Hi all, I am new to auctions and estate sales etc. GJ is a dangerous place to spend time. After seeing a fully restored CM block grinder in the Tool Polishers thread I thought I might try to get one of those and do my own resto. I got this one at an auction for $20 and plan on doing it later in the year. Wish me luck!
:D

-Jay
Don't know how the photos got turned on their side. Sorry about that

Slipped out for one estate sale. Lots of old vintage and some antique stuff. mostly overpriced for me.

I picked up a few things.

About 7" of really light gauge track, probably for hand push mine carts. A dipper, a min torch (only tool), mercury thermometer, Master lock and a tin I wanted for a project, with mini cookie cutters (gave those to SWMBO)

attachment.php

And a lighted globe for my daughter. She has been wanting an older globe. It has a thermometer, barometer, and relative humidity, in the base. There is a dial and you can spot a lighted dot on a particular place. (its on France right now)

attachment.php

It's still pretty slow around here. not much for tomorrow so far...

That Globe is awesome! My grandparents had one that was like that but about 2 foot across. Played with it a lot as a kid

I don't usually do garage & estate sales. Overall, my experience hasn't been that good. Usually nothing but cheap junk or overpriced junk I'm not interested in. Just before lunch I checked the garage sales on CL. There was one with some vintage Craftsman tools and what looked like a really nice Crown badge toolbox. This estate sale was by a group called "Remember When". Today was supposed to be 25% off. Gotta be overpriced with a name like that. Right?

Anyway, I noticed two other garage sales near my house but I REALLY wanted to go see about those CM tools and toolbox but a garage sale was 5 minutes from home so I decided to hit it first. The man who owned the tools had been moved to Dallas by his brother and sister-in-law who were in Austin to sell his stuff after his home had been sold. Lot of cobwebs and dark spaces nothing looks like quality tools or anything. I build a small pile of things I may be interested in depending on asking price. I ask her what she wants (the brother her husband isn't there right at that time). She thinks about it and say would $20 be okay. I think about it and say yes. She didn't realize I was also including the 4-drawer cabinet with contents even though I said that and the other stuff but she says "Ok...sure". I tell her I'll give her $5 for the Chinese-made Sears 3 1/2" vise. "Okay". By then her husband, the owner's brother, is back and he's okay with our deal. I ask her how much for the shelf with drawers "up there". She says "Ten dollars". I let her know that IF it had all the drawers I'd do $10 or even if I knew I could find the drawers to fill it. I asked if they'd take $5 and they agree. They threw in a couple of spray cans of Rustoleum primer and two pieces of maybe Mahogany as freebies as well. Total spent was $30.

The green cabinet (pic #2) almost looks military issue to me. All four drawers in the green cabinet were full of stuff. Who made the these cabinets? I feel sure I've seen others here post pics of these. ??

The drawers in the Equipto shelf (pic #3) had nuts, bolts, washers, etc. It has a slightly bent top shelf (left side). I'm hoping I'll be able to straighten that without further damaging it. It causes the left most drawer on the middle shelf to be difficult to get out and in. How hard is it to find the drawers for these?

(Pic #4) I bought an old B&D Workmate last year for $5. I gave it to my son-in-law. I was just telling him last night that I needed it for restoring this small metal storage box I'm working on. So I was lucky and happy to find one (a knock-off??) today. This looks exactly like a Black & Decker but no company logo and the table top which could well be a replacement looks too thick. Anyone know who made knock-offs of the workmate or any way to confirm maybe who did make it?

The haul included small box of casters, an Outer's .22 rifle cleaning kit and a Hyde painting guide (pic #5). There was also a small box of Craftsman wrenches, sockets, etc (pic #6). The small box of Craftsman contained (pic #7) combination metric wrenches, a 1/4" drive ratchet, feeler gauge, couple of hex wrench sets, a small set of CM Midget (?) metric wrenches. That little red box in the upper left of the CM tools pic that I thought contained screws was full of more CM sockets. The two BIG sockets are 1/2" drive Proto Professional (36mm & 30mm). There were a few 1/2" drive 6-pt metric sockets, most of a set of 3/8" drive 12-pt metric, and at least a full set of 1/4" 6-pt metric and some 6-pt deep 1/4" metric sockets. Most were -G- marked with the backups being marked "--V--". The metric wrenches are mostly "--V--". This was the first time I'd ever seen a set of Midget wrenches. They're metric 4.5mm-5mm, 5.5mm-6mm, 6mm-7mm & 8mm-9mm.

I'll post pics tomorrow of the contents of the green cabinet. Definitely got some questions about some of the wrenches and tools in there.

Oh, I hit the other garage sale which was another 5 minute drive...nothing. I decided to blow off the overpriced "estate sale" figuring if it had a decent price on the CM toolbox and tools it was already gone. It was going to be a 20 minute drive too.

Another good Friday with tool finds - that's two Fridays in a row!!!

Pics after getting the stuff home...

Mike

There's been all kinds of weirdness going on with photos around here, intermittently, for the last few days. Sometimes I load a page here and the images are all mixed up - people's avatars appearing where smileys are supposed to be, huge smileys appearing where people's avatars are supposed to be, other people's attachments appearing in attachment thumbnails but the correct image appears when it's clicked on, etc. Clears up after reloading a few times. Doesn't happen on any other sites, and didn't happen on this site till a few days ago. Knowing that doesn't help much, but I think the problems are probably related. I know the administrator is planning to completely change out the forum software at some point in the future.

Got that error three times trying to upload all 7 pics at once. Tried with 5 pics...same result. Then I selected one pic & uploaded. No problem. Did the same with each of the remaining 6 pics, one at a time and that worked.

If they're changing the forum software everyone should get ready for a rocky road for awhile. Just sayin'. :)

Hit a couple of estate sales today.

First one didn't have much for tools but did find a few goodies. Spent around $16.
Pic 1: Sears Heavy Duty creeper was one of my favorites from this sale. I repurpose these as end tables.
Pic 2: Airstream trailer jack plate, older (no metric markings) Craftsman 4" adjustable wrench, wire brushes, box of turnbuckles and hooks and a box of canned goods that at 10 cents each will keep me eating for a while when I run out of money going t garage sales LOL.

Second sale was much better for tools but the Taiwan stuff was priced the same as the USA. Spent $36.10 which more than half will come back when I sell the hatchets to a collector I know.

Pic 3: Sears Ted Williams shotgun cleaning kit, Craftsman rectangular logo late 1970's bit kit in red case (my favorite find from this sale), Crown logo masonry trowel, 6 pc drill bit kit and glass cutter, Sears paint brush, Craftsman -V- and -VV- 1/4 driver breaker bar, flex handle, screwdriver bit and flexible extension and vintage Craftsman hand saw with plastic handle.

Pic 4: Inside of bit kit and shotgun cleaning kit.

Pic 5: Proto Challenger 1/2" drive ratchet, General sliding pocket ruler, Slaymaker padlock with key, CTA spark plug gapping keychain tool, USA feeler gauge I accidentally put in my basket, pin vise that had 4 drill bits inside, True Temper Model No. H and True Temper Boy Scouts hatchets and finally some 50 cent cleaning products I actually needed.

Pic 6 and 7: Close ups of the hatchets, notice the Boy Scout logo on the leather sheath snap.

Check that hatchet with the red handle, I see the Boy Scouts logo on that leather sheath so it's likely the hatchet is Boy Scouts as well.

And nice finds!

It is bb. Troop 422 Austin, Texas IIRC.

Edit: To anyone, what distinguishes a hatchet from an axe?

Little 6” Stillson, mini screw nut adjustable made in Germany, interesting shaped Dasco punch, Herbrand double flex wrench, P&C dbe, Williams dbe, Craftsman puller, Chisels- Buck, unknown, Stanley,Buck gouges.

View media item 80815
I think the Dasco is darn neat. Like an arrow head. Nail set maybe.

View media item 80816
Went through the sale a second time and for $10 grabbed a Jo Manufacturing hand drill, Billings 13” adjustable, 2 unknown chisels, Herbrand socket, Greenlee punch, and a bunch of hardware.

I like the green metal cabinet and looks like there is a stencil design on side.

Sorry, don't know the maker.

Looks like you did great at that garage sale!!!

Thanks. I can't find much information on the manufacturer other than patent requests.

Nice! No idea who made them. Post it in Drives'es cabinet thread.

On the Security Token error/issue, I have been getting the same thing ever since the site was down a few days ago for maintenance. I think it's related to size of images. I know, that doesn't seem as if it would logically result in a 'Security Token' error, but listen to this... I used to attach photos and let the site re-size them automatically. I discovered that if I re-size the photos myself, I no longer get the Security Token message, and don't have any problem attaching multiple photos.

This would explain why I don't get those errors as I always have resized...

Great finds guys! I'm with the others on that cabinet hatchet tx!

Got locked out (ad blocker) on the hatchet/Axe article, but IMO essentially hatchet = one handed use, axe (or ax) = two. One for light duty use, the other for heavy chopping.

Love that floor stand light! Very retro/cool. with that reflector, in makes a great work light. I'd use that one for the welding bench...

Here's my flea market finds from this morning.

View media item 80821
The torque-indicating wrench is a Thorsen 1/2-inch drive. The slip-joint "pliers" with the 90* head have a 1912 patent. I will be posting close-ups of those in separate threads after clean-up. The 60* x 15* ignition wrench is a wartime Duro-Chrome E69 (7/16 x 1/2) - the largest in a 9-wrench set, and not easy find when you're collecting these in onesy-twosies. The DOE wrench is a wartime Williams 723 SUPERRENCH. The drift key is a No. 1 with a crisp Cleveland Twist Drill Co logo. And a Bonney (CV) A16 socket.

Picked up a Saeco espresso machine. It was in the garage at an estate sale. Turns out they had a sandwich shop that closed down a few years back and it was working fine when they mothballed it. Usually appliances stored in the garage are not fully functional but they were only asking $20. When I asked if they were firm they countered with $15. I figured it all else fails I can sell off the parts on eBay and recoup my investment.

dbb60786a5f6ef627fcbd00c771c23b8.jpg

It looks to be hardly used. I did take it apart to clean off the years of garage dirt. Only after did I plug it in and try it out. It made a buzzing sound when I tried to make hot water but nothing came out. So took it apart again and found that the pump was jammed. Turns out there is a small rubber stopper in the pump that can stick to the orifice, blocking water flow. These pumps weren’t made to be serviceable but that never stopped me before.

Took about an hour to get it running again and it works great now. Ended up taking covers off like 8 times! Makes hot water and steam for frothing (or heating up other liquids) and grinds beans and dumps the grinds automatically. It even has a cup warming tray on top. Kind of big for a home kitchen but I’ll use it for a while and see if it’s worth keeping.

Lugz, my dad has that Thorsen torque wrench in regular use from about 1963-present. Never seen another until yours.

Hit one more sale today and found something I just happened to need. A bottle of espresso machine decalcifier. Funny how that works.

Also some AMF weights and a piece of brass pipe.

2ca72193ce1812f8f914e99140346609.jpg

The weights are 5 and 8 lbs. I will clean the handles and resell the weights which do well on eBay. Should get $100 for the pair.

And also found this unknown tool. First I thought maybe a clock part do to etchings but it opens up and looks like some sort of divider / compass.

Markings are 1/10 1/9 1/8 1/7 1/6 1/5 1/4 1/3 1/2

Paid asking price of $10

Matt those are proportional dividers. you can set the scale then measure with one end and mark the other for scale. Commonly used by draftsmen and designers in bygone days. Nice find!

Well my short run had 4 stops planned, one DOA, nothing from TOO's and dribbs and drabs for the three live stops...

Pics are mixed up:

Picked up the chrome plated brass bars, linseed oil, and the home brew copper tube halogen light at the first stop for $6.

I'll replace the 3A 12V transformer with a small one, use that big 3A one for my potable electric coolers, and replace the halogen bulb with LED. OR leave the Halogen and use it for a mini heat lamp for drying things :dunno:

The Breaker is an older Wright , (has a possible date code of 53? did Wright date code back than?) the extension is Proto LA. A buck each

The metal grip Rip Saw (3-1/2 TPI!), 2AA Mag light and Wiss No. 29 inlaid scissors were $3 total at the third good stop.

attachment.php

attachment.php

Anyone recognize the grip on the Saw? no makers marks on the saw at all.

attachment.php

And I sometimes clean things up before pics, some times after, but here are before and after about 2 min of cleanup of the Wright and Proto:

Yup, they did.

Forever thankful to Bonney, J.P. Danielson, Snap-On/Blue-Point, and Wright, and ever so briefly, to Plomb (late 30's through wartime) and Blackhawk (wartime) for dating their tools. Forever indifferent to all the others. And forever infuriated at Cornwell for using a date code system so arcane and cryptologically complex that we still haven't figured it out. :)

The metal grip Rip Saw (3-1/2 TPI!), 2AA Mag light and Wiss No. 29 inlaid scissors were $3 total at the third good stop.

Anyone recognize the grip on the Saw? no makers marks on the saw at all.

Outlaw, I have one of those metal-handled saws--found it at an estate sale a year or two ago. IIRC, we thought it might have ben an ice saw. No maker mark on mine either.

Testing...Trying to post with pics and I keep seeing this message. Anyone know what's going on?

Edit: I was able to get around this by uploading the pics one at a time. Weird!

Thanks!

I had the same problem and used the same solution but my photos showed up sideways. Not sure how to fix that

A buck each

And I sometimes clean things up before pics, some times after, but here are before and after about 2 min of cleanup of the Wright and Proto:

Some similarities, some differences. Mine has the Copper rivets. Grip outline is similar, The Grip holes are different. Have to do more Googleing...

One stop today- estate sale that had a few toolboxes listed as well as assorted hardware. Kind of an odd sale- they had pulled (almost) all of the Craftsman tools and had them on one table- way overpriced. And the hardware (screws, nuts, bolts) was the same way- super organized, super expensive. But I like digging so I bypassed most of the Craftsman and got this haul:
Armstrong and Rigid tri lobe pipe threaders, some Snap On metric sockets, more sockets by Blackhawk, SK and Bonney, Proto ratchet, pliers and combination wrench and some assorted SK, Willaims and Billings wrenches. Also picked up a couple of Kawasaki metric wrenches and a cool old Drednaut wrench- I'd never heard of Drednaut but the raised lettering was just fantastic. Also got a carpenters ruler and a nice US forged 3 ton hook. Finished up by poking though the Craftsman selection- got a metal drill index (empty) a screwdriver and a little ignition wrench because the small stuff was all that was priced well.
