I didn't purchase them but thought they were interesting items at the Swap Meet I went to on Friday. The vise is a Chas Parker and the mower is a Sensation Mower Inc, model #G12.

I haven't seen one of those mowers in a whole lot of years. That old cast iron B&S engine is completely repairable and I'd think the mower deck is, too. Make sure when you put a belt on it that you twist it so the blade turns in the right direction.

Didn't get out much this weekend but I picked up a chinese socket set in a steel box on Saturday for $12 because I saw a couple older looking items mixed in. Grabbed what I wanted and sold the chinese stuff for $18 on Sunday. Here's the set I kept. It was from BOG mfg. out of Chicago. There is some good company history on Alloy Artifacts, but basically it was the brother of the fellow who started Western Auto. I put the pieces I got into a random wooden box. I made $6 and got a new set for the collection.

Do you remember the asking price on the Chas Parker? Looks like the swivel base is broke/missing?

I picked this up last week at a flea market for $2. Does anyone have any idea on the age? It still works and I'm thinking about sending it back to Snap On to have it re-calibrated. Do you think that it would be worth it?

You can check it with another torque wrench. I have one just like that. I inherited it from father-in-law. It is still spot on. I know he got it in the 50's but I don't know if he got it new or not.

We see this style marking a lot with tools that were used by the military. We have come across USA, USN, USAAC, USAAF and USAF. Usually done with an electric pencil or other etching device.

And it is usually whatever military presence was most common in your area. Sacramento was an AirForce town, so you would see a lot of USAAF or USAF maked tools. The Bay Area had a lot of Navy, so I would see a lot of USN marked tools. A friend who worked near an Army base in Texas saw a lot of USA marked. But you would see others too.

Thanks for the info guys, I'm in SE Michigan about 25 miles from Willow Run (WWII bomber plant) and 80 miles from Selfridge Air National Guard Base - so I'm going to assume that's their origin

These standard (no light indicator, no follow-up pointer) Larson patent, submarine-shaped, in-line handle jobbies were made for 1/4 (TQ-3), 3/8 (TQ-12, -50), 1/2 (TQ-51, -150, -250), 3/4 (TQ-352, -602), and 1-inch (TQ-1003, -2003) square drive from 1943 (although they don't show up in a catalog until Q/1945) to 1967. In 1968, they released the "new 1% precise" TEP-3, TEP-12, TEP-50, etc etc models.

As I explained to uncwstudent, there are a series of patents on the dial. If your torqometer has two patents - 2,312,104 (Feb 43) and 2,367,224 (Jan 45), it was made before 1954. If it has three patents, the two listed above and 2,682,796 (Jul 54), it was made after 1954. Snap-On owns several more torque measuring patents after that and before 1968, but they were never put into production.

Some standard models also have suffixes. These can also be used to confirm/narrow down the date of manufacture. I have a TQ-12-B, for example, which first shows up in the 1955 Snap-On catalog, succeeding (probably due to the third patent) the TQ-12-A model, which last shows up in the 1954 Snap-On catalog.

Unfortunately, I don't think the TQ-3 had suffixes, at least not reflected in the catalogs.

I do see something marked on the top of the handle on uncwstudent's TQ-3 though, that is not on my TQ-12B. I'm curious as to what that is.

I picked up this little lock by Corbin. Stamped USMC I assumed it was a footlocker lock, but a friend thinks it may have been for a sea-bag. I am open to guidance. The action is different from other padlocks. When the key is inserted it doesn't turn, but the shackle pulls up and turns the whole barrel.

What a locktease! That style of lock is called a push key. I have a few small ones made by Yale, but not one like yours :)

I picked up one of those a month ago. Not sure if its USMC or just US. Have to check tomorrow. I kind of like them.

That is now the 2nd one I have ever seen.

That's because they are fairly rare. These push key type padlocks are from WWI to interwar, not WWII. They were patented in early 1900's. I suppose they could be used for a footlocker or a sea bag, but I think they're overkill for either. I've seen 'USN' and also seem to recall seeing 'USN' versions out there marked with Navy terms for equipment cabinets or room names on a ship, underneath the 'USN.'

Snagged this from garage sale probably paid too much top and bottom $35.00. Guy put a desert storm camp paint job on it no clue why. Both boxes in superb shape.

Not much this weekend for me again.

Beach toolbox set me back 10$. More than I wanted to pay, but I had to have it since I very rarely see the green ones. I had also been looking for a smaller hand box, either to put in my truck or in my office at work. I'm thinking this one is going to come to the offfice.

The Lufkin tape cost me 1$ at a yard sale.

The Ridgid pipe wrench I'm adopting as no one seems to want it. I was at an apartment the other day with my boss and a friend. We were removing a washer/dryer set from an apartment one of our athletes is vacating.

I took this pipe wrench either out of my boss's truck (my #1 guess, about 75% sure) or my buddy's SUV. Boss says it belongs to my Buddy, Buddy says it belongs to my boss. Only person I know for sure it doesn't belong to is me seeing as mine is still here in my drawer, but if no one wants it, finders keepers.

Thanks for the link Lugz! I did check my lock: It's marked USN (Not US like I thought...)

I need to get a decent pic of it to ID it further...

My $10 find, all are craftsman and in beautiful shape. The holder has a spring in it so that all the auger bits stay nice and tight in the holder.

Ive got so much more awesome things I found but havent had the time these past 2 weeks to play with them first before posting.

Ah, got it. Next question: how well does it work?

Sent from my SM-G950U using Tapatalk

I had one and tossed it. It's bulky, doesn't always grip small nuts and I'm not sure if the shaft is even hollow for long studs.

It's in the same family as the Gator Grip universal socket.

Definitely - and like AA, it's not being updated anymore :(
Luckily we have a few facebook groups and the people there are a wealth of knowledge.
I was just about to post the exact opposite, jeff! Unlike AA, they are open to reading comments, answering queries, and considering external research, at least in my recent experience. I just contacted Scott Caley about an error I noticed (not pertaining to a padlock, but a military marking), and I got an email from Scott and Mike Pitman thanking me for the input, and they updated their site.

Look at BB, it's only September and he's already trying out campaign slogans for his 2018 Garage Sale Thread Head run!

They certainly made a good first impression with me, jeff.

I hit a little pay dirt at the early early bird this morning. Nothing special about either of the boxes. The tray compartments in the S-K box remind me of a tackle box, which I didn't know S-K made. Maybe it's a toolbox or general utility box and those are for small parts. The stuff in the green knickknack box has some goodies in it, though, including Channellock brand dykes, duckbills, and slipjoints, old Smith & Hemenway RED DEVIL brand dykes, a few sockets - BOG, Vulcan (my first - somebody remind me who made these, Williams? and when?), and an odd Hinsdale (11/32", 4-point), a Hinsdale DOE wrench, and a Hinsdale 9/32-drive sliding tee. Coolest thing in the lot, though, was Pebble Plomb duck bills. Everything from one condo-living retiree just looking to get rid of stuff he no longer needs. The moral dilemma (uninformed seller, informed buyer) lasted about the time it took to pull my billfold out of my back pocket.

........ Vulcan (my first - somebody remind me who made these, Williams? and when?) ..........

Still trying to figure some of that out myself.
I think - Vulcan was originally an independent brand that was loosely tied to Williams/TRW. Sometime in the early to mid 70's they were fully absorbed by Williams. The label died out not long after SnapOn took over.

Thanks, jake. I can't even find another photo of a Vulcan socket, so if you got 'em, please post 'em, and I will post a photo of this one later. It's not plated. It's a 1/2-inch drive with a very pronounced chamfer, a deep broaching, and a 6-point 3/4" opening. Completely smooth (no knurling or grooves), straight walls, with a detent hole at the base.

Probably an impact.

These are the chrome 3/4 drive. The tools are identical to Williams in every way. I tend to think it was simply their truck brand but did not have a long life. Why sell the same tool in a different name?

Yeah, I miss your camera too, 'cuz those pictures ****, and I don't mean in the good way! :lol_hitti

Does the name start with a triangular \\// but closed off at the top?

And doh, yes, it is an impact. I have no need for them, and admit to being fooled into thinking this was just an unusually robust early thick-walled 6-point.

The only Vulcan tools I own are Williams/Vulcan metric combo wrenches. I've never even seen any other Vulcan tools in the real world.

I've got a set of Vulcan impact sockets and an old Vulcan tool chest. Didn't know there was any interest in Vulcan. I'm a tool user not a tool polisher, so they are dirty.

Jake, I picked one of those up this weekend. A 10mm/12mm DOE.

Nice. Maybe we need a new Show Your Vulcan thread.

Well, this is a discussion forum. Never sure how to take that when people mention bandwidth. :dunno: I try not to over post in this thread. Even when it seems like I hold my comments so not to over post, I'm still right up there. Thank you Outlaw though for leading the way in posts.

Pictures of Sunday's flea haul.

Some Proto angle wrenches.
Pliers by Craftsman, SK, and Klein. I was super excited to find the bent nose SK mixed in a box of pliers and suprised it was still there there. The name is worn away though.

Highlights: Cornwell 3/4 gearless ratchet was only $15 and the International Forge Aluminum pipe wrench thrown in for $5 more.

The speed black wrench has a Gearwrench socket welded to each end. I first saw one of these in a shop a couple years ago, and though it was homemade but the worker with it said its not. Pretty sure I found them for sale retail online back then too.

Screwdrivers- Mac, Matco, Snap on torx, Sk, Powrkraft, little red enderes flip.
3 Vaco drivers. Vaco and Mac screw starters. Snap on square brake wrench, Craftsman mirror, Blue Point ring pliers.

Sockets- Kobalt deep, Craftsman C series in rough shape, a Mac, three Bonney. A mixed rail of 1/4 craftsman, taiwan, snap on, matco, mac.

Ratchets- SK 1/2, Sparta 3/8, Stanley indexing 3/8, Walden 1/4 (parts ratchet) the walden stuff often seems to be broken for some reason.

Wrenches- Metric doe Powr Kraft and Williams/Vulcan. Mossberg bicycle wrench.

My real suprise find I mentioned the other day are these two unfinished williams wrenches. I usually look through most old DOE wrenches to see what they are. Noticed this one still had some flash or webbing in the open ends, then saw the diamond W! Then I found the combo too. I was saying to the vendor I cant believe these made it down to Florida, they're from my neck of the woods. Then he proceeds to tell me he had a whole box from another vendor he sold! These things always seem to find me.
