After the flea market, which didn't score much today, I started hitting G sales. Hardly any had man stuff. Basically all baby clothes or women's household knick-knacks. I start home as its already at 100 by 1130 or so. Eating an awesome burrito form the new little place at the flea market. I see a Garage sale sign on a side street and pass on buy. Think about it for a few blocks and made a u-turn. Young guy running a sale in his parents' garage. He says you just made it I was about to shut it down I gotta go out of town. Everything needs to go and cheap! I first spied a drafting set like my dad has had since college. Then I notice he has a box of old tools on the back table marked $5.... then..$4... then a new paper sign taped to it 2/$1 ... its FULL of killer stuff. I start [picking through it he says $10 for the whole box if you want it. SOLD! I got out of there and headed on home. Best score in a while. I see Plomb, SnapOn, Craftsman, Bonney... Illl have to sort it all out in the garage in a bit. right now time to go swimming since its almost up to 1000 degrees. Gotta love Texas summers!

Still lots of good scores! You guys are knocking it!

I did a LOT better than I had any right to expect! I did miss one score by about a minute, on an old 242 Coleman single mantle lantern... guy scooped it up for $4... I just saw as he asked the price... :(

But the rest of the day went well!

I mentioned last nights CL Vices... two of them. An Athol No 15 with 4-1/2" jaws, quick release, but the support shelf had been busted off and brazed back on. its been in service like that for a long time so a user. I only bought it for the quick release feature.

The other was a really old Columbian No. !44, exposed screw but NOT a homeowner's, vise. This was industrial. pretty heavy only 4" not the biggest one this style we have seen but still beefy at 26 lbs (compared to a 10-14 lb Homeowners) the slide and screw are extra long for its class, and I may set his up on the welding bench

attachment.php

The bottom was setup for a square head bolt I believe, to be used as the center stud and cinch.

Today we started at the HS flea and I was amazed at how many tools were out there!

Three different stops at the flea, and it was two bucks for the Kline spinner #2 Phillips and the smaller T-Bevel marked SOHACO, and Southington Hardware Co. A buck for the hammer handle, and a buck each for the Proto Impacts (One is Armstrong) at stops 2 & 3.

attachment.php

Another Flea vendor and a fiver for the three clamps (two are aluminum. I'm really liking the aluminum clamps for general light use...), 3 SK sockets, and one extension and three sockets by Duro Chrome. (I'm seeing more and more Duro/Indestro tools out there), plus the no name dolly.

More to come from the Estate sale!

I almost forgot this 7X50 Monocular from the flea. VERY clear optics, and only $7! (talked down from $10)

attachment.php

The estate sale was good. I left far more than I took, but I was also cherry picking. TONS of stuff from an old car guy.

Hammers, Sheet metal, body, ball peen... including a handle which the Sheet metal hammer needs as someone took a third of its handle out with a torch...
the small BP is a Paschall, maybe 4 oz. Proto on the handled Body hammer, The loose Body hammer head is Fairmont, and the same style as the one I had taken from the box I made up at an auction last month. a Cam-lock wrench two SO flare sockets, a Cornwell wrench, a Mayhew #3 Phillips (I use this size a LOT on the Samurai), Small can of lighter fluid I'll refill and put on the inside work bench.

attachment.php

An Intereasting Can, probably about 3 gallon size? 1/3 ful of rusty nails that need recycled... Marked ProtectoSeal on top.

attachment.php

And has a "liquid Level" and a line impressed unde all the rust

attachment.php

this one is Kool! An AMG (American Gas Co. ) KampKook three burner stove!

attachment.php

attachment.php

It is marked Mod. No. 99 under all the paint, and has a 1921 (probably patent date), as well I'll strip the tag with SG of the red primer...

Little old lady headed to a retirement home, selling off her stuff with help from her daughters. Nice Craftsman tool chest and complete 1/2" socket set, ratchet, speeder and extension. Too bad I have a set-I hope it finds a good home. I did cave and bought three ratchets and two craftsman screwdrivers for $15. A 1/4" Durachrome 4587, a 3/8" Durachrome 4487 and a 3/8" Craftsman -V-, with broken switch.

Lathes are like ink jet printers... The cost isn't in the base machine, it's in the consumables and accessories...

Picked up all these 1950's era pocket calculators/guides/cards for a couple dollars today.

The blue Allen and red Starrett calculators are bonded in plastic with a printed center cardboard sliding card. Both made in Newark, NJ

Most all the other cards are also plastic with the exception of the tan colored Lufkin tools card which is a hard cardboard type. The three largest items on the right are paper booklets.

By the way, if any of you ever find yourself needing to buy ink cartridges at Office Depot, always check the officedepot.com online price. If the price on the website is lower than in-store, which in my experience (Canon ink) it often is, they will match it at the register if you ask.

Man, you guys are doing well this past week or so! Lots of great scores and saves! I may be back into "Slow" mode. Last W/E was pretty good; today I have one stop beyond a HS Flea... I did pick up a couple of vises last night off of CL. (Pics later)

WG - What is the height of that stand? Leaving the feet out of the equation, I'd say tool stand, possibly for a vise. The feet don't scream work shop at all...

If for a table it would need an adapter plate, and a table top. Maybe 2 more inches or so? :dunno: So most tables are 30" high, or 36 for counter height. Bars are higher I believe so depending on height a bar stool table would be higher. (Never measured a bar's height...)

Very cool base for something for sure!

the feet add 2" to height, table top adapter plate would be easy peasy for me, and i got some 2" thick cherry i'm wanting to get into. i'm thinking it may have been part of a outside set back in the day.... maybe with a large cast iron flower pot fastened to it. thanks 4 all comments so far.

Whew, hit about four estate sales and the restore today, getting good stuff at most of them. I will start with the last, restore
20180602_144601.jpg
20180602_144942.jpg
Some Proto Dyna ring impacts, riffler rasps, a nice draftsman's kit and some weird craft toolkit from the Restore. The draftsman's kit contained leads, calipers, a pointer, draftsman's pencil and other stuff. $5
Next stop was an ES way out there, not much but got a transitional plane for $5
20180602_150840.jpg
Next was a TOO estate sale that I had seen online but didn't think it would have anything, but I was driving pretty close so I stopped
20180602_145317.jpg
Plomb needle nose (the theme of the weekend) Plomb and MAC drivers, Starrett punch, Worth chisel and PEXTO narrow nose pliers. $8

The second estate sale I went to looked the best online, big shop tools and an old CJ3B(high hood) I wanted to look at, but everything was priced to the nines, so I passed. That leaves my first stop for the next post.

My first stop was in a small town on my way to what looks the best, but I figured why not.
Looked to be a professors house, a lot of books (picked up Bierce's Devils Dictionary and Kipling's poetry, both hardcover with dust jacket from the '30's) and spotted a toolbox amidst the junk in the basement.
20180602_142038.jpg
Marked $18 I popped it open took a look and lugged it upstairs to pay
20180602_143117.jpg
20180602_143135.jpg
Packed with American tools; Proto and P&C pipe wrenches, Blue Point, lots of Craftsman, Thorsen and Barcolo wrenches (combo, DOE and DBE), a complete Walden 1/4 socket set, 4, 6 and 8 inch Crescent adjustables. Proto needle nose, Red Devil linemen pliers. Among other things.

Here are all the needle nose pliers I found this weekend. Plomb, Proto, Utica, Klein, Boker, some Swedish...

not a garage sale per se, but my parents got these for me from a flea market.
I'm loving that Mrs. MacGregor's tin, Jeff. I passed up a PHILLIES cigar tin today. I could use something else vintage for my miscellaneous tiny wrenches (to replace a vintage Boy Scouts box they're in now...), but the guy wanted $10.

So after some Googling, This can is a bench top parts washer.
It was cool before; it's even cooler now.

So I stopped at an estate sale on my way home from work. The place was insane. Garage bays that led to more garage bays. Probably more than 12 bays filled with cabinets and tools. Lots of parts bins, tall lista cabinets, all full of tools. I only had about 30 min but I scooped out some money makers.

This 160lb American wrought anvil and craftsman belt sander on a craftsman stand is what I bought for $375.
IMG_8832.jpg
IMG_8830.jpg

I could have spent tens of thousands. I passed on a 5 ton arbor press and a 200 pound fisher anvil just to name a few things.

Wow! Was this with a normal-size house, or was the house huge too?

Funny thing is I thought it was just the Normal bench grinder stand when I paid for it. I didn’t find out it was the larger stand until I dig it out from all the **** that was on top of it. I think it was an old farm once. The house it self wasn’t huge I don’t think.

Saturday I hit several area subdivision sales. Picked up the Milwaukee probe thing at my first stop. Don't know if I need a probe thing, but it's like new and I bundleded it with a new travel backpack so the guy gave me a smokin good deal. The Snap-on right angle drill I picked up the other day at an estate sale. The four hand tools there were from some tiny beat-up toolbox at another sub sale. Im always amazed at the onesey-twosey snap-on finds at garage sales... wheres the rest?

Those snake cams / borescopes are pretty cool, especially if the quality of the Milwaukee one lives up to their reputation. (Most common issue with this type of tool in general is having too poor-quality of an image.) I think looking inside a small hole in a wall to see what's inside, or down a clogged pipe (if waterproof), are the most common uses. Probably some various automotive tight spaces too.

That's an amazing buy. Hell the Craftsman ratchet is worth twice that. Can't wait to see what's in the box.

CL little craftsman metal lathe for $50 with cabinet stand and some tooling!

I have been wanting one for quite a while and thought I would have to pay more.

Just enough time to get my little 6" Craftsman lathe into the garage today and take a quick look. I could not be more pleased.

I think that with a good clean and lube she will spring to life. Came with the 3 and 4 jaw chucks, some face plates, tool holders, chuck keys, extra gears. So far the top looks solid, everything is tight but moves freely, the ways have onlyl minimal dings. The motor is not original and may need to be replaced, or it may just be belt tension. Hopefully once it is sorted, it will have a good runout.

Either way it will be more than adequate as a hobby lathe.

Duddly, be sure to oil everything (there should be oilers where the shafts rotate) and on the main spindle shaft, the oilers may have some cotton pads in a larger cup. Take these out, de-grease them and re-oil/refill. Those are to hold and feed the oil gradually.

Yesterday at the local flea, I added to my library of Random House Landmark hardcovers...$3 for four.
Today Mrs LesserSon & I got up, walked the dogs, got gas. Local flea turned up a heavy Bonney ballpein, then down rt100 to Jakes flea where I coaxed out some more Bonney pieces. Then a Craftsman crown logo blowmold box without a single Craftsman inside...instead, some REALLY old stuff - Ayer, Mossberg, and unmarked extruded sockets; three SK, three Duro, and eight S/O overstrike sockets. Plus a Craftsman Button-pattern pliers...$20.50 all.
Then off to WWII weekend at the MidAtlanticAirMuseum in Reading. $32/adult entrance fee. Big birds, Jeeps, trucks, tanks, reenactors (including General Douglas MacArthur). Lots of tents including radio and maintenance. And a FLEA MARKET. Most of the merchandise was twice what you might find in a general flea market, but this was specialized. Mostly clothing, pouches, helmets, bayonets. I found one thing a I could not resist: an H&P 1 ‘18 pick-mattock sheath...I offered $10, but guy wouldn’t go lower than $15.

Pics soon to follow.

So I went back to yesterday's estate sale on "cleanup day" and did rather well! I did NOT find the KampKook Legs, or the drain tray for the benchtop cleaning tank however...

Twenty Bucks covered:

4 sleeves, 250 sheets of 3M sandpaper: (Isn't one sleeve about $20 these days?) :pimpflash Umm, NO! its over $50 for a sleeve of 50? :wtf:

Well, I'm stocked up for a while!

A belt tension tester, and a small trailer wheel balancer:

MC Mirror, Circular saw for a hand drill (needs one wingnut), Mustang gas cap, a bit worse for the wear, an old bottle socket, a fire Hose Adapter

I've been wanting one of these ever since I first saw an exhaust gas analyser when they first started testing for smog. Perfect for tuning a carb! This one is relatively compact and I think complete but for something for the tach.

The Business end of the sniffer -Does not look to have been used a lot!

Retracting hose reel, and I think the hose is fairly new and 1/2"!

Three 2 bbl carbs, the holly has a little use; the FoMoCo's look to be NOS.

Picked up this cast iron machine base and a vanderman vise this week for $70 total.

You **** on that vise. Can you post some more images. (maybe on the vise thread). It looks like a monster and that stand is really cool!!

Picked up this Klein tool rack for $10:

Old brass/brass WH fan. Runs on 110V DC. $50:

Mole Cat and cartridges $5. Does this thing really work or is it a gimmick?

LS is that someone's Bicycle/Mini Bike trying to look like an Army MC? very cool!

I guess so. There was such a melange of genuine, period-correct, & reproduction stuff everywhere, me being no expert judge of the differences, I just snapped pics and kept moving.

I like that saw! Are the heads on the screws domed, or are they flat & flush, with split nuts on the other side? If so, that might predate 1876. I agree that the deeper blade is meant to keep the kerf running true, and allowed many resharpenings. The narrow ship pattern blades allow for curving cuts. Later, most saw blade patterns were a sort of compromise.

I like that saw! Looks like a big rip saw close to the English pattern, like a Disston No7. But I wonder if it has been shortened. Seems like it should have a nib and a step-down nose above the toe.
