Can someone who is, or who has a =CRAFTSMAN= Heritage era 10-drawer cabinet, confirm that?

Looks and measures out the same as the one I have in this 2 drawer heritage box.

Tore into the stack I got a couple of weeks ago. At the time it was advertised as an all MAC stack, but when I brought it home I saw that the top is actually Cornwell (has a badge inside). Then the vintage of the MAC roller was brought into question, since it has rolling (rather than sliding) drawers.

At this point, I wonder if it's a MAC at all? I did find a stamp on the bottom left of it - looks like "4-61-440" - but Google is silent.

I really do like it - it's in good shape, other than minor rust on bottom, and it's cover is unique - I've never seen another like it.

Any info you may have on this cabinet is MUCH appreciated!

And yes - I got two keys with it. :)

Here are the photos -

Well, here's a Cornwell that looks like it, though handles are a little different.

That looks IDENTICAL (except the handles), but those are easy enough to swap.

So I wonder what the deal is? Cornwell and MAC used the same manufacturer and different badging? All three of my boxes are Cornwell, with the roller getting a fake MAC badge? It looks too factory for that, but who knows ...

Waterloo and MBC made most boxes for the big tool manufacturers. Just put on the appropriate badge and color. Some were also made by Yorktown and AMDC. The one you posted above is Waterloo.

Ah, Ok. That makes sense. Is this why SO and CM boxes are more collectible - because they manifactured them themselves vs others where it’s basically the same thing / different logo?

Made in 1961, probably (I am guessing based on the stamp)?

Not really, MBC made SO boxes forever. I don't think SO made there own until the 70 s.......I forget the exact timeline. CM never made there own anything.

:+1: CM boxes were made by Pressteel, Waterloo, Advertising Metal Display Co (AMD Co. trademarked, then became RemLine...) Kennedy, certainly others. The real question may be what box MFG did Sears NOT use for the Craftsman line....

I picked up this top / bottom combo over the weekend and am looking for information on the bottom box. Lots of surface rust, even to the point of pitting, throughout the box but overall it's still solid.

I'm taking the top box at its word, being made by Cornwell. The bottom box has a badge that is somewhat illegible. I can make out XXXXXXXX Corporation Cedar Rapids, Iowa. I tried an etching and the text in question didn't seem to come out, likely due to corrosion.

Anybody have any ideas as to the manufacturer?

MercLSU, try the following:
put a piece of paper on the sign and start quickly moving a pencil across with slight pressure and slowly increasing it (like we used to trace coins as kids...). It might give you outline at least of some letters and might solve the secret of this cool box!

Hah, it's funny you mention that but I did try that briefly last night and I didn't have much luck. I'm going to try a lighter touch with some thinner paper this evening. I may try to give this to my father as I don't have room for it...it's a pretty neat setup. There are much more elaborate setups available from all over these days but in its heyday it was probably better than most.

Thanks! Yes sir on the 1965 part and somewhat on the California edition part. Although it was born a simple T-code (6-cylinder) and shipped elsewhere in the country, I did get it from California a few years ago.

MercLSU, I have another thought on the subject: it's hard to see how the sign is held, but can it be taken off? If yes, then just read it from the opposite site - probably it's stamped.

I was hesitant to scrub any harder than I already did before that picture, as in the past I've made things worse... :headscrat And sorry about the picture, my cell phone camera isn't exactly professional.

That's a really good thought and I did get the rivets out and remove it. Unfortunately there was no detail from stamping on the back side. That did allow me to clean it a little better and figure out that its....

LeFebure! They made lots of banking type stuff and although this could have been repurposed, it's odd how the back part fits the Cornwell 26" wide box like an absolute glove. I don't really see anything similar with a basic Google search.

I much appreciate the help y'all.

Looks great, Silly
You can either replace the lock or try to get just the key. An experienced person can open the old lock and change locking pins within the cylinder (you can try matching it to lower box if key size fits, find an old used key or create a new pattern (the latter from blank will probably be slightly more expensive). The problem is getting a person who still knows how to do it. Last time I wanted to change pins within the cylinder for several old locks to match in Home Depot, I had to come back as there was only one person in a large store experienced enough to fit lock to existing key...

If the locks have a number a good lock smith pan punch a new key from a blank. Or you can get a matched set and replace both with matching keys. You may need to order that, as I haven't seen matched sets in stores for a while.

I picked up a couple older SO boxes this week and I believe the tops are KR-56. I am not having any luck in trying to take the drawers out. I know on some of the older models you can use a slide removal tool or a hacksaw blade but I really don't see any tabs on these to get behind. Anyone have any suggestions?

Also, where would the model number and date code be located on these boxes?

The top one is KR 56 prior to 1955 based on emblem and drawer handles
Try to look up how to take out drawers on YouTube. There is also a great description in GJ but I do not remember where.
You just push either SO special tool (2$) or self made tool in the side slot and then pull the drawer out.
Congrats on nice boxes!!!

Model number and date are on left side left lower corner

Pull the drawer all the way out. Hold the slide and move the drawer back in maybe 1" or so.

Its best if the removal tool has a SLIGHT bend in the last 1/2" or so.

face that bend towards the drawer so it gets under the hidden spring retainer on the slide.

Slide the drawer out and/or the slide in.

Repeat on the other side.

Brought this guy home this week. From my research it's a KR-53 from before 1955 (but after 1953), since I can't find any stamps on the back. In REALLY nice shape - was obviously taken care of.

Here are a couple recent estate sale finds. An old None Better New Britain socket box labeled No. 1041 and a Western Auto Wizard box with tray numbered 4 H 4865. I've unsuccessfully tried to match the New Britain box to known sets from catalogs but still trying. I just picked up the Wizard box yesterday and haven't begun looking for info on the number for it. Both boxes are in pretty good shape with no major issues. Just minor clean up thus far.

Searches for Wizard catalogs haven't turned up much either. I did find an old post here on another Wizard box. If anyone has clues for where I might find a 40's vintage New Britain or 60's/70's vintage Wizard catalog I'd appreciate it. The one appropriate vintage None Better catalog on ToolArchives didn't have a match for my box or set number.

Another small box from my slowly growing collection of staff (which probably needs to be modified - have too many small boxes to get rid of and need one nice bottom box (slowly looking for old SO in good condition and locally to match my 1955 KR56)

This one is a Waterloo 32 x 8.5 x 9.5
Got it for free as a part of my Monday pick up...

If anybody has/seen the same one: what were they used for? It's quite long. Also, there is a small rectangular hole at the top - anybody knows the secret or the PO just cut it through?

I saw a lot of small tool boxes in my life, but never saw such a long one. One of my guesses - may be for wood workers as it accommodates old style wood saws quite easily.

Carpenters box. For hand saws and other long stuff; levels? The rectangular hole is to let the short end of a carpenters square poke thru.

I keep most of my hand saws in one, and another is full of bolt cutters and the heavier duty Whitney punches, as well as a band iron cutter.

From another thread, I found it today......anyone has a guess as to a year or era?

I believe that S-K used that decal through WW2 and shortly thereafter changed to the riveted on tag.

The slot in carpenter’s boxes was demonstrated to me today when the garage sale seller grabbed a framing square and it was a perfect fit for the slot in his Kennedy box.
Speaking of Kennedy boxes, I was able to pick this one up this morning at a garage sale in San Anselmo, CA. I found an earlier model of the same box a couple of years ago at the Tahoe flea.
-Don
Edit. My Kennedy carpenters box came with a slot cut in for the square which I filled in with a sheet metal patch.7FF39B40-8F50-4917-9CF3-9A2782E66996.jpg20E00427-4079-4A13-9F41-D739E7D9FEA9.jpgA21C32FA-CAB0-43D1-86BE-874C22F8251A.jpg325CC98A-561A-4994-9EF0-0DCAB5069A3F.jpg827A4030-D6AE-4F21-9439-EAEFC2F3FAB7.jpeg86B03A8F-9601-4675-9A34-FCB6BF37432C.jpegAE2972EE-4AB5-47FC-AF3D-8B121BA45E47.jpeg
