CF nice finds! The green Stevens Walden box you don't see every day, and it looks like yo got at least one ratchet for it?

Folding hand crank is cool also, probably to wins something up as it would be a one direction crank...

Not much happening around here tool wise what with the weather being crappy still. Not an estate sale or garage sale find but my boss is organizing stuff at his house and getting rid of stuff so he asked me if I wanted his dad's old tool box from his job as a machinist. Said sure if you don't really want it but are you sure since it was your dad's and all ? He said nope he wants it gone.

So a freebie, Union oak machinist chest full of a bunch of stuff I have no clue about but will eventually sort out everything. Boss's dad was a machinist back in the day in a big shop in Syracuse NY. Guess they did some pretty specialized stuff for NASA, the Navy, Pratt & Whitney, etc. Always like the history aspect of stuff.

Thanks. No walden ratchet, but there were some sockets for it. The folding crank is interesting. Looks home made.

I think most of us would be in heaven with a freebie like that! Congrats!

I could only dream of a score like that. And open up and show us the drawer contents.

Good to know, chrislehr. I'd like to use them, but I'm a little nervous about further wearing off the logos. I'll probably still use them, but will handle them gently.

Meh. Lathe tools are only as good as they are long enough. My logos are in better shape but there is not much sense in preservation sans usage.

Found a late opener and a TOO nearby it, his afternoon (One this AM was a complete bust):

Greenlee 710 Stud punch: This one gets flipped

attachment.php

Cents 50 for this busted hatchet. It was crusty rusty, but the wire wheel took that off. She asked for a buck and a half and I just put it back; she "countered" with what I paid... :pimpflash

This will become Tent stake puller V2. For less than a buck, why not? :D

Perhaps it would help to apply a clear coating of some kind? (polyurethane, lacquer, clearcoat spray paint, ...)

Picked up a set of body hammers, dollies, and slappers. Looks like Fairmont, not super impressed with the castings but I think they can be cleaned up. And the price was right.

You're right, Fairmont castings can be rough. Especially at the seams. But a little cleanup, and redressing the seams and they are top notch tools. Good find, nice set.

Only one iffy sale listed two towns over this weekend. No pictures in the listing, so I slept in.

In all, a good day!

WNYflyer, Suckage ensues - Buy your boss lunch...

Thanks guys. The boss is a good guy, perhaps the box is for following him to different jobs/companies and making his life easier

Box is in pretty good shape thought the leather handle is pretty worn. Shots of the contents. A mish mash of stuff such as telescoping gauges, depth gauges, parallels, punches and who knows what else from the usual companies, Lufkin, Starrett, Brown & Sharpe even some Craftsman stuff. Surprising not much in the way of the usual micrometers and such. Always wonder if the guys give away a good portion of their stuff to co-workers when they retire. My maternal grandfather was a machinist also and had surprisingly minimal machinist tools at home after retirement. I would have thought he would have had a lot more at one time when working.

Oh my f!@#$%^ god that is a great score. Is that a set of adjustable parallels in pic 3? And a good selection of other machinist tools. I am truly envious.

Pawn shop visit found this little thing. 1/4" drive Central Pneumatic. The tatty rubber cover said "Professional". It was in the bottom of a random bin
and I asked how much. Reply was "20 bucks". My reply was "we both don't know if it works". Pawn shop guy said "no problem, there is a compressor over here". He hooked it up and no-go. Brought it back and said "sorry, no good".
I asked how much is the project price. 5 bucks. Sold. The further back story to this is had bought a 1/4" ratchet from HF and it crapped after 3 bolts, so I have been sorta looking for something. Got it home and it was pretty crusty inside.
About 3 beers later I had it cleaned out and it runs pretty good. Pretty strong too, but if I have to complain about something, it does not "clock" quite right.
I will figure that out eventually.

THAT is the coolest thing I have seen on here in weeks! Some kind of oil/lube dispenser.

Um, there are only three places on planet earth you can wear that:

(1) An ashram in Uttar Pradesh
(2) The set of the 1980's TV show, "Full House"
(3) A Furthur (or RatDog, etc) concert

:lol_hitti

Also Mardi Gras and art shows. I would wear it!

LOL at an estate sale taking a year or more. Sounds like that family insisted on doing it themselves instead of hiring an estate sale company, and has been paying the price of having to hold onto that property all this extra time. The only sale I went to this weekend was a 'moving sale' of a retired couple supposedly trying to downsize to move to a beach house, but they turned out to be similarly unclear on the concept, insisting on trying to sell their stuff in various ways that make it much harder to get it out the door than it needed to be. Meanwhile they're stuck sitting on a $300k+ house that they've had on the market FSBO for nearly a year and are still nowhere near ready to move out of.

Judging from the quantity, I bet that's the Time-Life Home Repair And Improvement series! I have a nearly-complete set of those myself that I got a similar bargain on last year. Good stuff.

I honestly don't blame the guy for not engaging an estate sale company. This was thousands of square feet of wall to wall, piled to the ceiling auto parts, tools, consumables, machines, etc. from his father / family over the years as well as his father being a huge auction buyer. None of the estate sales in these parts that I've come across would have the expertise to price / catalog this much stuff relative to the space it was contained it. My original post on this place can be found here:

https://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6287929&postcount=525

The pictures are PB and not available anymore, but to give you an idea of just how much stuff was there...he had apparently been selling for months, and within a few minutes of walking in I'd already made a deal on a 1 HP block grinder for $40. Nine and I probably made 20 other posts each about scores from this place, and just about a year to the day I first went there I still found some nice things for a great price (in my opinion, at least).

As for the books...I think I actually have those already, but this was a pleasant mix. I added a picture this post as I was over the limit on the last.

Thanks guys. The boss is a good guy, perhaps the box is for following him to different jobs/companies and making his life easier

Thanks! I think the box is original to the set as well. A bit crusty but cool none the less.

This weekend was one for being on the other side of the table. I travelled down to Maryland for a bicycle swap meet as a vendor. Same wheeling and dealing, just different items. It's also a good spot for me to offload some of the years accumulation of hand tools, hex keys, metric wrenches etc. This year I brought and sold a couple of vises too- anytime I can avoid shipping those monsters it's a win.

I did stop at one roadside flea market in Connecticut to stretch my legs and.... see if I could find anything interesting. Came away with a few Armstrong wrenches, two little long C Craftsman, an Indestro Super wrench plus some Willams t-wrenches. Grabbed a few loose sockets too- Snap on, S-K and a New Britain.

WNY, that's awesome to get that chest - hope you knew the original owner some, since you and your boss seem to have a lot of history together.

5/16 UII hex key
3/16 Marvec hex key
0.183" Bristol wrench...good for a WW2 jeep!

Estate sale:
Lufkin 50' steel rule

Looks like 2 High Carbon steel knives also.
Brian

You and Lugz are both right. Was trying not to create much discussion about the non-garage stuff, but perhaps in the morning I'll have coffee in the garage, while sharpening the knives :) Couldn't pass up the knives or the cups at the respective prices, but the cups seem to be a better way to burn your lips than a canteen cup. I'd love to report back that I'm all wet about that concern!
