Drivesitfar i picked those up at an estate sale in boise not to far from your neck of the woods. The handles are in excellent shape the cool thing is they were full of tools and fishing gear that i subsequently sold and offset the cost of the cabinet. When i won the bid the auctioneer asked which one i wanted and i said all three. You could here a groan throughout the auction goers alot of people wanted them.

Big Wheels: yep those are solid cabinets and I wish the handles were made out of metal or something a bit stronger. that said i picked up the good pair I had with a greasy auto repair shop that was in business for 50 years and those handles were not broken. nice score if the tools inside paid for your cabinets too.

ALL: i've got a few guys in my area that pick up these old government cabinets and throw them up for sale. they look quite handy, but i'm a little too cheap to pay retail for them. plus i have more than a few others so don't really need them.

you tell me if you think they might be handy or post yours if you have some.

BC: do those 3 cabinets come apart cause it looks like they'd work better side by side? if you paid $150 for all 3 and with tools you did great cause we rarely can find one for less than $100 around here in the PNW.

when i email my Iphone pics to myself to save on my laptop (yes i know i should be using the CLOUD) they come to me sideways too and i have to rotate them before i post them. i think there might be a setting on my Iphone to change and i'll get back to you if you are posting from an Iphone or Ipad to help you post pictures upright. i hear Tapatalk might help when posting from your phone, but i don't post from my cell phone cause my fat fingers are too big and #'s and letters too small for my old eyes. good luck and hope those cabinets work nicely in your shop and post up pictures when you hang them if you do please.

Camaro: i agree with Outlaw that your big box is a KEEPER. i've got the CHEAPER VERSION of that maybe with the Hamilton flat files, but i'd love to find one like yours someday to replace it. i can't say i've even seen that style before and is it 24 inches deep or do tell if you know or can measure it.

ALL: MERRY CHRISTMAS!! and it is a WHITE CHRISTMAS here in the PNW cause it snowed last night.

That’s a good price at $50 per cabinet. The contents would be a bonus.

Drives, That's a nice sturdy looking cabinet. I've never come across any with sliding glass doors unless they were floor model bookcase types. Looks like it would make a good shop manual cabinet or display case.

Yes. I have 5 of them similar to this one. Great place to place a shop tv or audio where remotes work and dust stays out.

I do have a beauty to show, home made, (please don't call me names in you mind...lol)
But don't have them to post just yet.
Reason being, ............well cant blame the cold too too much today, and tomorrow,
lets see, need a good excuse here, .....lol.....lazy,.......yeah, a little, too fat,........yeah, a little..... naw,..........( lost 30 Lbs, BTY!!), Promise to get them posted , (yeah yeah Anthony, garage Journal has heard that before.....)
Truthfully, I can get a few pictures later today, but they won't be the best, as I need to move things around,
But can describe some...............Shop made, Got off craig List, for $5.00.
Wrote them and said, heck, for $5.00, I'll take it. As luck would have it, She still had it. Saved it for me. Went to pick it up, Super Super nice Nice !! lady, and Her Husband too.
(not at all hard on the eyes if I might add................. NO don't go there now!! her, NOT HIM.....LOL..................just kidding!!!)
About 18 to 20 deep, I'm guessing about 32 long, and as about as tall as a bottom tool roll around.
Guy MADE this rig, No welding or anything, used like that angle iron with the holes evenly drilled in it.
and then covered in aluminum sheet metal, about as thick as a road sigh,
anyways, then the front has two doors that open with shelves inside,
and has a drawer on the one end, The narrow end, if i'm saying that right.
pretty sure he Re-Purposed the drawer from something else.
her dad had made it, and they were moving IIRC to Florida.
I think he did a really nice job on it.
I mean, not store brought looking, could tell it was home made, But Still really nice I think!!
Whole Family was so Kind, Loaded it in my Trailer for me.
She Goes, "Oh you drove a long Way, Please, just take it.
Thought that was very nice of her.
Will promise to move some things around today, and get a few pictures.

BUB: pretty funny story and looking forward to PICTURES OF THE GOODS (not her :bounce:).

FJ: I'm betting that cabinet's new paint had something to do with your skills. looks great. WELL DONE!!

RM: if it wasn't a 90 minute drive each way i'd go buy it and then figure out a spot for it so stay tuned, but it most likely won't be around or is probably already sold for the $50 asking price.

ALL: while I'm trying to vacate one of my 20x20 storage units i'm looking at and have been buying a few cabinets. GO FIGURE??

i've come across this one that i'm also not sure i have any room for, but i do like the drawers.

Bub: ok I waited 24 hours. :dunno: I guess i'll wait a little longer??

ALL: these 30 drawer or bins in these 2 cabinets are a bit bigger than the 18 bin versions i usually find. i don't know exactly where i'll put them, but they are now mine thanks to another GJ member grabbing them for me until i can head down his way to give him something i picked up for him a few months ago.

yep we do that and it's a great excuse to see members that you might not see as often.

Thanks Riley!!

cheers

Drives,
That United Delco cabinet is awesome especially with the pull out drawers. Looks to be in good original condition and good paint. If the price is right that would make a perfect flip. That's exactly what someone with a GM garage theme will want. I did that with a similar parts cabinet (minus the drawers) and easily found a guy to buy it for a nice profit and he was happy to have it hanging in his garage of GM products. Can I ask what they were pricing it for?

RM: I bought it maybe 3 or so years ago and it's been sitting on shelf waiting it's turn to get hung, but i have racks on the walls or big cabinets already so sadly i think it has to go. i too like the drawers cause i think they are a bit unique and if i recall correctly it has some slight damage or maybe rust on one corner. that said it opens and closes and all the drawers work so if somebody handed me a benjamin i'd probably hand it to them.

ALL: anybody know a good way to move a 550 pound cabinet that is 5 foot wide, 2 foot deep and almost 7 feet tall? the company i'm buying it from has a fork lift to load it on my trailer, but all i have is a pallet jack and a pallet jack lift that probably wouldn't help me and i'd be unloading it by myself. no i don't have a bridge crane or a gantry, but i probably should buy a gantry some day.

I own a 4 foot wide and 6 foot tall version of it and i rent a $20 uhaul and lay it on it's back on a 4x4, strap it in and tip it up pretty close to where i need to put it and i've moved it by myself maybe 4 times now. with this one being 5 foot the Uhaul i'd have to rent is a 6x12 and not the 5x9's and it has a ramp so i'm trying to think it out. sure i don't NEED this cabinet, but i do like it and could find a spot for it. any ideas??

cheers

I'm all about the slide it off the end of the trailer and tip it up. The weight is on the trailer till you tip it up on the pallet jack.

Been there and done that. :pimpflash

DFA: i'm with you, but with the ramp i won't have the angle to tip as easy, but that's the way i'm leaning.

having a 7 foot tall cabinet on a slope that weighs 500 pounds on a pallet jack doesn't sound like a wise move to me. maybe some of you have done it and have some safe way to keep it from falling? ropes, winch, straps or ???

DFA: that's ok cause i understood you that you thought pushing it out of the trailer down the ramp was maybe the easiest. it's just on that long ramp i'm almost picking up the entire weight of the 550 pound cabinet to tip it to the pavement so i could then use my pallet jacks.

i've seen guys use their pallet jacks for shorter very heavy items pulling them up or down a ramp and was just asking if maybe i hadn't thought of a way to rope a tall cabinet off so it wouldn't fall if i somehow was able to roll it down the ramp on my pallet jack.

having a few guys to help might be the best way, but if anybody else has a method i haven't thought of please post cause it could keep me from having it fall on me or save another member/reader.

one of the 4 moves when i tipped my current 4 foot wide 500 pound cabinet off the trailer it almost went over too far and i had to move quick to keep it from falling on the ground. one thing you don't want to do with these HUGE CABINETS is think that they won't crush you cause i bet they could if you are not careful.

thanks for the tips!!

cheers

Drives, you sure have a nose for these old cabinets and what not. Where do you keep them all?

I see in some of your photos a bit back that you have 3 or 4 more standard metal filing cabinets. I read that a lot of folks don't like them, but I'm curious as to what you store, how you organize, etc etc, items in them, and you're overall satisfaction using them for shop storage. Photos always appreciated.

I have a lead on a number of matching ones, but not a ton of space so I have to a plan before moving forward.

250: I'm GETTING ORGANIZED and part of my issue is that i start to get ready to set up and organize a cabinet and a (better in my mind) vintage one or one that might work even better shows up and i'm not super quick at swapping them out.

i'm not a fan of the regular 4 file drawer cabinets, but i do have 3 fireproof ones in that style i keep some stuff in. i'd probably get rid of those but they are full of supplies, huge drills and hand grinders and such and i think one is full of big vises.

if you need storage and have the space it's a good cheap way to start a metal style and maybe you can paint them or replace them as you find better ones.

i'm getting ready to start a thread in garage gallery called DRIVESITFAR IS GETTING ORGANIZED that should have a lot of pictures and some of my DIY stuff and maybe a few of the members BSing a bit and maybe talking about something that might help others too.

thanks for asking and I wish i had a 60x120 garage/shop, but I don't so now that i don't think we are going to move so i could build one a third that size i'll have to ORGANIZE my 9x15 portion of our 2 car garage and the 2 good size sheds and get rid of my storage either to a member so i can use some of the stuff at his place or just sell it and maybe play some golf in between projects.

BTW the old school 2 and 3 drawer fireproof file cabinets or the well built ones make nice drill press stands. i've got a 10 drawer under my old Walker Turner DP that is plenty stout too.

cheers

1/2: WELL DONE SIR!! you have skills and that was a very nice gesture handing down to Andrew even though i know you've got some other pretty awesome cabinets and benches. thanks for sharing and I (we) all wish we had some of your skills cause if you built that 30 years ago imagine what you've learned how to do since.

ALL: While i'm still thinking how to move that big 500 pound cabinet that is 5 foot wide, 2 foot deep and 7 feet tall i'll post up a few of my little ones.

1) I love these old Lyon 18 bin or drawer cabinets that are 34 inches wide, 10.5 inches tall and this one is 11 inches deep. these also come in 17 inches deep that I have on my wider 36 inch steel bench.

2) these parts bins come in a bigger bin I'll post a picture later and that big bin holds 5 of these. this style comes in several sizes and these are fairly big at 18 inches wide, 12 inches deep and are 3 inches tall. i found some NEW OLD STOCK ones that are grey and even though i'm a VINTAGE guy I couldn't resist swapping these with the older ones that were a color i'm not fond of and I think one of the old 5 has a missing clasp.

anyway swapping out a few wire nuts (yes i probably have enough to wire a new home if i had one) i thought i'd post them and i'll post the cabinet that has the roll out trays when i get it tomorrow or soon.

You should easily get $100 for that Delco cabinet, actually more given its features. If I were close I'd give you the Benjamin myself and turn around to sell it and still make a profit. That's a desirable cabinet for the right garage theme. If you have not used it in 3 years then move it on to a good home and get some fresh cash to continue the hunt!

As to moving your tall heavy cabinet, when the seller loads it I would have it laying on its back flat on your trailer. Then when home slide it off the back of the trailer onto dolls or your pallet jack and move into final position before you stand it up. Use any sort of lifting aid or hoist that you can buy or borrow to save your back (and other body parts). Think out how to use leverage, mechanical advantage and less friction to your benefit. It may be a little slower than brute force but is a lot safer. Use rollers, levers, etc in one form or another.
I personally keep an engine hoist in both of my garages just for lifting and unloading. They are cheap enough at HF and the legs fold up for better storage. I also keep a foot pump hydraulic lift table in my main garage so I can slide heavy items onto its table right off the back of my truck or trailer and then wheel into the garage. Sure these things take up space to keep oil hand but when loading and unloading alone most of the time they are worth it to me. Best of luck with that big one.

RM: thank you very much for your insight on how to move HEAVY ITEMS and of course sharing the tools you own and use that help all that good thinking.

i've been looking for a nice lift table for a while and i found a $1000+ version for a lot less in a local option, but another guy wanted it more than i did and i wasn't going to to pay more than 1/2 the value for a 10+ year old one (I do like the older ones), but i might just go to my scratch n dent JET guy and pick up one of his new ones cause i certainly don't mind a few scratches.

i might move the 4 foot 500 pound version first to get an idea of how the bigger one might move cause it's been about 3 years now since i moved it and it's a lot of pushing and grunting and hopefully i can still move it around.

ALL: for those of you moving heavy items i've seen many guys use these at their big shops and they work great really good if you have smooth floors.

JUS: if you happen to pull the drawers out to clean your cool cabinet or move it please take a few pictures of the empty frame cause some of these are built very different.

ALL: speaking of very different frames I have at least 3 of these 33 drawer Cole brand cabinets (white one in picture) and i picked up this 27 drawer black no name cabinet last weekend cause it works nicely for that space.

as you can see the black one has a lot less metal inside than the black one does which makes it lighter so i won't load it up as much, but it should still come in handy.

Drives,

As first reported in the 2018 Garage Sale thread here, I picked up this P&D Manufacturing Company ignition parts cabinet at the flea market today. P&D was located in Long Island City, NY. I am guessing 1930’s or 40’s, but I have not dated it precisely yet. I didn’t take a side shot, but it’s deeper at the bottom than the top, tapering up in the back.

LUG: nice looking cabinet and sort of like the only hanging cabinet i own. nice find!!

ALL: these little nuts, bolts and small parts cabinets are pretty common, but thought i'd show one that i'm letting go cause i don't NEED IT.

it actually holds a lot of stuff and all the plastic drawers are there too which isn't always the case.

anybody else want to share their shop's metal cabinets they use and maybe show a few pics of the insides so we can maybe get some better ideas about storing stuff?

thanks in advance!!

Missing 2 drawers (not 3), I covered over the lower corner with AL to keep any critters out. Also shortened the legs by about 10 inches. Nuts, bolts, washers, cotter pins, springs, spacers, plugs, screws, auto hardware... 100s and 100s of lbs of hardware.

WQ: it looks a lot like SHAW WALKER made it or is there even a name on it? any idea how heavy it is empty? NICE!!

ALL: speaking of Shaw Walker cabinets I'm not sure i posted these that are stackable and i needed to play cabinet tetris cause i already had the height of the bench in place.

i think they'll do fine here.

Lots of those plastic storage bins here - some in the pic and a bunch more in the garage. Second pic is all NOS replacement electronic parts for Tektronix test equipment. Doesn't count all the boxes, baskets, cans, bottles and various tool boxes holding a plethora of "parts". Doubt it will ever be totally organized.

Thanks. Candidly, I had never heard of P&D before, but I knew immediately that it was genuine 1930's or 40's vintage garage category, in very good condition, with very legible markings, and so did the seller. After some quick searching at home, I have discovered that they go for $200 to $400 on various on-line markets. You know I keep my prices to myself, but suffice it to say that I did not pay that much.

Alchy: if you've got time to visit my new personal organizing thread and post those i'd love to have them on it. i personally like the Equipto 18 bin ones you own, but that wall of stuff is IMPRESSIVE. WELL DONE!! the link for my thread is in my sig line. thanks in advance

Lug: yep i'm not one for bragging or complaining what i pay for something cause it's value has to do with me and me alone, but i usually try to buy used stuff for a little less than it's worth. also even FREE can be too much for some great items if you have to pay storage and move them several times so i'm learning to JUST SAY NO to some stuff.

Lugnutz, That P&D cabinet is very cool and I am not surprised at that price range if you sell it. I would have guessed the same due to it's rarity, remaining logos and completeness. Cleaned up, that will make a very unique cabinet in someones display or garage. It's the kind of piece I'd expect to see in a museum diorama setting that portrays an old time garage. Nice find!

Thanks, rmalkow. I started a separate thread hoping to capture the attention of someone who might know more about the company and its history and products, who might not read this thread, linked here.

Picked these metal card files up for free tonight. I figured at that price I would find something to do with them.

I’m contemplating drilling some holes and mounting them under my bench like drawers, but I don’t think they are sturdy enough. So they’ll likely just set on top.
