Go for the "welding goggles" bright. You can never have enough light in a shop. Wire them up to switch on 3/4 of them and add the last quarter when you really need them.
Great set up in the making.

Could you "enlighten" us on how you converted the lights to LED? I know there are a lot of those out there that get thrown away-if they could be changes out-for a little money and sweat, it would be great. Maybe put it in the lighting section on here. Great work you are doing on the hanger.

Yep, technically didn’t have to remove anything but it did make the fixture over 5 lbs. lighter. From the looks of it, it seems all he needed to do was remove the ballast guts from the original fixture and wire in a standard bulb socket. The bulb he chose is only 60W.
Yep, controlled burns seem to be a “necessary evil”. All the undergrowth helps small critters hide but it allows fires to easily spread and sometimes even kills the larger trees.Speed: just because our state and California has been on fire the last few summers I think we invented those old burn piles to clear land. we just get more wind now and lightning starting them and of course it's a lot warmer and dryer. that said it sure would be nice to legally burn brush in our yards again.
nice work on the light spiffing up and I had no idea there were so many cool choices for lightbulbs.
I wish i had all the space you have and sounds like you've got a plan so best of luck.
have a great weekend.
Your project looks pretty awesome.
There is an ex-garage in San Diego that is outfitted as a photo studio.

Thought you'd find it interesting.
Oh nice! I’ve been browsing for months at converted studio spaces and surprised I had not found this one yet—their photos instantly gave me a few ideas!

Oh nice. I’m a huge fan of the Quonset hut! ! I’ll have to check the out the next time I’m out there. The guy who owns it lives on site. The little 1/2 quonset hut in the back is nice and he did a lot of stuff with wrenches as towel holders, door pulls etc . . . I forget if those details come through in the pics.
It was a great space to shoot in, IIRC we shot there in the morning and then based out of there the rest of the day as we had locations nearby. It was definitely one of my favorite studios that I ever worked in.

It’s going to be a while until I have a proper garage setup but I think an Atlanta meet up should be planned for the spring! Food, bonfire, and garage floor and lighting talk lol! I have a million ideas to toss around and love to hear about other peoples experiences.Another local checking in. Would love to see this place some time. Really curious where it's at, since saying "Atlanta" is about the same as saying "Florida." Good plan to convert it into studio space. No matter what there doesn't seem to be enough of that around here these days.

One of the biggest influences on my space is P Blok in Instabul, Turkey. I haven’t been there but I’ve been admiring photos of their studio for years!

Then of course there’s always Hollywood and their over the top villain headquarters! Like this one from the 2007 movie War.

Cool! Having living space inside a larger building like this (or like the ones in Turtlevalley's or Morio's threads) is my dream. I really liked your Plan A - hope your income property plan goes well enough to reconsider Plan A in a few years. If you were a thousand miles closer I'd think real hard about driving over for your springtime bimmer gathering to check out your progress.
Keep the updates coming
If you're renting as a studio, you may want to have an inverter AC unit in the upstairs portion for respite. You know GA summers can be relentless, and that's often when production happens.
If you attached the window frames to the overhead purlin, you going have a problem if the wind blows real hard or it snows/rain because of deflection of the roof. Purlins will go up and down a certain distance over time. You need to have a sliding type of connection if you attached to purlins. Just wanted to give you a heads up on this.
Speed: I was also concerned about the quality of your loft once you tried to save the wood that was already there and happy to see you've moved on to a better quality solution. i'm not sure about all the roof movement or other things discussed so i'll be watching and learning as you do.
did you make a decision on which one of those space age light bulbs you are going to buy and use after trying one? I agree you can't have TOO MUCH LIGHT in your shop and I bet once there are items in there and on the walls you'll notice the light reflection will not have the same effect.
thanks again for showing us that you can change those industrial lights to work on regular power and now i wish i wouldn't have given the one away i had sitting on a shelf for years a couple months ago.
good luck with the progress and nice work so far
Speed: i've bought a few good ladders at local auctions so you might see if you can get a quality upgrade so you don't end up in the Emergency room trying to get some light in your shop.
got any more pictures?
