Very nice honza! That middie looks pretty rough with that rust. How long have you had those assuming those are yours?

I aquired all of them within the last 2 years. The middle one has some rust on it, but they are rather rare, so I snapped it when I saw it. I just havent had time to do anything with it except lubricating. The other boxes are in great shape.

Posted all this in the vintage toolbox thread, thought I was posting it here. Picked up the yellow/black CM top box on MBC roller last week for $55 from Offerup. Then, due to the obsessions here taking hold of me, I traded my 1 year old Husky 40" tall cabine to my buddy for the red/gray stack and a red/black roller cab., which I will repainted all three red/gray. Now I have a good start on these I will find one more to equal the tool storage I had in my 40"!, It had no style tough.

Surprisingly this was still up forsale for a few days before I went off and saw it. The seller was the original owner and it was from 1975. It is in nicer shape than the photos show. They are very well built compared to the current offerings. Sadly I did own the matching 10 drawer top but stupidly sold it a year or so back.

I bought that same 10 drawer top back in 73. Made the Sears guy bring out three units before I got one that was perfect. Used it a lot of years. When I finally got my Snap-on box I sold that Craftsman to someone on here. Shipped it across country, out to CA I believe. It was a really nice box.

Great find and nice price! I don't know the answer to your question about the chevron emblem but I've got gray & red 12-drawer top & bottom born 01 76 with it.

Got one like this from a buddy 2 weeks ago dated 2/76 with the chevron emblem, maybe that will help date it a bit more. Jeff

Nice find! Fortunately, the 10d top chest is relatively common. I just picked up my 4th one and I've passed on many others that were priced fairly, but I was unwilling to buy because I'm cheap. The most I've given for one is $50 and the cheapest was $25. They are out there!

I am sure I will run into another one. They seem to be around but not that common. I did run into the buyer a while later. We both have similar tastes / needs in tools so we run into each other selling or buying. I proposed buying back the top box I sold him. He just laughed. Oh well. I just need to find some other tool he needs more!

Now I need to figure out how to get the stickers off. A hot air gun comes seems to be the preferred choice.

This is the top box now. Red is kinda bright. Roller cab will get painted red/gray, too. Any know where I can get 2 drawer pulls as mine are broke off. Thanks

Hope Zeeman isn’t listening. He had one hell of a time bringing one back from the dead just to have a 10D. I notice in my day they weren’t as common down here but seemed like at times I could find a 3D bottom roller on every corner. LOL

You got that right on the 3D rollers!

As for the 10D top chests - maybe it's a regional thing, but there seems to be one listed at least every few weeks around here. That, or maybe I'm really good at spotting them [emoji2]

So YOU'RE the one that picked that one up. This was for sale up in Santa Barbara a few weeks back, correct?

I was planning on whether I could justify driving up there and back in one day, but the add disappeared before I could figure it out. Of course the Montecito mudslides the next week made that irrelevant (not to downplay what human tragedy it was as well).

Heat gun followed by $0.40 of Goo Gone worked pretty well. Still needed to use a plastic scraper carefully on the hard adhesive with the Goo Gone.

As expected, since the stickers have been there a long time the original paint is faded compared to the paint under the stickers. I will probably live with it as-is.

The previous owner riveted the "Speedwagon" emblem on the tool box. It does not appear to be related to RE Olds' original company or the band REO Speedwagon. Any thought on what it is from? Given the choice of the emblem or seeing the pop rivet holes, I may leave the emblem in place.

Cratsman tool box_sm_2.jpg

The tool box has the model number (65037) and the patent number (3393951) stamped in the front right pillar as shown.

Cratsman tool box_sm.jpg

The patent was by James R Sulentic and assigned to ‎Waterloo Valve Spring Compress in 1968. Waterloo changed their name around that date because the 1970 Sulentic patent (3489479) for the bottom door design on this tool box was assigned to Waterloo Industries. These are Sulentic's only two patents. From a few minutes research, Waterloo industries was started in the early 1900s by Nicholas Sulentic. I suspect James R Sulentic is part of the second generation.

Vinceg101 - yes, this tool box was in the Santa Barbara area. I still am surprised no one snatched it up before I got to it.

I know considering he was willing to deliver it within the SB area.
Well, the Ventura/SB are was engulfed in wildfires and then, as I said, right after the ad dropped, the mudslide happened. So SB was kind of cut off from LA for a while (it still is).

Glad to see it went to someone who appreciates it and is bringing it back to life.

I picked up this 6D Top Chest #65262(?) from Jan/1968 last week and have set about cleaning and repainting it.
Decent shape but rusted and the paint has oxidized pretty badly. The removable tool tray is missing but it does have the key!

Not sure what I'm going to do with it; maybe it will go into a raffle in a few months.

Of course, the real prize was yesterday:
CqbpuWxGR3RNJ63

May/1974 Craftsman Commercial Stack
10D Top Chest #65284(?) & 8D Lower Cabinet #65034(?), 34" wide and almost 60" tall.
These things are very rare and hard to come by in decent condition. They also are beasts built like tanks; very heavy. As a point of comparison, according to the Sears Brochures, these sold for over twice what the grey & red 27" chests & cabinets of the same vintage cost. (According to the catalog, they're over 40% heavier; after moving it yesterday I believe it.)

Doesn't need much more than some cleaning and drawer guide re-lubrication and it's as good as new. It's already spoken for and will be on its' way to a friend's house in Phoenix soon enough. Seems a waste to let it go, but he needs it more than I do.

Follow that right side pillar down to the bottom rail and you will find the build date (listed in four digits, first two the month, last two the year).

I had a chance to buy that same combination about 18 months back from an antique dealer of all people for $199. They are the nicest tool boxes Sears ever made in my opinion. The paint was in really nice shape but it reeked of mildew. So I ended up regretfully passing on it.

Pretty impressive how much "fade" has happened over the years.... I doubt you could polish the rest back out to match but it might be possible?

If you want to rehome that Speedwagon emblem let me know. ;)

2 months go I got serious about getting some vintage tool boxes and now, all because of the red/grey disease here, I have traded and bought six pieces.... 3 original red/grey and 3 red/black. All have been repainted by me, all slides lubed and all drawers have new liners. Some have keys, most don't. You guys are right about one thing, this is definitely addictive! I have all I need now, but I'm still looking to upgrade the rollers with garage doors to 9 drawer rollers. I probably have less than $300 in everything, but a lot of work. Anyway I'm very happy with these boxes. Thanks to everyone for the info provided here.

Nice Ledman! Not trying to be critical, rather asking because I've been trying to figure out what comes closest to the Craftsman red paint. In your red & gray wall, the set on the right has a more vibrant red that the other two sets. If I had to guess I'd say maybe the set of the right was freshly painted while the others look like they might be original. Is that correct? What brand/color did you use to repaint the set on the right?

Thanks!
Mike

Actually all three were painted with the same paint the guys here used...hammertone antique pewter and sunrise red. The right set looks brighter because there is a floodlight right on it and the left set is under a shelf hanging from the ceiling. I still need to paint all the drawers in the center set, so they are the original faded color. The paint is rustoleum. Jeff

Jeff,
Thanks! Did you paint the entire cabinet? I'm wondering how many cans of spray paint that would take?

Yes, I painted all of them. Iirc it takes about two cans of grey to do a two piece stack and 1-2 cans of red to do the drawers, depending on how many coats you put on, I did 5-6 coats per drawer, not counting primer if I sanded the parts to bare metal 😆. Also had to fill in some dents and weld up some holes.

I could have made myself clearer. 1-2 cans to do an entire rolling cabinet? I figured it would take a lot more than that.

That's 2 cans of grey and 2 cans of red. That's roughly $25-30 per stack. Toolboxes in better original paint probably won't take as much paint to cover, but all of mine had crappy paint and I sanded some of the boxes down to bare metal and shot them with self etching primer first.

Yes, James was the second generation. My father worked there for many years and knew the family.

Tool_scrounge, Waterloo has made the Sears boxes for many years, if not from the beginning. Waterloo has made boxes for many other companies over the years, including Snap on.

Didn’t the Speedwagon emblem come from an automobile?

My dad died a month ago 😢. I've been going through his tool box that looks a lot like the first picture. My mom tells me take whatever you want everytime I go to see her. I've been taking anything that says Craftsman or Stanley. Have come across some very interesting things. Is this a good site to post pictures to find out what it might be? I'm sure my husband is tired of me asking what is this.... I want these tools because all's I remember is him working on something. I especially love the ones he has engraved his last name, initials, or a series of numbers on. My husband thinks the numbers may be his badge number from work or something. would love to know if that is correct.....

Yep. I picked up a '46 Delta DP220 drill press and a '48 Delta 14" band saw last year. The guy I bought them from said an elderly neighbor had given them to him years ago. They both have the original owner's social security number etched on them. I have no plans to remove them.
