Thought you guys would get a kick out of this.

I get a text message with picture from my wife this morning which read "does this make you *****?". While the picture is loading naturally my mind races to why type of **** picture my wife just sent me. While I wouldn't say it's ****, I cannot deny it turned me on a little. :dunno:

007: as funny as your parker comment is I have to correct you cause I think I own three Parker’s that are best to **** and or broken.:bounce:

Jon: your bride sounds like a keeper. I have a client that bought one of my old 1945 Wilton c1’s for his bumper vise and it had a cool little hideaway mount that would make most us smile. Except maybe Joe cause it’s not a parker.

I passed up a small swivel base Reed this morning with a Defense Plant Corporation tag on it. Wartime, and I've been hankering for a DPC-tagged vise, but the seller wanted way more than I was willing to spend on it. I snapped a photo of the tag for posterity. General Motors in Linden, NJ.

Arizona is unfair for Joe.---This thing has got to be done right.:bounce:

So the Doc had a big Parker Vise collection.---Who knew?

I stumbled across a Craftsman 5152 yesterday afternoon and the price was right. I believe this is a rebranded Rock Island 593. I have seen lots of the Reed made Craftsmans, but never one of these. Anyone know about them or if they are uncommon? I'll post some pictures later this evening.

Pretty ingenious XJS.

This is pretty cool. Good job!

Thank you fellas. I couldn't bring myself to let either of the two vises be thrown away by my workplace of the time. The ws6 that became the hitchvise had been split in two somehow. The whole main casting had broken. The rest was near new condition so I built a housing for it to fit my receiver for trail repairs and such. Its pretty heavy but it balances right at the back of the anvil which doubles as the carrying handle.

Excellent use and repurpose of a broken vise!!! I have a Charles Parker with a broken body, but excellent dynamic jaw, spindle, main nut, etc! This could work!

I must have missed this spat. Shucks I could be the ref, I have experience. I am next door to Nebraska and can be there in a couple hours. Must be over the Parker vises since Big D does not like them and tells us every chance he can.

I know its the dreaded Anvil Vise but I picked it up for $15.
Its not too far gone and I am going to let Joe have a go at this and make it the nicest Cheney #30 out there.

You are correct, those are made by rock island, from the 1930s to early 40s. They're collectable as most Craftsman's are, with average availability IMO. Nice pickup, post some pics.

ALL: first of all I never said PARKER DIDN"T MAKE A GREAT OLD VISE. i said it didn't hold up as well to being BEAT TO ****. that said i've yet to find a pristine one in the wild and if i did i'd probably buy it.

also i got a few PM'S about Joe's post about "I'M DEAD TO HIM" and i hope he's joking, but we don't talk that much. if he wants to meet in the MIDWEST I think we have a road trip there this June or July so happy to see if all that iron has beefed up his muscles cause i'm not in bad shape for a 62 year old (Bday is this Sunday)

i just got back from the Oregon Coast where my bride and I celebrated our 30th anniversary. I also made time to see a couple GJ members and had dinner with one of them and his bride so it was a great 4 days. if any of you haven't been to the OREGON COAST and are wondering if it might be worth your time I celebrated my 60th Bday there and now our 30th anniversary and we could have went almost anywhere and that's where we picked.

I saw a couple nice Emmerts that i hadn't seen ever that had 3 sets of jaws and swiveled maybe even more than the Chinese Wonder Vise so i think i need one now.

sorry forgot to take a picture, but if any of you own one and want to post up a picture please do cause it's a KEEPER.

JOE: I'm your HUCKLEBERRY!!

Marty: here's some more information about your vise and i've got one or two of them and even though they aren't a very good anvil they are cool so looking forward to seeing what you have Joe do with yours.

Drive, I know that you know that I was just poking a little fun and not trying to poke the bear.---I've been guilty of mischievous humor and pranks since as far back as I can remember.---Got me in a lot of trouble in school too.---I'm pretty sure that all of us here on the Journal are fairly civil to each other so Joe was probably just yanking your chain to, but me being who I am could not resist the op to stir the pot a little.---Sounds like you took it in stride and rolled with it.---Thick skin is an extinct virtue this day and age.

NJ Marty: Here's some more information about Cheney Anvil and Vise. The article is from an 1884 issue of Building Age. The location of Fulton Iron and Engine Works in the caption of the engraving would put it approximately in the lobby of General Motor's world headquarters today.

p.s. Just in case you weren't already aware of it, the pin holding the swivel jaw is tapered. Some Kroil and a few gentle taps with a brass hammer and you should be in business.

Drives; Congrats on your 30th anniversary and upcoming 62 Bday!

I can only speak for myself but I have a feeling that others here also would agree me that if this town (thread) had a Mayor/Sheriff, that would be YOU as you are a man of high integrity and finest character and have our sincere respect.

As for all the silly horsing around, well the Mayor/Sheriff was out of town (in Oregon) and the cowboys (including myself) got rowdy and decided to stir trouble :D but meant no disrespect and it was obviously in jest and fun (and that includes Joe's first comment). I also believe that we have now milked this joke and driven the Parker horsy to death now so that should be the end of this fun

CRS: Thanks for all the detailed information, it is educational. I specially found the article very interesting. As for the drawings, looks like a fairly complex vise but might not be the sturdiest tool that was ever made but never the less is very novel and definitely a collectable.

TW, That's an interesting vise! Can't recall seeing one exactly like it. Looks like its intended to be held in another vise use with those back jaw extensions, but the wing nut might be in the way a bit....
