Congrats bb! That is the kind of day we all hope for when we head out to hit a sale! What fun. I'd have felt like a kid in a candy store with permission to pick everything I wanted!

My only score yesterday, found in a bucket under a bunch of offshore sockets, in an inch of oil, there was a guy before me digging around in it but evidently did not want to look thru the oil on the bottom....the two elder lady having the garage sale were laughing, she sold all her husbands tools a week before to a nephew, he missed that one she said, and asked me if I really wanted it because it was so nasty/dirty...I asked how much she said a buck, then she changed her mind and said a quarter because it was so nasty...!

Question for this 1 HP electric motor that I couldn’t resist for $3. Is it safe to use the motor with a buffer and wire wheel? I ordered an arbor for it. 1725 RPM. I am using 1/4 hp one today but would like to have one with wire brush and one with buffing wheel.

The hand drills where $2 each and USA made chisel and file were $1 each. The slip joint pliers say Japan on it no brand.

I use a similar (2/3HP I think) 1725 RPM with a wire wheel almost on a daily basis... I'll take a pic of mine. It's exposed vents like that but I just blow the crud off every now and then. Has run like a champ...

Not a great lot but for $35 It works out since I bought a charger at lowes for $35 a few weeks ago, so I'll just return it since I found kal equip USA one. I couldn't find much about the company, but I saw cornwell was selling some test equipment under that name at some point, I imagine they bough the name at some point after this charger was made.

Didn't do too bad, the two deep sockets are 15 and 18 fapoff's that are probably the newest snap on stuff I have, no wear on them. Didn't have a body hammer, it's like $30 for that specific one new. That switch is a $60 part at grainger, don't have much use for it at the moment, but for $2 might as well. Compass was kinda a bit much for my cheap self but it feels pretty well build, west german so I figure might as well. Drill bits are about a full set minus 5/64, they are black and decker but were west German made so I can't imagine they are too bad, can always use more full sets of drill bits.
Turns out that 1 1/4 socket is actually 3/4 drive, I already forgot the name but it was snap on's budget line under bluepoint, Pak x or something. SK 7mm wrench, wayne 1/4 round head in good shape, Craftsman 3/8 rat, I forget how old those are but I think 60's or 70's since those came after the flying wing selector ones iirc.

Short answer - no.
Long answer - As long as you take reasonable caution, you should be fine.
Wear eye protection to protect yourself from shedding wires. A leather apron helps as well.

Here's a pic of my wire wheel setup. I used a 1/2hp 1725rpm motor.
I have a similar motor set for buffing.

image.jpg

My last setup was even more hazardous. Keep a good grip on anything you're wire wheeling or buffing, in the blink of an eye it will be ricocheting around your shop and bouncing off your forehead. BTDT.

Nice! The oil probably preserved it!

-A bunch of =v= and proto sockets I needed.
-A proto LA #4 Phillips socket
-proto LA and long c Craftsman wrenches
-A 9/32 williams breaker bar
-My favorite... a proto 9/32-1/4 adapter!

Okay, as promised here's a pic of my setup... The box I made from scrap OSB and it helps contain all the crud that would otherwise go flying around everywhere.

But wait there's more! After the flea market I hit a nearby estate sale for half off day.

Pic 1: Not much there but I pick these old Ames pegboard store displays which will hopefully let me get some of my stuff organized. Also got the Simple Green and antifreeze , a little vintage bed light, more pegboard hooks and an Excelite pliers for $9.50 total.

So then I go to the local brewery for a couple of beers, as I pull in I get a text and pictures from the guy with his dad's Craftsman tools. I call him and arrange to come see them right then. We kept on digging up more stuff!

Pic 2 and 3 all Craftsman: Left side top to bottom, tool box, blue case with jewelers screwdrivers, yellow Crown logo tap and drill case, Crown logo square, Crown logo small wood plane, 70's rectangular logo pocket knife, wood chisels, handsaw and Underline C logo folding metal ruler and hammer.
Right side top to bottom, Craftsman chisel and plane blade sharpening device,, =V= wrenches without part number, -V- Allen wrenches and a 70's logo 50 foot tape measure.

After that I went back to the brewery for a couple of drinks before I headed home to unload.
attachment.php

Good stuff! The little "blue case with jewelers screwdrivers" is actually still a present-day product, FYI - just saw it at my local Sears recently.
http://www.sears.com/craftsman-5-pc-screwdriver-set-precision/p-00904107000P - $8.

SWMBO and I planned an estate sale stop into our Sunday afternoon errands run. It was a huge house packed with lots of high end stuff (crystal, furniture, paintings/artwork, etc) but I saw a few promising garage and basement pictures.

We're rolled up with two hours to go on day two, so I knew we'd be picking through the dregs. Here's what we found.

20180506_142700.jpg

Draw-tite 2"receiver--I'll use this to build a work bench mount for my Wilton.

1525634051681.jpeg

Walworth Genuine Stillson 36" pipe wrench--found this guy back in the shadows nearly behind a storage cabinet.

20180506_142717.jpeg

Craftsman Crowntop era grinder attachment for sharpening blades. I saw the block bench grinder in the pics for the sale. Whoever bought it missed this! I found the attachment in one box, the brackets in a storage unit, and the instructions on the workbench.

20180506_142730.jpg

Two boxes of blue and green glowsticks, more than 23 years past their expiration dates. I broke open a blue one and snapped it--a faint blue glow was still there, so these will be for party decorations or some such.

20180506_142743.jpg

Two boxes of big ol' wire nuts and two flood light bulbs.

20180506_142751.jpeg

Garden hose repair parts
Brass hose nozzle
10 feet of magnetic peel-and-stick tape
Box o' screw hooks
Red Devil razor scraper
#21/2 push type glaze points
3 1/8" quick links
20-amp GE GFCI single pole circuit breaker

20180506_142802.jpeg

SWMBO's finds: purple sheets, garden pixie, glass vase & bag o' ribbons to donate.

20180506_142811.jpeg

Sue was at the check out table--and she always gives great prices on tools. She glanced at the box of stuff and said "How about $20 for everything?" Sold!

Actually the issue is Imgur-hosted image embeds only ever display if you take out the "s" in "https". :) It just looks to you like they work at first, because your browser still has a cached copy of the image from when you uploaded it.

So, my oldest daughter gave me a lucky penny that she found yesterday and today I hit a road trip where I was able to stop at two sales. This is my $10 haul from the Serendipity pop-up sale....

And that doesn't include a picture which I have yet to take of a Sears auto motor heater fueled by karoseen/gasoline. Very very exciting!

Mr_P,
What's the make on the little drill press stand? BTW, I thought of you and your daredevil daughters yesterday. Check out thumbnail 1.

And if pfaustus is checking in, see thumbnail 2! I guess Keith got tired of dealing with some of his clientele!

Nice to see all of the great scores from the weekend. Seriously nice find on the Atlas lathe. Could not get out this weekend, too much other stuff to do.

definitely a period-correct to the lathe drill press the model number on it is 103.03.02. It has the same knobs as the lathe to make size/height adjustments.

Picked up a 12 Williams Superadjustable - best part was the box! Also a 10" little giant pipe wrench with reversible jaw. A book from the 'Powerplant library' still in plastic. And a cool pocket watch with great engraving on the mechanism.

ALL: it's been a while since I posted anything or actually made time to go to a sale or buy anything, but I found this Richfield charger that needed a new home. I think it works according to the 90 year old previous owner, but if it doesn't do i need a degree to restore one of these or are these pretty simple cause I love this one a lot more than the other ones I own
?

Those old chargers are stone simple. A transformer, a rectifier and a timer.
that's it, except some have multi-tap transformers and a switch to select voltage and max current. First test it with a meter. It may seem to be working, but putting out AC if the rectifier is shorted. If the rectifier is open, you'll get no output. Then put your meter on the transformer leads and look for volts. If none, make sure the switch is good and delivering power to the transformer. If it's ok, the transformer is dead and you're toast. The rectifier is the most problematic part. In those oldies they were selenium, but just swap in a modern silicon diode rated for the max current the charger will put out - plus a safety factor of 2x or so.

Good luck! I bought a similar unit a few years ago that was marked $10 at a garage sale. They let me have it for $5 because they didn't have an outlet to plug it into to test. It works perfectly.

Very nice! Looks like a Swiss movement, probably last quarter of the 19th century.

Got my first Lista Cabinet at a swap meet today. Saw it in the back of a guys truck, as he was unlaoding the rest of the stuff. recognized the color and rushed over. Asked him how much? He says $75! I beat another guy by seconds to get it. Its dirty but I will clean it up. It doesnt fit where I wanted it to go so will have to do a little reworking of my shelf.

Today, being my only day off in 8 days, I got up early!! Hit the flea market. Then an estate sale this afternoon. Found a few good things, but a rival tool guy beat me to all the sales today and cherry-picked the best stuff. He did, however, miss a bunch of Plomb, and a BluePoint single offset DBE among other stuff!

Flea Market haul:

Punches/Chisels
Proto Prof 1"
Mayhew punch
OTC punch

Sockets:
SnapOn Swivel
Bonney Deep well
Herbrand Deep
Walden Worchester Female to Female 1/2 swivel

Hammer:
Shop made tiny MAYDOLLE ball pein

Adjustable wrenches:
B&C 8"
LACO 6"

Wrenches:
Plomb pebble 1130 DBE
Proto & Proto LA DBE

One strange wrench I can't quite make out the markings that has a ruler on the back!

You guys are doing GREAT tis weekend!

Nothing here as I left Friday for camping and came home today. Overall had a good time. had a bad time for 30 min on the way home about 20-25 min into the trip home. I hit a hidden rut/pothole, at 20-25 MPH, and the trailer bounced HIGH, and I either backed off the throttle after the rut, or tapped the brake, or both, and it jackknifed, decoupled (chains held) and flipped over. The cargo box lid ripped off at the hinge and emptied the cargo contents onto the side of the road.

Every plastic tub broke to one degree or another, one of my oak boxes I made Last fall has the hinged side broke open, (but did NOT open.. ) the other oak box appears intact. No Clue yet what the damage is inside...)

attachment.php

We got it righted, reloaded, (some into the rig) and three of us lifted the cover and car top tent onto the top, then strapped it down and finished coming home.

I'll have to fully assess battle damage later, but I may be lookingvfor another trailer. I'm pretty sure the car top tent survived...

Sorry to hear that Outlaw but glad nothing but material things were damaged. All that's replaceable. I hope. ;-)

You stole that cabinet DanD. Congrats to you  and, YOU ****! Through a used equipment dealer you's likely pay $75 - $100 per drawer for that cabinet. The seller clearly did not know his product and more to your benefit that you spotted it first. Clean her up and enjoy those quality drawers for your tools.

Glad you are all right and home Outlaw.

In my usual attempt to give the wife some time to herself on Sun. I hit another estate sale, picking up this

Unused thermocouple, Hazet combo, Fairmount DBE, Mayhew driver, Easco hacksaw handle, a thing of zip ties and also a hose reel (not pictured) that my wife had been asking for. $5

Then went back to the crazy estate I was at on Fri. as it was half price day. There was a Victrola that I was hoping for, but it was gone, as where much of the other antiques. But I did find some good stuff.
