Ha Oldtule- I hope I didn’t come across as rude. I am indeed grateful to have it. It is in excellent shape.

Looks like the #13H box in the '32 catalog.

This little set of wee handles and tiny double hexagon sockets ideal for use on work in close quarters such as: Automotive universal joints, oil pump screws, terminals, water pumps and fan assembly located in front of motor, carburetor joints, cap screws, generator bolts, pole pieces and brushes, universal generator and water pump couplings, distributors and numerous other electrical and automotive devices. Ideal for aviation work. Set contains 13 tools, one each of items, pictured at right.

That's an odd decal! The top is Q.D. era, obviously, but, as you guys know, Q.D. era set model numbers were numbers (indicating the number of pieces in the set) followed by a letter or series of letters indicating the box or case and configuration (whether the sockets were single or double hex). I don't recognize the other number, even by format, but I'm less versed in early Lock-On era sets, and I'm on my phone, in the city for the day, so I can't check later 30's catalogs, but I'd hazard a hunch that it's transition. Q.D. box with a Q.D. decal, with a banner with an early Lock-On era set number underneath instead of a Q.D. era set number.

Like I said, odd. Even the shape of the decal for the set number is not Q.D. era. Those were flying banners. These rectangles can be seen in later 30s catalogs. But that number is weird. I wonder if it's not a Blackhawk number but a distributor or retail store number!

Interesting. I'm still leaning toward set numbers that were used by a big hardware store or a catalog company. Going back to your previous post - no, it's not a midget box. Blackhawk did not make 1/4-inch drive sockets and handles in the Q.D. era. And when they did start making 1/4-inch drive tools (1935), they didn't come in H boxes, they came in N boxes, with a single socket compartment in the back or the front. The H boxes were only used for 3/8-inch drive sets as far as I know.

So 3/8 then. I have not seen alot of early 3/8 blackhawk, I am guessing it's scarce.

This reminded me that I came across an early 3/8” drive socket the other day. I see 3/4” drive like the one shown in my pic pretty regular but this is the first 3/8” I’ve seen in the wild. IMG_3213.jpg

Folks, I'm working on this 1/2" Blackhawk socket set. I need this style D20 and D32 (5/8 & 1"). "Double-dotted knurl" Any assistance greatly appreciated!

UPDATE: I found a D20, all I need is the D32 1" socket.

I'll check my BH stash - I have a bunch of that style. I owe you some pics!

Nice set! What year are those?

That style BH socket appears in the 1935 BH catalog; the 1937 catalog shows primarily the more common multi-ridged style.

Interesting. Blackhawk is one of the few companies I have seen that would sell more than one style at a time.

So Twertsy posted the above, looking to complete his Dxx Blackhawk socket set.

I took a look at my similar BH sockets, and discovered the following:

My series Dxx sockets don't have 2 rows of square knurls, but rather 3 or 4.
attachment.php

And my sockets that have 2 rows of square (perhaps rectangular(?)) knurls are numbered 84xx series.

Picked up a 1930's era Blackhawk 1/2-inch drive O16 (square) with a 1/2" service opening today at the flea market. (Ignore the wartime black oxide Walden-Worcester and Duro-Chrome that are flanking it. Just conserving time.)

I posted these pics on the vintage box thread- but should have here. I just purchased this without knowing much about it. However, it looked neat so...

That's a Porto Power that appears to have been sitting in a damp place for a looooong time. I would have grabbed that in a heartbeat and then used it to bait Twertsy. lol

Finally brought this home. Thankfully, its very solid just covered in surface rust. It was a family affair gently removing the rust with a scotchbrite pad. It appears to even have the OEM rubber mats. Attached are pics before the flea dipping occurred. I originally planned to wax, but am leaning toward linseed oil treatment

Saw this Blackhawk tool at an estate sale this morning. What is it? Looks like an old multi-head tool. Not sure I'd have paid $5 for it much less the $10 they were asking. Should I go back for it? Has "Blackhawk 4 151" on the handle. Thanks, Mike

PS I'm not interested in collecting it. If it's good trade bait I'd like to know.

Basically a drain plug wrench. Not sure what they are worth, maybe do ebay history search.

They sell on the flea bay for 25-45 bucks regularly. Anything north of that, they sit unsold.

It's a drain plug wrench. I would have paid 5 bucks for it.

I think this is the first so-called "Small" series (3/8-inch drive) Lock-On wartime era socket I have ever found. Has all the right features and the markings, including a 1941 ("1") date code. I'm a little puzzled by the 31522 model number. These were 30xxx sockets in the 1939 and 1943 catalogs, and this 11/16" opening was model number 30022. EDIT: Never mind. It's a Nugget! DOH! If I rarely see 3/8-inch drive, I NEVER see Nuggets!

I came across a set of 3/8ths Blackhawk sockets this weekend. The dates range from 41 up to 49. I had to cough up 20 clams for the set but like you I never see 3/8ths so I grabbed them.

Nice snag Sonny!

Given that we're under a state of emergency with half the roads and bridges closed due to flooding, I was shocked when I found this set. I was 50/50 on getting out of the car for a rainy indoor basement sale but I'm glad that I rolled the dice. I also got some other cool stuff like a Firestone hatchet.

Very nice! Except for Craftsman and Snap-on, sockets are typically $1 each up here, but most vendors know that complete matching sets are special, regardless of the brand, so even if your guy didn't know Blackhawk was collectible, $20 was a great deal for 13 sockets. For 13 Blackhawk 3/8-inch drive sockets, that's a score.

They're a little late for that 70-piece R Case "Treasure Chest" you have, which is 1930's era as I recall, with some original 1930's era tools, but that little anachronism wouldn't stop me from putting them in there for the time being, and maybe forever. I have a few situations like that.

I guess I was still half asleep when I bought this set. Turns out that it's not a 3/8ths set like I first thought. It's a 7/16ths nugget set. I went to clean these up a little bit and that's when I realized what I actually have here. I guess I have to start looking for a 7/16th ratchet and extension now!
