Lug: I hear you on the LOOK and thanks for the tour as I know it will certainly change as you find other cool stuff.

wish you were closer cause I don't have any room for this old Navy cabinet and could let it go to a good home.

Thanks, guys.

Toolmobiles wouldn't roll, Outlaw. The floor is unfinished - literally pebbled.

I'm not happy with the corner, but I'm not desperate. Yet. Something good will come along sooner or later.

Glad you enjoyed it, Jeff!

Drives, All:
I don't know if you've been following my hand truck thread, but I've been looking through some vintage hardware catalogs, to see if I can find the one I found and just to get smarter about them as a category of vintage equipment, in general.

Anyway, in the process, I ran into a cool-looking 4-wheel hand cart in a 1945 Navy catalog, billed as an Engine Cylinder and Piston cart. I'd probably end up putting something else where the pistons etc go, but I'm digging this as portable cabinet!

I don’t think that would fit in my NAF box! It is cool though. Probably Cliff or Roger will find one in the U.K.
It's Saddletramp (the guy doing the Air Corps museum) who really needs one!

Changing subjects...……………...

I picked up a little Dorman parts cabinet today at the flea market. The dimensions are 14" H x 11" D x 15" W. I am very impressed. It's well-built and sturdy. It weighs 58 pounds - empty! The drawers are reinforced with heavy gauge corrugated steel with a wide variety of compartments, full length, halves, quarters, sixteenths, and even smaller. It has provision for stacking or connecting other cabinets on either side.

when I worked at Carquest we had a Huge Dorman selection along an entire wall in our warehouse. They closed that store a while back, wonder if they sold the cabinets..

Nice find on the Dorman parts cabinet Lugz. I see those every once in a while and it is very impressive how stout they are and the graphics aren't bad either. I have some of their smaller cabinets that are much lighter. A local "antique" store had a few stacks of cabinets like yours for sale last time I passed through but the price they had on them was ridiculous. Ed.

Lug: you've been busy on this thread lately. have you got the old vintage metal cabinet bug like I do now? I think i know why you passed on those flat files and vidmars cause they are very heavy and probably would have been a PITA to get into your basement man cave especially if not a permanent solution.

i've seen the cheaper versions of those Dorman cabinets and still looking for the all old metal ones. nice find!!

that old piston cabinet is COOL and hope you find one some day. it might be hard to get into the man cave, but that is a keeper.

ALL: keep posting up your no name metal cabinets and toolboxes as you can cause i'm sure that there are thousands of them we haven't seen yet.

There is an old auto parts store not far from me. I love taking my boys there as it’s a time capsule of the 50s. As soon as I walk in the proprietor always opens the coke machine and tells my boys to “pick a soda water.” Anyway he gave me this Dorman bin- can’t imagine a better storage unit for fasteners and such. Also makes me think of that gentleman.

Lugz,
Nice cabinet, I can't believe that size cabinet is 58 pounds empty! Love the patina on it and the use of the corrugated metal dividers. That's a clever way to add almost infinite adjustability. Well done. I saw it over on the garage sale thread and wanted a closer look...

I wasn't looking forward to negotiating the Bilco doors and a flight of wooden steps, no. :) But my sense of style and time period was their undoing.

Thanks for posting, SAA44-40. Interesting to compare our cabinets. Looks like they stuck with the same basic design for a number of years. Similar markings, too, with the drawers being numbered for different parts. (By the way, I am jealous that yours has a wider variety of markings. All mine are [10] CUP EXPANSION PLUGS, except the bottom drawer, which is a [5] for HEX CAP SCREWS.) Apparently they dropped the wings at some point.

Thanks, Bears Fan.

Good afternoon All! My husband and I are building our barndominium from the ground up ourselves. This isn't our first rodeo; however, I want my kitchen to to stay true to our industrial theme. I am looking at steel cabinetry. Any suggestions?

Check out my website ShopStorageCabinets.com

We have a full line of industrial cabinets, bins and lockers from Durham Manufacturing, Durham, Connecticut.

We also carry NewAge Products garage cabinets. Fully welded modular all steel cabinets. I had a hotel chain purchase 72 tool cabinets for dressers in the kids themed rooms at Disney World.

Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Sometimes you're in time, and sometimes you're just a few minutes too late. Sometimes you run into a 300-foot coil of vintage genuine manila rope and it's 1" diameter (the specification for rope in WWII), and sometimes it's 3/4". Today was one of those lose, not spec, arrive a few minutes too late days!

That's not my Army cabinet with a butcher block top that you see in the back of not my vehicle in Pic 1. The guy who bought it walked up to the back of the big panel truck it was sitting in just a few second before me!!! :(

To make matters worse, I had already been at the flea for close to an hour, having started on the other side and worked my way around to the house close-out guys in the dirt along the side of the parking lot at the end! (Sometimes I start there, and sometimes I end there. You can't see it all at once, so it's a sometimes damned if you do, sometimes damned if you don't **** shoot, you guys know that... But if today was a day I had decided to start with the house close-out guys, that cabinet would be MINE!)

In an act of self-flagellation, I offered to help him load it, adding insult to injury.

Pic 2 is a shot of the data plates. ("Data what?" the guy said. Yeah, rubbing salt deeper and harder into the wound, the buyer didn't even know what any of that gobbledygook meant, nor did he care!)

Reads: CABINET, SP/PTS, TYPE 1, CLASS A / FSN: 7125-693-4352 / CONTR. NO. DSA-4-D86073-TR529, and DEHLER MFG CO. INC. / U.S.

It's not really in my wheelhouse. The FSN dates it to after 1953. The "DSA" (Defense Supply Agency) in the contract number dates it to 1961 to 1977. And the "73" in the contract number is very likely the year it was let. It's missing a drawer. And you can see that the lip (for clamping vises, grinders, etc on the top) has been snapped off flush. But that's just me trying to talk myself out of my disappointment. It was a nice cabinet! Dammit!

Lug: look at it this way. it's missing a drawer for one and you didn't own it and almost give one away like I did a couple years ago cause a friend asked me for mine. hence I don't own one now either, but could use several cause they would make great big vise or grinder stands too.

just an FYI. I bet I had almost 2000 pounds of steel in mine before I sold it and i've still got buckets of the bolts and steel I had stored in it laying around. it's a beast so don't pass on the next one if you have enough cash in your wallet to buy it.

ALL: so I sold a couple of my old 3 door Navy lockers and i've held on to one and was thinking of selling it too until i found this one and found a spot to put both of them and fill them up. now i've got six doors of old NAVY goodness to fill up.

hope you all are having a great weekend and if you have any vintage metal cabinets small or large and want to post up a few pictures with some history if you have any please do.

cheers

Fowl & CM: i have to agree if you can find one that isn't rusted out from sitting outside these are built pretty stout. not sure exactly what i'm going to store in them, but i've got a spot for them in the storage unit that i'm planning on keeping for awhile.

cheers

ALL: anybody own some of these old Boeing or Government filing cabinets and want to show me what you store in them? i just finished cutting 1/4 inch hardboard cause each of the 60 bins (20 removable bins per cabinet) has a 1.5-2 inch hole in the bottom of each bin.

post up pictures of your metal cabinets and what you store in them so we can all maybe GET ORGANIZED!!

Here is a Delco Pleasurizers shock absorber cabinet I picked up yesterday that is probably late 60's to early 70's. I spent about a half hour wiping it down with some degreaser and except for a little rust on top it cleaned right up. Really nice and interesting graphics and pretty sound all around. It has the Pleasurizer lift air shocks on one side and the regular Pleasurizers shock on the other. A pretty neat and fairly heavy duty vintage cabinet. I also got a United Delco top cabinet that I may mount on top of this base but it was a little rusty and is soaking in some evaporust overnight. Ed.

Wow, nice cabinet, looks stout like you mentioned, is there just a shelf behind the door?

I wonder why Delco doesn't use that name anymore.....

I wonder that too fowldarr...:) seems both fitting and descriptive of something that delivers a fine ride.

Thanks Jay, it has a locking drawer on top and then the multi shelf storage area below. Probably made strong enough to be filled with pleasurizers so it is built quite well and at 42" high will hold quite a payload. Ed.

Hi Drives, When I built part of the shop about 30 years ago I used whatever I could get for cabinets including an old refrigerator. It's still there in the middle of the picture below and it's high time it got replaced with an even older cabinet. There are a couple file cabinets that could go too if I find something better. they all lasted this long because they hold a lot so whatever I find to replace them will have to be plenty strong. Ed.

ORC: very creative storage solutions that is for certain. does that radio work or is it a radio?

great looking stuff and thanks for sharing. BTW if you might need a few stout 4 drawer and 2 drawer filing cabinets to hold you over until you find your vintage replacements just ask.

cheers

Thanks Drives. The box on the wall with the jeep face holds a boom box. I've kept it in there where it stayed cleaner. It needs to move over a little to if I keep it. One of my sons asked about it the other day as he remembers helping me make it. Time to make a few changes in this space and go a little more vintage. Ed.

Maybe that size hole is too big to slap on a fridge magnet?

They work well on finger poke through holes I encounter on the underside of paper filing drawers.

YMMV

Well this is a name brand, and it's sweet and priced right.
Unfortunately, I missed it and am "next in LINE"
D0RMAN 4 Drawer.
It was only $40.00.
I am A little low on $$. 00 at the time
So I requested to consider a $30.00 0ffer.
He texted back, (And edited the CL Posting)
That he has A "pending pick up"
(@ $40.00 too)
I would be next I line
Ok enough of my rambling..lol
Nice Motorcraft tall cabinet in there for $60.00 too.
Wouldn't mind having it myself if I had more space and more so money..... L0L
Will edit in a minute with links and pictures.
TY for reading.
