Rag, you have yourself a p&c dbe! If it is civilian it will be labeled p&c. If it is military it may not have a logo and the part number may appear something like n-90 or another odd part number

I got my sockets and wrench cleaned up. HINSDALE sockets and the DBE sure looks like my other P&C's..... heres the numbers on it. also a pic with two of my other DBE P&C's

Don't think I have ever seen a part number like that but if you post it in the p&c thread I am sure others will be able to assist with identifying it ! I want to say it may be a fsn (federal stock number ) ?

It's a tractor wrench, I think mostly used by farmall, and maybe IH. If you google the part number you should see a few threads on it (I have one too)

Scored this junk at an auction sunday. 23 bucks total, but the tap and die set is the only value. I grabbed the flat for 7.50 thinking the pliers would be nice ones since the rest of the tools were snapon there. I was wrong.
There's a craftsman USA adjustable, Pittsburg diagonals, unknown, a Lectrolite 206, and a pruner. Staple gun and 2 full boxes of staples, and a tape measure. All usable, just not what I was hoping for.

All of these are rusty, so besides wirewheeling, how do you guys clean up tools like this? Is there a trade secret? I don't worry as much on stuff like this, but a chrome wrench with rust spots? How do you clean that up without ruining the chrome?

Nice find on the ace super set!

Answer... unless it's just surface rust (which that isn't), then the chrome is already gone. No matter what you use to clean it will be bare metal. Once you get the rust off just oil it and move on...

Thanks. Yeah my main concern is preserving any good coating. So removing rust without taking off more chrome than necessary. I just wirewheeled the pliers and they look and feel much better. Oiled them and they're in their new homes. Now for the ace set....

Outlaw- sorry to disappear! I went down with the creeping crud for a week. Finally got some pictures of this thing. It's 1.5lbs, only about 5 inches long. No makers marks or stamping on it. Neat shape, kind of a square head. Maybe some kind of light metalworking tool?

That looks more like a body dolly or some other kind of metal shaping tool to me.

Sent from my SM-G930V using Tapatalk

Kind of looks like a heel dolly with a handle.
I wonder if it was made by Atha or Stanley/Atha ?
It has that look.

Yup, if you have the space, MUCH easier to work the dolly with a handle! Plus, the solid handle give the dolly more mass.

I ought to put some handles on my duplicate dollys come to think of it.

Yep, as others have said, a Farmall or IH wrench. I thought it looked familiar--I found one on eBay a year ago and posted it on the DBE thread:

That's an oldie, Outlaw!

I like the old, dedicated wrenches from the early days of machinery. I bought this DBE with similar roots off of Ebay last week. It traces to a P&C-made round shank wrench for an early Farmall tractor. Supposedly, there were clips on the side of the tractor for it and it was used for adjusting implement nuts and bolts. The box ends have the famous P&C conical cross section. I found an entry by Twertsy on another tool forum stating the same conclusion and I agree.

P&C Farm all 350370R1, round shank, 1-1/4" x 1"

I got no secret.
degrease/grime first.

unplated ferrous things, usually go to electrolysis. it seems to work the very best on cast. can eventually remove paint, pro or con depends.
post treatment; scrub in soapy water without letting it dry till residue is gone.

Evaporust works great, doesn't hurt most finish, and has some of the easiest cleanup. it cost $20/gal, but lasts a long time through many reuses, can add h20 to compensate for evaporation.
post treat; rinse and lightly scrub wet, or don't for a dark look.
molases is probably the same, but slower.

Vinegar, $2 gal at discount store will hurt chrome after awhile.
post treat rinse well and dip in baking soda water to neutralize.

wood ash water solution, stir it up and throw some tools in. it does more on the side the stuff settles on. works a lot like vinegar, but isn't acidic, sometimes leaves bare steel more shiny.

All thes things may also require some scraping/ chipping/brushing during the process. They all are less time and effort intensive that physically removing it all, as well as leave less marks. you will want to deploy some sort of rust preventative pretty much right away. I use wd40 a lot.

Which brings me to last technique, penetrating oil on a brush or nitrile glove and scrub. especially with sockets that arent too bad, spray wd40, grab with glove, and spin both ways with impact for a minute. done.

Here is one part of the vise I got the other day just out of the electro tank, scrubbed for about an minute with a toilet brush, an part of the anvil hit for 10 seconds with brass hand brush.

Now I have to decide between paint and a more bare finish.

I always wondered how it felt using a left handed scissors, being left handed in a right handed world I've just never had the chance to use a pair. Maybe I'll just buy one and see if I enjoy cutting more.

The only thing I can tell that is different about the scissors is the angle/contour that the thumb hole is at.
Otherwise the make-up of them is the same as the other scissors I have around the house.

I expected them to be laid out in reverse (mirror) of a right-handed pair.

Man, one of these days I've gotta see if my local Habitat ReStore has tool deals like some of you have been finding. It's on the opposite side of town where I don't go very much, and only open for limited hours 3 days a week, so it hasn't worked out yet.

To be honest, this is the first deal I've found there. Usually the only tools at the two ReStores near me are broken weedeaters, etc. very few handtools and most are junk. I found all three in the same bin without any pricing. I'm thinking they had just put it out, and the girl at the counter just wanted to go to lunch.

I would not make a trip just to go to a ReStore, but if I happen to be driving by I will pull in and give a quick walk through.

The stuff constantly changes just depends on what they get in. But I would bet there are people that hit that place daily to pick the best things. For me it's just random luck if I find something.

Most of the tools I come across in my ReStore are ancient cordless beat-up cheap (like B&D) brands that don't even have a battery. Same for hand tools. However every once in a blue moon I'll find a couple good little things.

One time they got in literally like a couple pallets of sponges. I was able to get a huge pack of those blue ones (that don't scuff) for super cheap, and a couple smaller packs of green... Likewise one time they had a similar amount of tape... masking tape, shipping tape, duct tape, etc... I guess they must get some of the stuff a vendor or walmart is clearing out...

Very small but quality haul at my early bird flea market this morning.

The 12" crescent-type adjustable wrench is a J.P. Danielson BET'R GRIP with a 1943 date code. The WWII GMTK's had a pair - 8" and 12" - and this one will make a nice brand-matching mate for the 8" JPD I have at home. I have a matching pair of Williams Superjustables in a kit I am trying to complete (my fifth) right now. This pair will give someone a couple choices.

The non-reversible female 1/2-inch square drive ratchet is a Braunsdorf-Mueller. They were an antique- through vintage-era mfgr in Elizabeth, NJ, most famous for their bent-tube wrenches. (Not sure if Vlchek bought them out or licensed the design, but Braunsdorf-Mueller and Vlchek are the only two mfgrs I have ever seen with that style wrench. Thread here.) I didn’t even know they made drive tools, and I've definitely never seen this ratchet before. I am guessing 1920's. l'll post close-ups in the ratchet thread after I clean it up.

A Kennedy 1022 hip-roof steel toolbox, decent shape, surface rust, no rust-through, though the original paint has been lightly painted-over. It was filled w/a variety of stuff, partial list:

Red Devil glass cutter
Misc. Better-quality hole saws, various sizes, Milwaukee
paddle spade hole saws, various sizes
various drill bits
a few cold chisels and a punch
Brainerd solid brass cabinet hardware NIB, hinges, hasps
4" angle brackets
plastic wall anchors
lead wall anchors
multiple packets and bags of screws
dremel friction cutoff discs, two packages
Skil saw arbor nut wrench
long double allen screw drill bit extension
RCA plugs/adapters, NIB
and a bunch more stuff, I don't recall w/o opening the box and taking notes

A good deal at $4 from a yard sale. Looking on ebay and Amazon, the cheapest new one I saw was $170 for the same box. I'm gonna try the Simple Green treatment to see if I can remove the rattle-can paint, which is pretty-thin. Any suggestions on duration of time to use it, or particular method, besides just wetting it, and letting it sit?

you ****! :rocker:

I have used oven cleaner to get off the rattle can paint, but it is pretty touchy. A little too long and you have bare metal. I do a few minutes (3 to 5) and then clean it with paper towels and hose it off. You can always do more ... but once the paint is gone you are done for good.

Sometimes you're always a day late and a dollar short. Other times you're just ten minutes late. After meeting a guy to buy something off CL I stopped by the ReStore. As I was walking in here comes a woman walking out with an 3-drawer orange metal box in her cart. I seriously thought about following her and asking if she'd consider selling it to me. I'm not that bold and I'm sure she wouldn't have. Anyway, this is only the third time I've been to the ReStore. Well, I'm checking things out and in the Hardware section there's a 3-drawer orange metal box! Yep, the twin got left behind luckily for me! So some days you're just in the right place at the right time! I've seen these here and elsewhere. Happy to find it. It will definitely be well used. Funny thing is sitting right next to the box were some cheap flimsy plastic bins for $2 each.

I can't recall what company these were associated with. Anyone recall?

Last pic posted is what I was buying off CL. They're for my son-in-law's birthday. I couldn't see myself paying $60+ for a set of screwdrivers even these. But at $30...no problem. He likes old and used stuff like me so he won't be bothered a bit that I picked them up off CL.

Nice start to the weekend.

PS Like EOC_Jason said I wouldn't go out of my way to go to the ReStore but I was passing right by it on my way back home. This might cause me to start hitting it a little more often though. :)

Sometimes you're always a day late and a dollar short. Other times you're just ten minutes late. After meeting a guy to buy something off CL I stopped by the ReStore. As I was walking in here's comes a woman walking out with an 3-drawer orange metal box in her cart. I seriously thought about following her and asking if she'd consider selling it to me. I'm not that bold and I'm sure she wouldn't have. Anyway, this is only the third time I've been there. I'm checking things out and in the Hardware section there's a 3-drawer orange metal box! Yep, the twin got left behind luckily for me. So some days you're just in the right place at the right time. I've seen these here and elsewhere. Happy to find it. It will definitely be well used. Funny thing is sitting right next to the box were some cheap flimsy plastic bins for $2 each.

Nice orange box story.

The screwdriver set looks like new and is even still in the original package, so it should hardly require the recipient to like old/used stuff, unlike most of the finds in this thread. ;)

No good sales around here this weekend, probably because of both weather and Mardi Gras parades. So good luck to you guys!

A Kennedy 1022 hip-roof steel toolbox, decent shape, surface rust, no rust-through, though the original paint has been lightly painted-over. ...

Great find driftpin!

Super solid Buck 112 with sheath, 33' Stanley Leverlock, and an outdoor flood light fixture. $2.15 for all

Ughh! I lost my 110 a couple years ago, but every used/abused one I see is priced near retail. I’ve dropped into the local Restore a couple times but never found anything I wanted, much less at such a great price.
