Made by J.P. Danielson. Very similar to the DOE wrenches they made for PENENS/Fleet after the Plomb acquisition. They are date-coded, like most J.P. Danielson products. The tricky part is the font. One style (older) has serifs, the other doesn't, and the difference is a decade. They would make a neat jeep or GMTK set, but in 7+ years, I have never managed to put an entire set together.

Managed to scrounge these up at a local goodwill type store. Challenger and proto pliers, Blackhawk 11mm wrench, Williams 9/16 socket, and Stanley USA ball peen.

The items in the picture of the top of the box are pieces of a Starrett 85 Extension Divider. Go look at a complete set. You have most of the optional pieces there. Alone they are worth what you paid for the box - total larceny!

I have one of those rules which came with my Dad's Gertsner in 1941.

Well I FINALLY got to go out shopping in 2018. Hit the second day of an estate sale that mentioned tools, in an area that has lots of farming/history. The place was pretty picked over, but then one of the workers started pulling stuff out of a new shed! I grabbed this blacksmith's post vise for $10 before it even hit the ground. Also picked up a Cincinnati grinder in rough shape for $5, and a couple more small items thrown in. I really liked this tiny Stanley handyman ratcheting screwdriver.
All of these go in the project pile because I am working on a number of other projects first. I did not find any markings on the vise. Any hints on where to look?

note: the screwdriver is a Yankee No2H Handyman - not sure why i was thinking Stanley

Great find RagTopTA! I have the same box that my Dad bought brand new in the late 1930's / early 1940's. Before he passed it on to me he told me that Gerstner only made those leather-covered boxes for a couple of years during that time frame.

One stop today, No tools, moving sale. I see a knife blade in a box of utensils, and pull it of and it's a Henckels! Then another, then another... 7 all told, only one is not Henckels. I also grab a Jack Danial's Whisky Glass (These branded glasses always seem to be top quality, and do demand good prices on Eprey), A timer, for SWMBO. I continue wandering around then there is a Kife Block; missing one (I surely have it on my hands already...) but also All Henckels!

Nothing else worth buying, so I ask for a price and she goes and gets the other lady from the house.

she looks them over, and I'm thinking "try to keep it to twenty..."

"How's ten dollars for all?"

Little lesson learned:
Henckles International = Imported I check a couple of ours and they are H International made in Thailand. Well, that's better than China. (To me...)

Turns out three of the 9 steak knives are also made in Thailand.

There is J.A. Henckles International, and sold at a discount,

Then there is Zwilling J.A. Henckles, and made in Germany...

The block set I got sells retail for 100. The same set made in Germany sells for $400!

Lesson learned; I still didn't get burned, and while we don't need more knives, all three kids are getting setup... Most if not all of these will go to one or more of the kids after many if not most get sharpened...

So everything (relatively sharp) here is Henckels International, except for the butter knife that along with the whisky glass is headed for the camp set.

Duddly Many BS vises are simply not marked. Those that are its often the mounting plate, a few on the side.

And you **** on the deal!

A few drops of oil inside the Yankee is likely all it needs to feel line new inside.

Nice find on the knives - I agree it would be a whole lot better if German-made. For future reference, a "quick and dirty" way I use to identify without studying too intensely is that the Asian-made Henckels have only one figure, while the German-made Zwilling J.A. Henkels have two figures a.k.a. "the Twins".

I spent 2 hours cleaning up the basement this morning and decided I am going to take a break and head to a local sale that looked to have some cutco knives. It was about 30 mins away but I needed a break and headed over. Knives were gone and rest was some old furniture so I left empty handed.

It was only another 30 mins to a big sale in Stanten Island. I had some time to kill but as I got to the bridge and saw the sign for $15 toll I started to regret my decision.

It was the third day of a sale with lots of tools. Looked to be half a dozen tool chests overflowing in two sheds a garage and basement. When I took a closer look it was mostly no-name China **** plus a lot of abused Klein screwdrivers and pliers but I came all the way so dug around a bit. I did find a few gems:

I didn’t know what to expect for price. Locks were marked $5 each and all the staff was male (usually that means tools are more expensive). He said he could do better on the locks so I grabbed them all and filled up a bucket of the rest. When I got back he didn’t bother to look in the bucket, just asked what I had the said “how about $10 for everything”. I gladly handed over the cash and was on my way home.

I was knocked out with a bug of some kind last night and was feeling much better this morning, but still a little woozy. SWMBO is out today for a Continuing Education class, so I killed the whole morning inside until I finished lunch and decided I felt good enough to go out and start installing the new garage doors on the new building.

On a whim, I check LetGo on my phone right before I head out the door. I punch in my usual "tool chest" search, hoping for a dirt cheap Snap-On box as always and I see...this:

The ad was 17 minutes old. I jump on the text link and confirm with the seller that the price is indeed for the whole stack. Its a fifty minute drive but I offer come right over. I'm there inside an hour.

I was met at the garage door not by the young lady in the ad profile picture but rather an older gentleman, probably her dad. The guy complained that he had just moved the box from his old garage and the movers had "just tore it up--it was in much better condition just last week!" It was a little banged up here and there but it was in fact a real Snap-On box and he had the keys. KRA-650 top box and KR-655 bottom, both made in '86. Sold for $300!

As he was emptying out the drawers, he had other tools for sale (mostly Chinese stuff) but I did bite on the Blue-Point AT500B impact wrench with a Snap-On GLA12A 1/2"-to3/4" socket adapter for another $25.

He helped me load the beast. After we tipped it back over tailgate and started to push it into the bed, the top lid fell open. No problem--I jumped up in there and locked the lid closed. I paid him, thanked him and headed on my way.

When I got home, I managed to get it unloaded by myself, although just barely. I spun it around, taking pictures for this post, and then I pulled out the keys to open the top lid. No dice--the cylinder turned but felt like it was banging into something. The top lid and central drawer are shut tight. I hate to lay it down flat again, but that's how it locked--it may be the only way to unlock it again.

I have a Zwilling J.A. Henckles knife. Well made product. I'd be interested in your assessment of the Thai (and China?) versions after you readjust any irregularities. I thought they were all German; buyer beware!!!

I picked this up Friday night off CL. Somebody was ahead of me to get it Sat morning but the owner was ready to sell Friday night.

I already have two other Delta 14" wood bandsaws (a '57 and a '48) but this is my first wood/metal bandsaw. Based on the serial number it looks like it was manufactured by Rockwell-Delta in '68 in Tupelo, MS.

The owner stated a buddy of his got it in a school auction and gave it to him years ago. He was only getting rid of it because he wants more resaw capability. I told him he could just get a riser kit for it but he said he'd rather get a new one. It runs fine but just a tad noisy. Sometime this year I'll get around to changing all the bearings and give it a good cleaning. I think the wheel covers definitely need to be repainted. I'll rewire that mess on the outside there. Need to figure out what that looked like originally.

I paid an extra $10 for appx 16 blades, most still in the boxes. The whole deal set me back $85.

Oh yeah, he gave me some pieces of lumber too. He was retired Army, Special Forces. Also, retired from oil & gas industry after that. Anyway, he gave me an 1" x 6.5 "x 5' piece of Purpleheart that was part of a load he'd shipped from Panama when he was there with Special Forces in the '70s or '80s. He said "you can't even get Purpleheart that good now if you wanted to". Based on what my local Woodcraft sells it for I figure that board is worth $30-$40 and better than what I could get if I tried. Also, gave me a similar sized Eastern Red Cedar board, a slab of Mesquite and the board I posted as my last two pics. Can anyone tell me what they think it is?

I was there two and a half hours and it seemed like fifteen minutes. Great guy and thoroughly enjoyed touring his shop and talking wood, woodworking and life. All in all a nice haul and a nice evening.

The CRAFTSMAN hacksaw is out of my niche, and may be common for all I know. Funky sliding tubular design with a thumbscrew. EDIT: Looks early 60's to me. I'll have to look it up in the cats later, unless someone knows for sure.

It's in the 1955 Craftsman hand tool catalog. It's NOT in the 1960 catalog.

I have always admired the shear ingenuity of those cars and the courage of the guys who built them. For now I will be their caretaker and keep them from rustling away or going the crusher.

Years ago I went to check out a cool 1960's go-kart with a fiberglass Formula 1 style body and found an aluminum Korean war era drop tank hiding in the guys bamboo grove and picked it up for $100. The family used to have property on the Red River and it just floated up one day.

I met up with Rileysan today while at the northwest drag racing association swap meet in Vancouver ! Not a ton to be had in tools but I did find some extra metric husky USA wrenches ! These will go in a box for my son when he is older! Did find a couple of wire brushes to use in my tool clean ups! Also did find a war time p & c 3/4 drive socket, 3/4 drive ball joint socket for old Chrysler products, p & c wrench and a crown top drill bit set ! Also scored the ridge tool company chain wrench! You know it is old because it is not labeled because it does not say ridgid. Ithink this was the least amount I have ever bought at a swap meet and that always makes my wife happy [emoji51]

Also scored these 2 different 4 way wrenches a few weeks ago for $2... Williams and Bonney

Yesterday I passed a roadside tool sale. Picked up a 1/4 Craftsman breaker bar and a Martin 1” to 3/4 adapter for $5.

Made an impromptu stop at a yard sale and they had a few tools. Grabbed the Klein driver and Snap On hook for 75 cents!

From a moving sale on my lunch break Friday.

Swing line staple guns and plenty of staples,one stapler made of aircraft aluminum, the other is for stapling wiring. A large oil filter wrench, spark plug tester and a couple pair of pliers. The seller was still bringing boxes out and I saw the SO Tourqe wrench sticking out.
All for $10.

A neat torque wrench, just adjust knob to setting, except not sure if it's working.

Second stop I picked up a Estwing framing hammer, prob my 7th or so, a long Mahew chisel and a long screwdriver.

Saturday hauls. Wife insisted that we stop at flea market ( to get fresh strawberries) . Found the soft grip SO right off for $1, the small driver and pliers $.25 each.

Hit a week old barn sale that Three Bay went to on Friday and probably wiped out, LOL. It was pretty well picked clean, but grabbed couple cans of ZEP PLS, fuel line, a oil filter for my Club Car, door operator switch, brand new oxy/acel welding tips and some other misc.

I found a couple of family run estate sales on Craigslist this morning so we gave them a try. The first sale had a Dunlap vise, pliers and a few more items.
The second sale had old toolboxes to pick through so I grabbed quite a few old tools. My wife found some vintage pieces with some local history in the house. Here are a bunch of tool pictures. The first two pictures are of the first sale tools, the rest are tools from the second sale. The DOE wrenches are Hinsdale and the last picture is a North Bros Yankee screwdriver. Spent $15.00 at each sale!

Wow thanks for the info! I have no use really for that stuff but was sure wondering what it all was. Its also got a couple of other things in a drawer... Post card for American school of something and Broc about using twist drills ect.. cool stuff

Cool.. Hard to gauge scale of these--they look small? From the location of the pipe--I'd say they were a swing-type ride of some sort.

Man the finds in this thread are great!! And only a month in! I hit the small flea market again this morning and there was hardly anyone there... Determined to find more good stuff.. I scoured every booth I normally walk by. I found a few wrenches, a Bluepoint hammer in really good shape, and a Craftsman soldering gun still in the box with book and the Sears price tag still on it! Anyone now what this little R wrench is ?
