking with that fella also RM...to be honest I would have thought that if he was that aggressive they would not have him in a public animal park.

Hey Rod, just checking in on you to see what you've been up to. Looks like you've been busy.

Maybe the croc has gone to the other side and just hasn't come out of the closet yet?????:dunno::lol_hitti:willy_nil

Thanks Dan, yep playing catch up. Not having a closet conversation with that fella though :wtf:

GB, you certainly have been getting around.

There is one DUKW locally owned, they an absolutely fascinating vehicle..

Regards

1/2 Cup, it has been a very busy couple of months. The DUKW's were in the middle of being retrofitted with power steering the guy was saying. Apparently more than an injury or two from the non-powersteering ones over years gone by.

One of those DUKW's being restored here in Castlemaine.

That's pretty cool Simon. They seem to be a reasonably bullet proof vehicle.

Mike, thanks for taking the time to read my waffle. Much appreciated. Hopefully some ideas work in your space also. I just need to get some time to finish off a few projects now.

Those ducks look to be getting along alright in that video, look very similar to the ones here.

All, I've been very much playing catchup lately, not a lot of QST time since about mid March. Have spent another week in New Zealand for work also since, so just getting some energy back has taken a week or two.

I did spend a bit of time getting through TimeWarpF100's eco boost thread, it's over 180 pages but a damn good read for those of you that like the old trucks.

At work I now have an extra set of hands learning the ropes so I've handed off a heap of work and have taken today off as it's school holidays for the kids so spending time today with my son pottering in the garage. It's a mess.

Having a mate that owns a small body shop look at the roof on my Hilux either today or early next week. After years of travelling a main coal haul road my roof has lots of chips that have started to corrode. Also the roof drip seals are now perished to the point where I found a water leak into my cab under the drivers side (RH side) foot well. It's coming from the top corner of the windscreen seal I think, so the plan is to get the windscreen out, have the roof tended to and have probably a new windscreen and associated seals put back in. I have the new roof drip seals here.

Anyway this is what the roof looks like at the moment.

Also got the microfibre cloths washed from when I did actually got 5 minutes to detail the inside of the vehicles last weekend (this is when I found the leak in my truck).

Nice sunny day today. Off in a bit to see DD in her play (she's been doing a school holidays drama class all week).

Cheers GB.

Nice quiet and sunny day at home today. Kids pottered around doing their own thing or helped me undo the cleaning up I had done, wifie has been watching last years masterchef so baked up a few goodies (actually I've been watching it with her ;)), and I got some QST :)

Sorry no before photos, trust me it was bad; but managed to get the garage cleaned up to the point where I got both vehicles actually in there together for probably what is the first time in 5 years or so after having built the extension.

I am going to have to re-Gerard the front area here, the twins are right up to the front of my truck (which I did expect) so if I wanted to do anything at night it’s going to be annoying to have to back out the vehicles. :dunno:

View media item 69872
Good clearance and access to the cupboards up beside the truck.

and likewise between vehicles…

Still a bit of home finding for a few things to do tomorrow (nothing a small garden shed wouldn't solve), but am happy that the vehicles are in. They both need a good bit of TLC now after much neglect being outside for so long.

Also think I'm going to pull the trigger soon on a Liftmaster 8500. The chain driven thing you can see in that last photo is playing up again. I'll then have some ceiling area to utilize for ladders and such as they don't have a decent home out of the way at the present.

Cheers GB.

GB: i'm certainly not a master at GARAGE TETRIS yet, but looks like you are getting closer to getting your degree. WELL DONE!!

so are those cabinets made out of old blackboards that you can write on with chalk and erase and re write as needed or do tell?

congrats on getting a car in the garage. i've got a small 2 car garage at our place and i bet i haven't had a car on my side in over 20 years now, but my wife's side is USUALLY open so she can park in her side.

have a great weekend!!!

Well done, that's a major milestone!

Thanks Andrew, yep it has been a long time coming, now I just need to keep it that way.

Great job on getting your cars in the garage. I have a double garage and that's for the cars only.

Cheers Aaron.

Thanks Drives, those cabinets are simply pantry style cupboards I brought on sale, just painted the doors with a melamine primer and painted with chalkboard paint. They need a bit of tidy up to finish off the edges.

Cheers GB.

Nice to have your tools organized and still get your vehicles in the garage with room to walk around them even if you have to back them out for work space.

GB, top stuff.

Your garage is looking a treat..

Thanks 1/2 Cup. There is still lots to do but slowly chipping away at it.

Nice to have your tools organized and still get your vehicles in the garage with room to walk around them even if you have to back them out for work space.

I think you are right RM, just being at least moderately organized and keeping cleaned up after a project will make it not too bad. I'm sure I'll try to tweek that cleat wall a bit however and go from there.

Yes mate it just looks like a black board and works a treat with regular chalk (even the old school chalk that I have a box of). I just wipe it down with a damp rag or cloth and it's good to go.

Its must be great feeling to get the cars inside. Its hard to put into words what a accomplishment that it is. I fully understand and great job getting it done.

A great feeling indeed Gerard, who would have thought of using something for which it was built. :lol_hitti

Always admired how you set your space up to not interfere with the vehicle parking.

Great job:thumbup::thumbup:

I didn't know you could put cars in a garage. That's pretty cool.

A new and novel concept Andy, even to me.

Another nice day today, bit of QFT time this morning, attempted to go for a bike ride. Loaded them all into the trailer, gave the tyres a quick squirt with the air hose and off to the local bike track. All good until I unloaded my bike to find the rear tyre flat as. Seems all those years of non use sitting while flat has taken it’s toll, so whilst not planned I ended up getting a coffee (read that as avoiding getting a sore ****) whilst wifie and kiddies went for a ride. So now I need to fix the tube in this. ******,

With yesterday’s garage vehicle install, there is just no way the workbench I scored a couple months back will fit, so I’m going to take it up to my parents tomorrow and stash it away for the time being. It’s too good a bench to lose. I've already got an idea in mind for it's future use that I thought of today, but it will be at least christmas time I think before I can make the arrangements to try it out.

Thank you GB for your kind words. I really glad we have GJ and that 2 people so far apart can have similar garages and be able to bounce ideas off each other. I do admit I would kill for that little work space you have. If you don't mind do you have any new pictures of overall sides, back and how new work area connects to garage?

Thanks Gerard, I'll finish getting it cleaned up a bit this week and get some new pics to show you.

A little QST today in-between what was the end of a busy easter weekend. Perfect weather the whole time which let things dry out a bit more from the weeks of reasonable rainfall.

Anyway, now that the vehicles are inside I thought it was time to start tending to their finish. Got out the orbital polisher and a few polishes I purchased a little while back.

Polisher is a Mint DAS6 random orbital polisher. My first time owning or using such an implement on a vehicle. This one is sold as a "beginners" model.

View media item 69957
And the polishes I used today.

View media item 69960
So not sure how well the pics will show but this is the starting point on the Hilux bonet. Basically dulled paint with lots of burnt in bits of metal from grinding too close to the truck so that took a bit of cleaning also. First up tried out clay baring it. First time doing that too. Just worked in sections and managed to get a result. Clay bar you can watch it pull bits of debris out of the paintwork, pretty cool.

View media item 69956
And after clay bar it looked like this…

View media item 69958
Then gave the orbital polisher a go with the Menzerna medium cut polish. I do have their heavy cut compound also but wasn’t sure I needed to go that deep on it.

So after a bit I had this…

View media item 69959
Next was the Menzerna super finish swirl remover resulting in this…

View media item 69961
And last step was a sealer and I used the Menzerna power lock polymer sealant.

View media item 69962
Looks great up close, probably hard to see in the pics. Still a couple of chips etc in it, but nothing compared to the state of the roof at the moment. Just need to get the rest of the truck done now. Hopefully roof chip/rust repair will happen soon and she'll look like new again.

Back to the grind for a couple of days as kids have are booked for a couple of school holiday program days.

Cheers GB.

Flats happen :(

Great job on the hood. You would make a big difference on the top too. But the leak has got to be stopped.

Too bad about the work bench. Maybe you could park your truck outside for just a short while?:willy_nil

Need another Saturday to fix the flat, you got any spare ? :lol_hitti

My Dad is going to use the bench in his garage for the time being. It really is a great bench so need to keep it in the family so to speak. I'd never pay the price they are new.

Thanks Andy

Little bit of tidy up tonight, just random clutter that migrates out of the house and finds the first horizontal surface area in my garage. :(

Looks better now.

Since I've been going into the tub I use (one of the black ones on the shelf on the back wall) for vehicle detailing a bit lately, I thought I'd move the contents into one of the available filing cabinet draws. Fits great. I'm currently using up some of the older stuff I've had for years then I'll get to try some other products.

Gerard, here are some pics that hopefully let you orientate yourself. When I get a minute I'll sketch up the layout, that might help also.

Great job on getting the cars inside. I too was wondering about the relationship of your work area to the garage.

All this vehicle detailing is making me think I really neglect my truck. Time to get some tlc products.

Vehicle paint polishing came out great. Looks like new or better again. You know what this means now…….you gotta do the whole car to make it match!

I'm just catching up Rod. On the clean up and two vehicles inside for the first time in five years. Your shed is very neat and seems well organized (I doubt that is ever much different) You come on as someone that doesn't do "messy' well.

The work you put into the bonnet shows. It really looks like it should still be in the showroom.

Well, gotta go bug some of the other "usual suspects" here on the GJ.

Thanks Shorty, it's good to have them in but the more I come into the garage I think I need to re-jig the lower section of the cleat wall so I can bring them further forward. I can't walk to the other side of the garage without opening the garage door or climbing over the tailgate on my truck.

Get some products and give your truck a clean, it will love you a little more for it. :bounce:

GB, I wish mine was as tidy as yours, well done.

1/2 Cup, it for sure gets messy and for weeks or more at a time sometimes. Much better if I can keep on top of it as it isn't that big of a space at the end of the day.

GB, the bonnet looks great.

Thanks Aaron. Might need your help in a sec, see below...

Hey I think you need a location break, how about spending a couple of those Saturdays (LOL) organising my shed.....Nahh, it looks nice. Makes me want to clean up a bit.

Terrick, I wish I had your shed space. Maybe we can get a cuppa in soon if the stars align.

Slowly been working on it RM, I'd say it's about 60% done at the moment.

Dan, thanks for the comments, much more to this polish business than I ever thought.

I don't think it will be quite showroom, but I should be able to get it tidied up somewhat. :)

As much as I don't like messy as such I still have a massive problem at my office at work - it's a disaster area. Gonna be a big skip there shortly so hopefully can get some control back.

All, sorry for the tardiness here again, been another busy week with a bit of work/school holidays and all that. Did manage to sneak away with the kids for a bit of camping at the end of last week and found a local place (Killalea State Park) about 35 mins away that was pretty nice and I could finally teach the kids how to make a fire, so they got their marsh mallows to roast. Was great QFT.

When we got back I managed another few hours with the polish on the drivers side of the truck. Clay bar for quite a while, incredible little process that I can only describe as like using an eraser - you can watch debris disappear from your paint work. Pics not fantastic but it's got some shine to it again after about 3 hours. I did a shorter day today back in the office and got home early enough to clay bar the passenger side this afternoon.

So rough pic of the finished drivers side.

View media item 70198
Now I need some tips on how to detail inbetween trim chrome items such as this. Anyone have any tips on how to clean out the crud ?

View media item 70199
Last thing this afternoon was repairing my bike tyre puncture. My 5 year old now knows how to find a leak and even did the repair as the kits are now just stick on things, no more glue patches. Will see if it's still holding air in the morning.

Cheers GB. :beer2:

GB,
The paintwork looks very smooth and clean in your pics. It's gonna be like a new vehicle when you are done. As to the cleaning around emblems, the best would be if you can remove and replace them but barring that you might have to steal some cotton Q-tips from the wife and get in there with something very fine like swirl remover or similar.

GB, I would use warm to hot water with car wash in a bucket and a very soft brush like a tooth brush or a paint brush and gently brush between the car logo. A friend of mine did use a toothbrush and tooth paste and it did clean the area up. I don't remember if there was any scratches. Maybe take the badges off and get some new ones of eBay. I hope this makes sense.

Thanks for the tips fellas, I didn't get to that yesterday but it's almost another weekend and I'll try it out. Hope to clean them up without having to remove the badges.

In the meantime I did find myself up at my parents place for a bit yesterday so dad gave me a hand to lift off the canopy (topper) so that I could get the back window area cleaned up and have better access to the roof to get it fixed along with replacing the roof drip seals.

This is 17 years of barn find development, actually cleaned off pretty well and the rubber seal is quite happy on the back window.

View media item 70232
And dug out the old tonneau cover that was still sitting where I packed it in my dads shed also, still pretty much brand new and hasn't cracked or shrunk.

View media item 70231
Left with the hard dried on adhesive strip backing from the foam strip that had been installed between the tub and the canopy.

View media item 70237
After a little experimenting this bug remover ate through it. Took about 4 passes and a little extra in a couple of spots.

View media item 70234
Just sort of lightly sprayed it on and spread it evenly with a plastic card. Let it sit for a couple of minutes and it scraped off in sort of layers.

View media item 70235
After a little clay bar at the end it's pretty clean now. I think the polisher should buff out that last dirty line.

View media item 70236
Anyway that side took about an hour last night, so another couple of hours shoud have it cleaned up. Still need to finish the passenger side polishing as I've only got the clay bar done so far.

Cheers GB.

Thanks Andy, definitely slow and steady stuff.

Tonights certainly non-exciting instalment involves working on the headboard adhesive removal...so started with this...

View media item 70237
All cleaned up (well the pic shows a little gum left to remove) and new press studs pop-riveted back on (they originally got removed when the canopy was first installed)

View media item 70265
Then got the tonneau cover buttoned up back as it was orginally (no pun intended of course).

View media item 70266
Just need to do the drivers side tub adhesive removal tomorrow night and hopefully the weekend will see a little time to finish up the remaining body cleanup and polish process.

Eucalyptus oil helps get the glue off! We used to use it for cleaning the paint after removing company decals from the vehicles. Seeing what you are up to makes me feel neglectful of my old crew cab. Even to the point that I had a 3x3m (9'x9') gazebo over it this last summer and the wind came up and it has rubbed the paint off a section at the front left side of the bed, that's going to take a bit more work. Might start on it this weekend while I'm waiting for paint to dry.
Good work.

GB your truck is looking good. I did the same thing with my poor Camaro. Only driving it back and forth to work for the past several years and giving it no attention. Of course now that I decided too start detailing it, the paint work is starting to go. Guess that is my own fault.

Is the camper shell staying off?

Great tip ! Just for the record though , toothpaste (some variation depending on the brand ) is VERY VERY VERY abrasive.
On the Mohs hardness scale , teeth (9) are just below diamonds (10) and tungsten carbide (9.5) , and harder than steel (~7 ish, depends) . So toothpaste is like , super duper heavy duty mojo cleaner , not "gentle" on your car stuff, especially plastic coated stuff ! Just sayin' !!

Good work.

Ah if only a bloke had a shed for his truck. Wish I'd put something over my old type3 VW fastback about 20 years ago too - too far gone now.

Terrick, I hadn't got to the eucalyptus oil yet, might give it a light rub over with some for last touch ups. The bug remover worked best if you spray a bit on and go off and do something else for a while, which at night was pretty much go ponder with a beverage for a bit

Thanks Bret, I have been keeping an eye on your detailing notes and supplies and storage cabinets ;). Might not have time to do the engine bay on the truck for a bit but it's not far off a 300k service (186k miles) so I'll probably do it then.

The canopy needs a clean up and I need to fixup the leaks around the windows on it which probably means some new rubbers. If I knew it was as easy as it was to take off I would have done some maintenance sooner perhaps (I was expecting it to be siliconed or sealed on and be a ****** to get off - never got to watch it be installed by the fitter so didn't know). I was thinking of looking into a tub liner first before putting the canopy back on later after the roof gets fixed up.

That ute is coming up nice - nice work!

Thanks hewey

Good point coolabah. Hopefully I'll get a toothbrush into the chrome bits over the weekend and see what cleans out the gunk the best. Possibly some medium cut polish would be a better option than toothpaste. Anyway will see if I can finish getting it cleaned up.

All, thanks for dropping by. Certainly not all that exciting goings on but slow progress.

I have not long just finishised getting the drivers side tub adhesive removed. Glad that's over. You can see a light yellow strip left where the adhesive tape was. Will hit it with the polisher and see how it fairs. Not really a drama as it will be covered again eventually when I put the canopy back on.

Great tip ! Just for the record though , toothpaste (some variation depending on the brand ) is VERY VERY VERY abrasive.

Now I know the Rockwell equivalent number (REN) for teeth. GJ is an amazing place!

Coolabah, in 1962 my first car had two bad cylinders. Turned out to be bent valves. Replaced with un-bent junkyard valves and used Colgate toothpaste to lap the 'new' valves. It was amazingly effective.

Hey I think you need a location break, how about spending a couple of those Saturdays (LOL) organising my shed.....Nahh, it looks nice. Makes me want to clean up a bit.

This might sound weird ( well , OK , it is definitely weird ... )
... But my mates all know to call on me if they want to organise their garage/shed. They know I will be there like a shot ! Its not like I am some expert guru or whatever but they look at my shed and think I am ?? All I need is free beer. Actually , not even that LOL :dunno:

Hah ! Bob , this prompted me to look at your garage thread and I posted a silly reply there ( my whole family had an "Ahhhh" moment when they first saw Forrest Gump... ) ... but I forgot to add, it is very critical that you flossed the valves after lapping ??? :willy_nil
