Lots of sales this weekend but not too many scores.

I couldn't pass up this old Union Machinist chest for $5. The good news is that the carcass is in excellent shape, leather handle is good, has all 8 corner and all six drawers.

The bad news is that one ring pull is missing along with the front panel/lock.

Giant American Beauty 300 watt soldering iron $10, bag of scotch brite abrasive pads $3 and Corono pruning saw $1.

Be aware some of the drill bits for deep oil wells you might want to avoid if you don't know their back story... When they drill that deep the run into all sorts of nasty stuff, heavy metals, radioactivity, etc... and they are usually 'cleaned' (to remove previously mentioned contanimations), then reconditioned, then sent back out into the field...

I was talking to a guy that worked with them and sometimes they would come back pretty hot (radioactive). Makes me wonder about the guys working on the derek handling these things if they wore geiger tags...

Bought a drill bit.

dkroth, that is for drilling wells

Iffy weather but several vendors at the flea market. Got the Stanley no. 5 plane and blow gun for $9. Needs some work but sound and complete. Two bux got the 1" addition to my Bernzomatic collection. Then I spied two kitchen baskets full of wrenches, one flat one sockets. I could see some Craftsman aND no rust or dirt. I offered to clear off the shelf for the right price. What 's the right price, she asked. AND she accepted. In 3/8 there are 6-21mm, 9&16mm deep, 1/4-7/8, 3/8-11/16deep, less 1/2, and 5/16-7/16 stars.
In 1\2, there are 9mm, 12-16, 21 and 13/16-15/16. Nine assorted 1\4 drives wrap up the C-man. There are 4 US and 6 foreign sockets.
The combos are 7-13mm,15, 18 and 11/32, 3/8, 7/16, 3/4 and 4 off-brands.
Hidden the bottom were 5 driver bit holders and a crafty 3/8 universal.
Even swmbo admitted it was a good haul.
oh, the Right Price was $20.--for 80 sockets and 20 combo wrenches, 95percent US made.

Total spent: $31.

the G sale I came across between going to different Estate sales had all kinds of junk but I stopped just to see. On a table in the back was assorted stuff on a table. I look down and see a Scope for a riffle. Looks old, has leather lens covers. German markings. I ask the lady about it, she calls for the man of the house. I think ahh man here we go. A little guy with a fluffy dog comes out and talks to me. Says his dad took it in WW2 and it was in his things when he passed. It gives him the creeps. $10. Sold! Also at a small sale besode it I got a Craftsman circular saw for $10 barely used!

Anyone know anything about old scopes? From googling the names its pretty old, possibly even WW1. Looks to have been used on Gewher 98 rifles...

I don't know anything about German scopes, but that thing looks terrific. Look at those leather caps! I would get all the numbers off it and find a website. The serial number, if there is one, would definitely help date it.

Cool, thanks.

I'm sure there are threads and sites dedicated to how to restore a drill-press. You wouldn't happen to have a link to recommend? I'll be Googling it too.

Also forgot to post this lot I got from a local church sale last weekend for $17. Not a killer deal but I am always glad to help out a church! Craftsman jig saw , plomb, proto, craftsman , p&c ,etc. I have since cleaned up the tools and they look pretty good! Also got the cool tin of battery chemical additive which has a 2 digit zip code so it is prior to 1959.

My dad has that exact Craftsman jigsaw. If I recall correctly, the switch on the top unlocks the big knob which allows you to rotate the jigsaw blade while its running without independent of the saw body.

Two sales worth stopping at today and a trip to the ReStore.

First sale picked up several boxes of nails, small plastic tackle box, wood cigar box, Craftsman soldering gun, sandpaper, and X-acto knives all for $13.

Second was an estate sale. Found a few misc tools, but found a lot of nuts, bolts, screws and misc hardware for $3.

ReStore yielded Stanley Handyman keyhole saw, Proto wood handled screw driver, Cee Tee and Pennens pliers, wood chisel, Craftsman screwdriver, Plumb hatchet and a large plastic organizer for $8.16.20180519_152521.jpeg20180519_154729.jpg20180519_154759.jpg20180519_154814.jpg20180519_154837.jpgIMG_20180519_155946_140.jpgIMG_20180519_155946_164.jpg20180519_153133.jpg

Pic 4 - Weber grill, works and in decent shape just needs a clean up. The best price of all: FREE! I was with the wife at the time going around a neighborhood yard sale in the mini van. Sitting at a sale was the grill with a free sign. It was like 9 am so a little late from the start, couldn't believe no one else took it. I said it's coming with us. Wife said it wouldn't fit because of the other stuff we had plus the height. Well I proved her wrong, just had to take off the lid and slide it in.

"slide it in, without the top" :D

Nope, not that I've ever seen/heard of! And they get drenched in mud/chemicals/etc spatter from the hole! :shocking:

A little interesting reading, starts off with a guy trying to take oil well pipe (edit: not drill bit, but same kind of exposure) to a scrapyard and getting rejected because the scrapyard guy had a Geiger counter that went off on it... http://discussions.texasbowhunter.com/forums/showthread.php?t=146781

The verdict is that it's low enough levels of radiation that it shouldn't do any harm, I think.

I got busy mowing and forgot about the end time and lost it to a really low bid! Thats awesome you found it in the wild!
It is looking like rai here tonight but Tomorrow being my only day off and a pocket fulla OT cash, I will get up super early and head out to the flea and some estates and G sales!!
Don't worry I gave it a good home. Couldn't believe it sold that cheap.

Check out the axis militaria forum Wehrmachtawards.com. Those guys are very knowledgeable and will be able to id it. I would guess it to be worth about $250?

Correct, it does swivel independent of the body of the saw

The first few sales today were slim or no pickings. My luck changed when I stopped at a Flea Market in a church parking lot.

Photo 1: Two Adjustable brand 8 inch C-clamps, putty knife, small Craftsman screwdriver, Bluegrass battery pliers, Proto 5/16 combo wrench, flex 1/4" driver with Craftsman socket, Proto Allen sockets, rail and Proto regular sockets, and an Oxwall drill index mostly stocked with drill bits. $10.

Photo 2: Sockets and Rigid 14" pipe wrench. All the larger sockets in the divided tray are USA, mostly Craftsman and Thorsen, with one old Snap-On. The 1/4 drive sockets are mixed USA and imports. The round tray is all import. $10.

Photo 3: Greenfield ratcheting tap wrench, good file handle, Two no-name and one Williams punches, Proto 739 Radiator Hose tool, P&C 67 punch, P&C 2006 Brake Adjuster, Long-C Craftsman No. 3 Tappet Wrench. $5.

Photo 4: Close-up of the Tappet Wrench

I then moved about 100 yards down the street and checked out a yard sale on the other side of the street.

Photos 5 & 6: Long-C Craftsman die grinder in custom wooden box. It works! Lots of tooling. It even has the pistol grip!

Photo 7: Record #5 (5") vise and Peterson Vise Grips. Other than a little weld spatter on the jaws, the vise is in excellent shape. $20.

I originally planned on going out to 1 or 2 sales today, but instead I ended up spending my morning picking up a CL buy for my sister. The rain started just as I parked the trailer in the back yard.

I think she overpaid at $350, but hey, it's her money. She didn't like the Free ones I showed her on CL. But this one wasn't much better. She wanted to spend $1000 on one at the Warehouse with all the bells and whistles, until I showed her how cheaply built it was. This older one by Rainbow is about 15yrs old and still solid, except for the boards that were in contact with the ground.

I ended up taking it apart mostly by myself while my sister and Lump-in-Law stood there and watched.

From the ad :
IMG_0598.JPG

me : Hey LiL, I need you to hand me a 3/8 beaker bar from the toolbox.
LiL : This ?
me : No that's a 1/2" ratchet. Give me the straight thing with the 3/8 bendy bit on the end.
LiL : Here.
me : No, that's the 1/2" breaker bar. Give me the smaller bendy thing that was on top of this one.

The rest of the time I just ran up and down rather than describe what tool I needed. Half the damned bolts were SAE and the other half were Metric. :wtf:

Here it is still sitting on the trailer :
100_2721.jpg

I need to take stock and figure out which rotten boards will need to be replaced and fix it before I drag it off and set it up for my nephew before his birthday party next month.
I hate when someone is as dumb as a box of rocks with the rocks, about tools and working on stuff.

I don't have a problem with people being dumb about tools and working on stuff. I have a problem with the willfully ignorant that refuse to listen and learn and at least TRY. :headscrat

jake: Last year I posted pictures of an old Rainbow set in my yard with the caption, "FREE - YOU DISASSEMBLE AND HAUL," in English and Spanish in grocery stores and cafes etc in the neighboring town. Meanwhile the CINC-HOUSE was smirking at me like, "You'll never get rid of that old thing." "It's still sturdy," I argued. "Just needs some TLC." Within an hour I got a call, an hour later three Mexicans showed up, and it was out of my yard an hour after that. He who smirks last smirks best!

EDIT: This morning's small haul...

Finally, a break in the rain, if not the clouds. Jakes’ flea was somewhat flooded and a bit sparse, but found a few items. Among them, this Indestro hex-drive socket set in box. There seem to be a few duplications and maybe a couple MIA. Have to clean up the pressed steel wrenches to see if they are actually Indestro or not. The Indestro ratchet with square plug does not seem to me to have been part of this, though maybe the same era. Also stupidly bought a few Bonney items that duplicate ones I had already - even while checking my “lists.” And a couple Stanley screwdrivers, three Hinsdale DOEs, and an old pouch of Allen-branded hex and spline keys.

Wow. That's a cool set, LS! The label is sketchy, but just enough remaining to make it worthwhile. I don't think I've ever seen that particular label before, quite honestly. And the design of that adjustable valve grinder is ingenious. four.cycle would be all over that set like a little kid in a candy store!

jake: .......... Within an hour I got a call, an hour later three Mexicans showed up, and it was out of my yard an hour after that. He who smirks last smirks best! ...

It took me about 2-1/2hrs. It shouldn't have been more than 45min. You should have been there to hear the step by step instructions I had to give just to carry the pieces to the curb. Loading the trailer was excruciating.

Simple instructions like "stand it up", "turn it around", and "put it here" were too complex for them. It was like I was speaking a foreign language.

They were in awe that I thought to strap a hand truck to the tower and tip it onto the wheels to roll it to the street. Even then, they couldn't understand what I was doing until we rolled it out of the backyard.

My blood pressure still goes up when I think about it.
I need a new family, this one is going to be the death of me. :wtf:

A 12 ton spin bottle jack by what I'm guessing is C.K. Iron Works Ashtabula Ohio.

Haven't found anything on company, so hoping someone here might know.

Mike

Had a pretty crappy week, so spent the end of it driving around, looking at too much ****. Anyway, this is most of what I picked up:
20180517_174711.jpg
Hit a restore that I don't get to all that often, and then an antique mall/**** shack finding good misc. sockets (Proto Metric, Plomb Wf universal set. misc. US sockets, shims, a Proto 5457 spring loaded breaker bar and a cool old ratchet (from Italy!)
20180520_111550.jpg
And on Sat hit an estate sale in the middle of nowhere that hadn't been picked over, finding a set of Elora DBE's, Long C Craftsman wrenches, Armstrong tool holders, Craftsman US made number punches, Hazet speciality wrench, Craftsman calipers, drafting curve set, crown top hand box, marking gauge and earlier I had picked up a long c white tape

Now have triplets, as picked up the third Prentiss 22.

First 2 owner pics from CL ad.

Last 2 pics once cleaned/finished.

Only one of my Prentiss 22 vises is marked, while other two have no markings.

Mike

I've got an identical Big Horn Line machinists box, but with round pulls. I'd be very curious to see if there's a number on the decal and/or the center hasp. My hasp is marked 412, and I've seen Big Horn decals with numbers like 428, 420, etc.

No clue, Mike, but that's got Lugzsonian (my house was built in 1897) artistic doorstop written all over it. Love it. :)
