Man, if you and Rickster are both out of the game I really should have tried to get out more the last two years.:willy_nil

I can only shudder to think of what has been picked here in Metro Detroit and not shared on GJ.I'll bet we've left a bunch out there. Here's to hoping the picking is ripe in 2018.

Another good weekend for me, and now I have workbench space to show and tell with.

First the GF texted me on Friday about an estate sale she stopped by at. She had already pulled out all the USA pliers and a bunch of SK lectrolite wrenches and asked me if the P&C set was good, I asked her what was inside and she said it was BE craftsman! All but 1 socket is non BE and the set was $10 and the rest of the tools were $5.

Then today I went to another estate sale and picked up the early =V= craftsman ratchet, Nicholson USA files including a chisel/file combo, a bunch of wrenches, a craftsman BE 1/4" breaker bar, and a stanley handyman plane all for $9

The second estate sale was a private one where they were doing 50% off. Thats where i got the adjustable wrenches, serpentine belt pulley wrench, proto phillips screwdriver and fuller robertson screwdrivers, 1 gal gas can, craftsman allen keys, hammer, and a penens 1/2" speed handle all for $6.

Then sitting in the backyard was this beauty that was originally $30 and was now $15, a Craftsman heritage logo cantilever tool box. Amazing piece to me.

Overall I spent $45 on the entire thing plus a $2 slushy for finding the box :rocker:

Nice finds! the P&C drown in that thread will want to drool over the box, and the BE Craftsman in the Long C craftsman thread! That Heritege box is in incredible shape!

I bought this thing for 5 just to buy something. It is a weird clamp / vice. The handle has teeth on it so you have to press the lever to be able to turn it out.
What are the dimensions? And am I seeing things or is it made of bronze?! The composition (if it's bronze), the ribbed construction, especially around the lowest tooth/jaw, and the bolt piece at top makes me think welding, but the wheel crank and teeth certainly don't. I'm curious now!

Lugz, it is cast. Definitely heavier than it looks. Operates just like a quality vise would. 9 inches by 9 inches. Square bolt in the handle that looks to be held in by cast tabs?

I spotted a Sunday only estate sale in Alameda, CA on Craigslist this morning so my wife and I checked it out. The tools were mostly Craftsman, which is fine since that brand helps pay for the vintage tools I actually collect. It was a family sale and prices were ridiculously low. Including my wife's kitchen and book finds the grand total was $10.00. Here is what we came home with. I had a couple of Craftsman hacksaw blades that went onto the hacksaw. I found a Dunlap punch for the Dunlap collection. The Wiss tin snips looked good after cleaning and sharpening. The Craftsman vise grips were in good condition.

hi all, just getting around to posting this. friday i was heading to the golf course and drove by a estate sale sign. there goes my chipping and putting practice time. everything in a detached garage, first thing i spotted was the little tub of stuff (miss matched assortment of wrenches), the big snap on was sticking out had 5.00 sticker on the tub, lady said 5 for the lot. us, germany, japan even spain. blackhawk, penens, vlchek, hazet, kawasaki, trucraft (spain/japan) and a few other's. found a bunch of old papers/handbooks an OLD map and some military pins. lady said i could have the box for 5.00. the guy was retired military and nothing is dated after 1945. 1 of the post card's are from "hamburg-amerika linie" (not misspelled).

Having a tough time finding tool guy sales here in PA.... Did manage to find a guy with a shipping container of tools and tool boxes last year, but he was a bit strong on prices. Still I spent a small fortune there over two days. I really miss those Detroit area estate sales......

Thanks "Jim No Garage" & "Outlawmws." The cords for both of them were shot. I want to replace them with vintage cords. I will hook up a regular cord for the fan just to see if it works.

You can buy new 2 or 3 wire cords that is modern wiring that is wrapped in cloth! Check out sundial wire ! They have tons of colors and types.

jusridin: Thanks for the extra pics. Whatever that thing is, it's really friggin' cool.

Don't get ticked off at me, but do you have a magnet? :) That really looks like bronze to me. Bronze is deceptively heavy. Heavier than iron. But it's not magnetic. It can be difficult to tell the difference between cast iron and cast bronze. You can shut my stubbornness down for good if a magnet sticks to that thing. If not, my money is still on antique grounding clamp for large industrial construction projects.

Also, what do you make of the piece I have circled in the thumbnail below? What's its purpose? Is that a serrated edge on the bottom?

Lugz, I was pretty confident it was iron until I read your questions. So grabbed the closest magnet...
It's iron. Definitely iron.
I appreciate your curiosity undoubtedly. I do enjoy a good challenge and obscure tools. This site has got me researching and learning a lot. Not just tools but everything lol.
I'm not sure if I call this a vice or a clamp but I am sure we can figure it out.
The top piece is a very poorly cut out piece of steel that I assume is not original. It looks like a hanging device

Hmmm, interesting looking device. I hope it can be identified.

Went to the Sunday flea. Nothing too grand today. Picked up this Proto tote for 5 bucks.

CB and I looked at it last week but it was full of tools. I decided to ask about it today, and the seller emptied it out so I could take a closer look. It came with a sheet of galvanized steel (not pictured) lining the bottom. For that price I couldn’t say no.

Picked up another S-K Custom 3/8 ratchet, and an older heavy duty Channellock plier with the cutter built in, stamped Meadville. Nice usable shape other than the grips. Also, a Starrett punch, Sargent chisel, and Butcher chisel.

Thanks guys. Gotta love that Flying Lady logo.

What I’ve learned is the Custom name was applied years ago as part of their tool line called Peg Pack, which hung on peg hooks in individual retail packages. Nothing much custom about it, though the finish is different. Not so high polish. I know, the name makes no sense.

Mysteries are one of my very favorite things about this thread, and why I think it should cast a wide net. Between RagtopsTA's little ratchet, and this clamp think its been a good few days too.

I have a lead on a small proto flying lady box. A little rough, but I’m ok with that. I hope to pick it up this weekend.

Nice score on that tote! What is a butcher's chisel?

I am completely out of my element here. Never seen anything like that vise jusridin picked up. I've only started getting into tools in the last year but out of the mouths of babes as they say. jusridin said that piece of metal that Lugz asked about looked like it was for hanging something. Between that and looking at the teeth of the jaw it's clearing meant to be hanging down. Could it be for attaching to a barn rafter when you needed it like for butchering a hog? Like I said I'm out of my element but thought I'd throw that out there. Look forward to the mystery getting solved.

You may be heading in the right direction (hanging something from rafters), but I'd guess it probably wasn't for hanging meat/carcasses - in my limited awareness of that process, I think it needs something much more spike/hook-like to go through the meat.

I'm leaning towards the hanging from rafters (or maybe I beams)..

But look at the "hooks" close: some have a lip, some do not, but do have a 90 deg "gullet" possibly suitable for the thickness of an I-beam?

And why not matching hooks on both sides? :dunno:

Two match on the other side, but the "dynamic" had extras as well as the one so high as to be not very useful? :headscrat

After listening to everyone I am trying to rationalize everything and different scenarios as for practicality. If it was hanging how would you adjust the crank? It could be attached to a block and tackle. Outlaw has a great point about the different teeth on the jaws.
Here is a thought, the handle is not normal for a vise but I have seen similar handles that lock in place on a trailer hitch ?

On the way into work this morning, I caught a flash of color as my headlights swept through a turn at an intersection just down from my house. My brain immediately correlated the flash to the "Channellock blue" entry in the ol' cerebral database and ordered a U-turn from the hands and feet. After safely parking and waiting for a timely red light, I retrieved this:

64dd2c6cbda981f222f85511a83ad890.jpg162a512f65bc763484f3813d43df9b0f.jpg

A pair of 351S lineman pliers with the little dogleg for twisting wire and with a spring to hold it in the open position.

Unfortunately, the time it spent in that intersection took a toll on the handle grips--they are cracked and worn from being repeatedly run over on sub-freezing temps. However, they still have most of the clear coat on the exposed metal, and no other rust, so I think they are fairly new.

We've talked about the "Found along the road" scores; what about "Found IN the road" scores?

JUS: WELL DONE SIR!! I have a few of the old hitch balls that look like they have removable tops, but i've never seen one of them come with that piece so i probably left it on the floor or bench not knowing what it was. my guess is though if I would of seen something looking close to yours i would have grabbed it though cause i think it's COOL.

I wouldn't say by myself, you all made me rethink it's application. Thanks all!:rocker:

But you DID solve it! Well done!

Sort of ironic as in my mind as it went from lifting, to hanging, to pulling! My first two assumptions were 90 deg out! :spit:

And now the "odd" teeth make sense!

If they had left a ball in it, there would never have been any question! That needs one of the old (now illegal) "carriage bolt" hollow balls to be period correct!

Edit: This deserves to have the pic at the right angle! :see:
